GODS WRATH WILL BE SATISFIED 16:35-37 Therefore, O harlot, hear the word of the LORD. Thus says the Lord GOD, Because your lewdness was poured out and your nakedness uncovered through your harlotries with your lovers and with all your detestable idols, and because of the blood of your sons which you gave to idols therefore, behold, I will gather all your lovers with whom you took pleasure, even all those whom you loved and all those whom you hated. So I will gather them against you from every direction and expose your nakedness to them that they may see all your nakedness. 16:38-40 Thus I will judge you like women who commit adultery or shed blood are judged; and I will bring on you the blood of wrath and jealousy. I will also give you into the hands of your lovers, and they will tear down your shrines, demolish your high places, strip you of your clothing, take away your jewels, and will leave you naked and bare. They will incite a crowd against you and they will stone you and cut you to pieces with their swords. Page 1

16:41-42 They will burn your houses with fire and execute judgments on you in the sight of many women. Then I will stop you from playing the harlot, and you will also no longer pay your lovers. So I will calm My fury against you and My jealousy will depart from you, and I will be pacified and angry no more. In the sight of many women with Jerusalem being viewed as a woman; the wife of God, the many woman are her sister cities which represent the Gentile nations. The Jewish people have long been the object of scorn by many nations and today anti-semitism is on the rise. In Luke 21 Jesus tells of the things which would happen prior to His second coming; But when you see Jerusalem surrounded by armies, then recognize that her desolation is near. Then those who are in Judea must flee to the mountains, and those who are in the midst of the city must leave, and those who are in the country must not enter the city; because these are days of vengeance, so that all things which are written will be fulfilled. Woe to those who are pregnant and to those who are nursing babies in those days; for there will be great distress upon the land and wrath to this people; and they will fall by the edge of the sword, and will be led captive into all the nations; and Jerusalem will be trampled under foot by the Gentiles until the times of the Gentiles are fulfilled. Luke 21:20-24 (NASB) Israel will be under the scorn of the world until Jesus returns. The evidence for this is becoming increasingly more vivid as the Lord said. Since the time of Jacobs trouble is yet to come, it must be recognized that the totality of His fury against Israel will come to an end with the return of Jesus. 16:43-45 Because you have not remembered the days of your youth but have enraged Me by all these things, behold, I in turn will bring your conduct down on your own head, declares the Lord GOD, so that you will not commit this lewdness on top of all your other abominations. Behold, everyone who quotes proverbs will quote this proverb concerning you, saying, Like mother, like daughter. You are the daughter of your mother, who loathed her husband and children. You are also the sister of your sisters, who loathed their husbands and children. Your mother was a Hittite and your father an Amorite. Israel had taken the name of the Lord in vain! Her conduct did not match her oath. She will face God s wrath not because He is brutish in nature, but because of her own gross sin and betrayal. Notice how the Lord seems to isolate her spiritual idolatry from all her abominations. It is idolatry that the Lord hates more than anything. The same is similar in our marriage covenant. We can see forgiving a multitude of offenses yet betrayal of the marriage oath is a much more hurtful act. Just like the Canaanites had originally had the influence of Noah and the understanding of their creator handed down to them and yet loathed Him through idolatry, so the daughter city, Jerusalem has come to bare the same fruit; like mother, like daughter. This is what Paul talks about in Romans 1. The Phoenicians practiced child sacrifice in worshipping Saturn. To complete the family comparison of like breeding like, the sister cities of Sodom and Samaria are noted. Page 2

16:46-47 Now your older sister is Samaria, who lives north of you with her daughters; and your younger sister, who lives south of you, is Sodom with her daughters. Yet you have not merely walked in their ways or done according to their abominations; but, as if that were too little, you acted more corruptly in all your conduct than they. Whatever the reason for mentioning the age relative to Jerusalem, the sister cities and their subordinate cities are all filled with abomination, yet Israel had special revelation from the Lord and had a special covenant with Him. The false gods inspired by demons never did anything for the Gentile nations who worshipped them. The Lord God had tabernacled with Israel and brought them by His strong hand to the place of their prominence. The Gentile sisters had not betrayed their false gods. 16:48-50 As I live, declares the Lord GOD, Sodom, your sister and her daughters have not done as you and your daughters have done. Behold, this was the guilt of your sister Sodom: she and her daughters had arrogance, abundant food and careless ease, but she did not help the poor and needy. Thus they were haughty and committed abominations before Me. Therefore I removed them when I saw it. The heart of the sin of Sodom is plainly described as being pride. While we often think of the homosexuality associated with Sodom it was merely a sign that they were already under the judgement of God as the whole society condoned it. It s wild passions came from the same pride. They also were idle because of the ease of abundant food. This society lived in a fertile region and enjoyed great bounty from the fertile soil. Abundance can often produce a smug idleness leaving no room for humility. Those who become identified by their possessions often will do anything to satisfy an ever growing appetite for quenching lust. This leads to ignoring the needs of the poor and even violating others for selfish pleasure. Judgement came without Sodom even thinking it a possibility. Still the Lord says that the sin of Israel is greater. This is because her betrayal was against the knowledge of God that she had been given. As the wife of God Israel had an intimate covenant relationship with Him; enlightened by truth. Do we take for granted our blessings; our lives? 16:51-52 Furthermore, Samaria did not commit half of your sins, for you have multiplied your abominations more than they. Thus you have made your sisters appear righteous by all your abominations which you have committed. Also bear your disgrace in that you have made judgment favorable for your sisters. Because of your sins in which you acted more abominably than they, they are more in the right than you. Yes, be also ashamed and bear your disgrace, in that you made your sisters appear righteous. The Jews had despised the Gentiles as dogs. They further despised the Samarians as they were part Gentile and part Jew. Both groups were viewed as filthy and not favored by God, yet the totality of their sin makes these despised people look righteous. Man s perspective of himself is always jaded by sin and pride. The Lord sees sinners in need of repentance and forgiveness. In need of grace and mercy. If we say we have no sin, we make God a liar and are deceived. This often leads to sin that can be easily noticed by others yet not Page 3

ourselves. 16:53-55 Nevertheless, I will restore their captivity, the captivity of Sodom and her daughters, the captivity of Samaria and her daughters, and along with them your own captivity, in order that you may bear your humiliation and feel ashamed for all that you have done when you become a consolation to them. Your sisters, Sodom with her daughters and Samaria with her daughters, will return to their former state, and you with your daughters will also return to your former state. The ultimate sin of Israel was and still is the national disbelief and rejection of Jesus as the Christ. They didn t know Jesus because they didn t know The Father. If Sodom and Samaria are Gentiles and half-breeds whom the Jews viewed as unrighteous, then we can see how Israel s sin has become a consolation to them. Paul says to Gentile believers in Romans 11 For just as you once were disobedient to God, but now have been shown mercy because of their disobedience, so these also now have been disobedient, that because of the mercy shown to you they also may now be shown mercy. For God has shut up all in disobedience so that He may show mercy to all (vv30-32). This speaks of salvation by grace as a pure gift from God, not merited by any man other than Jesus who purchased redemption for His own people. Additionally this is a prophetic picture of the future under the reign of Jesus. The Lord will bring restoration to Israel and the nations only after Israel has been brought to utter humiliation and repentance. 16:56-59 As the name of your sister Sodom was not heard from your lips in your day of pride, before your wickedness was uncovered, so now you have become the reproach of the daughters of Edom and of all who are around her, of the daughters of the Philistines those surrounding you who despise you. You have borne the penalty of your lewdness and abominations, the LORD declares. For thus says the Lord GOD, I will also do with you as you have done, you who have despised the oath by breaking the covenant. This reproach is just as true today as it was in Ezekiel s time. Today the Edomites are the Muslim nations who vow to remove Israel from the map and the Jews from existence. Israel gropes for world acceptance yet finds herself despised by her neighbors and most of the world. The world doesn t recognize Israel as God s covenant nation. Just as they had broken that same covenant, so it would seem as though God has left that same covenant. But praise be to God that the covenant of promise to the Fathers is ratified through the New Covenant and not the Law Covenant. GODS WILL REMEMBER HIS COVENANT 16:60-63 Nevertheless, I will remember My covenant with you in the days of your youth, and I will establish an everlasting covenant with you. Then you will remember your ways and be ashamed when you receive your sisters, both your older and your younger; and I will give them to you as daughters, but not because of your covenant. Thus I will establish My covenant with you, and you shall know that I am the LORD, so that you may remember and be ashamed and never open your mouth anymore because of your humiliation, when I have forgiven you for all that you have done, the Lord GOD declares. Page 4

As the New Covenant now comes into full view we see what God remembers compared to what Israel had forgotten; His covenant vs. her covenant. This is grace vs. law. Israel will be restored because of the grace of God. The A.R. Fausset commentary on this portion of scripture reads: God's promise was one of promise and of grace. The law, in its letter, was Israel's (thy) covenant, and in this restricted view was long subsequent ( Gal 3:17 ). Israel interpreted it as a covenant of works, which she while boasting of, failed to fulfil, and so fell under its condemnation ( 2Cr 3:3, 6 ). The law, in its spirit, contains the germ of the Gospel; the New Testament is the full development of the Old, the husk of the outer form being laid aside when the inner spirit was fulfilled in Messiah. God's covenant with Israel, in the person of Abraham, was the reason why, notwithstanding all her guilt, mercy was, and is, in store for her. Therefore the heathen or Gentile nations must come to her for blessings, not she to them. The temporary forms of the law such as washings and ceremony; clean and unclean, had to give way to the everlasting covenant promised by God (2 Sam 23:5 Isa 55:3; Jer31:31-37; 32:40; 50:4,5; Eze 37:26; Heb 8:8-13) and ratified in Jesus s blood. Just as we love God because He first loved us so Israel will be made to remember only because God has never forgotten. For Israel to be ashamed bears the fruit of repentance (2Cor 7:10,11). This parable has portrayed Jerusalem's heritage. She came from pagan origins and has acted like them; even worse. But as part of the New Covenant the Lord promises to her all of her relatives (the nations) as daughters. On an individual basis, the gospel started with Jews in Jerusalem and then spread to the Gentiles. In like manor, Jerusalem (at the beginning of the Millennium) will be the first nation to be converted to Christ; and to her the other nations shall attach themselves as believers in Messiah, Jerusalem's King ( Psa 110:2 Isa 2:2, 3 ). "The king's daughter" in Psa 45:12-14 is Judah; her "companions," as "the daughter of Tyre," are the nations given to her as converts, here called "daughters." This stands in complete contrast to the great harlot, Babylon who is the mother of all harlots who mocks Israel for being a widow, divorced by God (Isa 47:1-9; Rev 18:7), yet she will be devoured by the beast while Israel will be remembered by Her husband, the God of Israel who keeps His covenants. Notice that it will be the grace of God that will cause Israel to repent. No matter how severe, punishment cannot produce repentance. True humility can only come about as God opens sinners eyes to their true condition; genuine sorrow over sin. As Paul said Wretched man that I am! Who will set me free from the body of this death? (Rom 7:24). Page 5
