Vision The Sufi Kathak Foundation is a non-profit registered society founded by Manjari Chaturvedi to create awareness for Sufi Kathak and other related ancient performing art traditions. The Foundation works towards promoting traditional art forms and at the same time providing scholarships to students pursuing classical music and dance, and also pension and medical insurance to needy artists. Mission The aim of Sufi Kathak Foundation is to promote spiritual dance and music and world cultural unity, also initiating children and orienting the youth to become self-employed through arts - dance and music, and evolve a humanist outlook. The main objective of the foundation is to create centers for spiritual dance and music, folk & classical dance and organise training classes, workshops and musical concerts to promote Sufi Kathak and classical music in India as well as across the world. The society's mission is also to provide financial and technical assistance to retired artist as well as to needy students who are committed towards Sufi music and dance. Page2

Page3 From the President s desk The year 2010-11 has seen Sufi Kathak Foundation focusing strongly on issues of archiving and preservation as essential areas of work for keeping safe overall the Sufi music and dance traditions. Given the positioning of the organization as a leading capacity building institution for preserving intangible heritage of music Sufi music and dance in such a short time, Sufi Kathak Foundation should set the standards for other NGOs to learn from. Friends, I consider this to be one crucial area of work and soon we will be focusing more and more on such work which have strong preservation skills along with Manjari Chaturvedi, President, Sufi Kathak Foundation relevant and new age technology. Sufi Kathak Foundation will also partner and plan to work with other NGOs in program partnership mode to address issues relating to preservation techniques. Credibility and the impact it makes on any programme or movement, to bring about change and transformation, is time consuming and has taken the Foundation three years to formulate programmes and create a database of Friends of Sufi Kathak and I welcome all friends and voluntary participants. It is true that in MUSIC & DANCE, ART & CULTURE are processes to achieve a positive impact in the society. For three years, Sufi Kathak Foundation has endeavoured to make such an impact. Working with over 143 musicians and artists from the vulnerable and weaker sections of society, in the sector of culture, made a difference for these musicians who would have otherwise left their arts for

some low paying clerk office jobs is the qualitative change in their life and we strive to continue the same work. During the year, the organization planned programmes for strengthening the musicians by providing them medical support and to serve the musician s communities more effectively. Similarly, we celebrate, the two annual fund raiser programmes of Sufi Kathak Foundation which help us generate some funds for the work we aspire to do. Sufi Kathak Foundation has been supported by a variety of organisations. We appreciate and highly value the constant support demonstrated by Powergrid, ONGC, Karamchand Realtech for sponsoring the concerts held in the year. It is largely because of such support that as an organization we have been able to build the agenda of audience support which has made Sufi Kathak Foundation relevant name in the field of Sufi music and dance. This year besides our usual financial support programmes for musicians and income generating opportunities through concerts, we have initiated The 22 Khwajas Project and Qawwali Heritage Museum to preserve and at the same time promote the dying art of Qawwali and Sufi Music. The details of the project are contained in the following pages. These and many other proven track records of Sufi Kathak Foundation, not only establishes its credibility but also has sown the seeds of change and impact. Sufi Kathak Foundation is extremely happy for this performance and hopes to continue in the same spirit for years to come, bringing solace and prosperity to artists and preserve the art & culture and its traditions. Wish you all the Members, Readers, Partners, staff, a very happy and prosperous future. God Bless! Page4

Page5 One woman, with her consistent efforts has been single-handedly trying to revive the dying tradition of Sufi Music. Over the years the Sufis have been challenged in their approaches that aim at bringing the Lord Almighty close to his followers. Sufi Kathak Foundation faces this challenge together with the Sufis helping them bring their thought closer to the masses and bridging this gap between the Sufis and the rest of the world. Through her initiatives over the past 14 years, Manjari Chaturvedi has created a unique platform of unified world where by the two extreme, often conflicting Islamic world and Hinduism have been brought together on a single platform, which truly represents the essence of India. Through the Sufi Kathak Foundation I am committed to spread this message of communal harmony through music and dance to preserve art & culture of Qawwali for future generations. - Manjari Chaturvedi, founder and president of Sufi Kathak Foundation

Page6 Preserving the Art: Dialogues from the mystics The 22 Khwaja Project Delhi, a city of innumerable histories has not gone under focused. Howvever, despite all the attention, some of the once popular Sufi Shrines, are now lost somewhere in the pages of these history books. Among these lie the known yet unknown 22 Khwajas of Delhi, which stand representative of Sufism in Delhi through the different periods of Delhi s history. As a part of the Foundation s initiative, one concert will be performed each year, dedicated to the Masters of one these Sufi Shrines and will enlighten the people about the lost heritage and the significance of this Dargah, through poetry, music and dance. The year 2010 witnessed the 22 Khwaja Project focusing on the tomb of Khwaja Roushan Chirag-e-Dehli, the Sufi Saint of the popular Dargah or Tomb located in one of the prime localities of Delhi, Chirag Delhi. The production was successful in enlightening most Delhi residents, who recognized the significance of the place only by a recently built flyover rather than an age-old Dargah of the Khawaja. It is important to acknowledge our sponsors for our concert, without the support of which this concert would not be possible. The names of our sponsors are given in the end.

Page7 Spread over a span of 22 years, the coming years will see many such productions being showcased, focusing on the other Dargahs located in Delhi. Some comments from our spectators are mentioned below. Radha-Raas As a part of our fund raising initiatives and keeping with our theme of promoting communal harmony and create a unique platform for the unison of the two major conflicting religious forms in India, Radha-Raas, was a one of kind production staged by Sufi Kathak Foundation. This concept is one that defines how a secular cultural spirit emerges when Hindu and Muslim identities merge into one another and transcend into love beyond the confines of religion, which is very relevant in today s time and is an idea that we think would find resonance with your vision and belief. MY EFFORT IN THIS CONCERT IS TO COMMUNICATE THIS UNIQUE SECULAR INITIATIVE, DIVINE LOVE OF KRISHNA AS IMAGINED BY MUSLIM POETS - Manjari Chaturvedi, founder and president of Sufi Kathak Foundation It was a unique secular initiative that rightfully captured the rich cultural heritage of India and was directed towards religious unity, by presenting innovative initiatives that communicate, propagate and support art.

The Qawwali Heritage Museum As a part of its conservation and promotion of art activities, Sufi Kathak Foundation informally maintains a collection of books, audio recordings, video recordings, instruments, compositions etc. These items and collections are expected to expand in the future years. At present, this informal archive is catalogued and is available to those who are interested in knowing about the Sufi tradition of Qawwali, Sufism and other related subjects. We have been visited by scholars from other countries, which have shown interest in the Foundation s activities and used the resources available in the informal archive of the Foundation Page8

Page12 Some Responses from the audiences and media in 2010-11 Dear Manjari, I could not write to you earlier as we fell sick after 18.9 performance of yours. Now with your Vogue sms I am prompted to write. This performance of yours was the best till now. But that would be an obvious statement as you have been constantly improving. But this performance was well nigh PERFECT and it was hypnotising, exhilarating exciting and satisfying. I will have to consult a dictionary to come up with more adjectives for this performance. The very first piece was poetry in B&W. Anyone interested in backlit photography would burst into rapturous pleasure watching it. All the subsequent numbers were also great. The Iranian poem was new and lyrical. The dance of lights was fulfilling its musical role in your absence from the stage. The Jodhpur wala singers were very good last year. They were even better this year. The Awadhi singers were very good like every time but they seemed a bit out of synch with each other this time. I am awaiting the next year's performance and wondering how you are going to improve the already 'perfect' one. God bless you, Archana & Vinay Aditya Dear Manjari, It was a joy to be at your recital yesterday. Each item was subtly different to the other, from the almost manly Zikr, to the seated Kathak of Amir Khusro, the energy of Buleh Shah & the Mast Kalandar, which transported you to a very private space! Thank you for sharing your understanding and feeling for Sufi music & poetry with us. The music too was phenomenal very interesting to watch the mutual respect of the groups for each others music. The combination of daph and flute was magical.it was just a year after your performance for the Indian Cancer Society, (11 Sep 2009), and I felt I was making up my loss at that performance. God bless you with many years of wonderful dance. Suren & Jyotsna Govil Thank you very much for this email and the invitation card that you have couriered. I and my friend have become a huge fan of Sufi Kathak after seeing her last performance. We would like to send a humble contribution for the good work. Please advice if a cheque would work. And if so, in what name and mailing address to courier it to. Much regards, Rj Ramesh Jain Senior Program Manager US Embassy, American Center

Page13 Dear Manjariji, it was a pleasure and privilege to have met you the other night..your entire persona reminded me of an 'APSARA' from our scriptures! So gentle, so beautiful, so pure and spreading light around...when I hugged you i felt blessed! Definitely you have an amazingly divine aura around you...but i m sure u ve been told that a million times before. Please include me in your mailing list as I would love to watch you perform seeped in devotional love as much as possible. Fan and follower, Kavita PS> Hope your emails inform of your workshops too.
