Page 4 MAMBALAM TIMES November 15-21, 2014 TAMIL CINEMA 75 - A LOOK BACK By RANDOR GUY G. RAMANATHAN - 18 Another film of G. Ramanathanwhich attracted attentionwas a social comedy Kathanayaki. It was one of the Indian movie geniusesk. Ramnoth s films made for the Salem-basedmovie mogul T.R. Sundaram of Modern Theatres. The romantic comedy had Padmini and M.N. Rajam as the female leads with T. R. Ramachandran, the famed comedian star and character actor,as Padmini s heart-throb. The story had a drama company as the background for its theme. Padmini leaves home and joins the troupe and the owner (TRR) falls for her. She faces many problems and how the couple solve the problems formed the rest of the story while Rajam, as her friend, also contributes to the interest. This film had an impressive cast with ace comedian Thangavelu, then making his way to the top. The rising comediansa. Karunanidhi, S. Rama Rao and others were well supported by K.K. Soundar, M.R. Santhanam, T.K. Ramachandran and V.P.S.Mani as other Modern Theatres stock actors. Screenplay and dialogues were by T. K. Govindan who was fairly active and prominent during those years but today he is not remembered except by old timers. Lyrics were by Thanjai Ramaiah Das, Suradha and Kannadasan who got his first break for writing songs thanks to Ramnoth in Kanniyin Kaathali. Music was by the melody maker G. Ramanathan and songs were rendered P. Leela, A.M. Raja, Swarnalatha, Rani, S.C. Krishnan, D.B. Ramachandran and V.T. Rajagopal. Thanks to the drama troupe background-story, there were quite a few drama scenesand dances. One song Namma idly sambaaar became popular. A duet Karpanai ulaginiley filmed on Padmini and Ramachandran was a hit(voices A.M. Raja and P. Leela). The song about Idly sambaaar was by S.C.Krishnan who was known for his comedy songs. Dances were composed by A. K. Chopra and Gopalakrishnan. The film was only an average success but the songs became popular. Another film which attracted much attention and box office successwas Kaveri (1955) for which music was contributed by both G. Ramanathanand Viswanathan-Ramamurthi. This film has an interesting back story, as they say, which is not known to many, and is worthnarrating at some length. SP. Letchumanan Chettiar, popularly known in old Madras film and social circles as Lena Chettiar or simply as Lena, contributed much to the growth of Tamil Cinema in the early days as a talent scout and producer. He began his life as a businessperson in his native Chettinad dealing in used cars of the expensive variety and asa drama contractor. He created history when he printed handbills in Tamil about used cars for many of his rich clients in Chettinad who could not read English. This novelty attracted much attention. In those days, drama contractors used to stage what was known as special dramas. There were plays organised in villages and small towns featuring popular stage actors such as M. K. Thyagaraja Bhagavathar. Actors who were not associated with any Boys Company were engaged by these contractors for a fee. Lena was one such contractor who went on to become successful. (Of course, many black sheep in the trade ran away with the sale proceeds). MKT acted in Lena s popular play Pavalakodi along with star actress S. D. Subbulakshmi. The play was a hit not only in the Tamil-speaking districts of South India but also in Sri Lanka, Malaysia and other places in the Far East. When Bhagavathar had made enough money to launch his first film, Lena, a persuasive man, managed to bring him on board his company and offered to produce the film himself. He convinced MKT of the dangers of turning producer when he knew little about the industry. Pavalakodi (1934), directed by the sadly neglected Indian film pioneerk. Subramanyam turned out to be a big hit. With this Lena settled down in Madras and started his own company Krishna Pictures. His office was located on Thanikachalam Street in T. Nagarand was a well-known landmark in the city then. When Bhagavathar returned from prison after being incarcerated for nearly 30 months in the sensational Lakshmikantham Murder Case, he attempted to stage a comebackwhich did not prove successful. Lena wanted to relaunch MKT under his banner with a story called Bhairavi about a musician who had fallen on hard times. The story goes that the musician, an expert in the raga Bhairavi, pledges the raga to a rich man for a sum of money under the condition that he would not sing the raga until he repaid the money! The story was written by the noted Tamil filmmaker A.S.A. Sami based on a real musician, an expert in the raga Shankarabharanam. However, Lena had second thoughts after the failure of Bhagavathar in other films like Raja Mukthi. Therefore, he dropped the project and launched a new production Kaveri written by Sami and directed by the noted Telugu and Tamil film director of the day D. Yoganand, who had trained under maestro L.V. Prasad. Sivaji Ganesan was by then an iconic figure of Tamil Cinema and he played the hero with Padmini and Lalitha as the two women in love with him, one being a dancer and the other a princess. (To be continued) Madar Sangam invites children to showcase their talents Jothi Madar Sangam (8/3, Jothi Flats, Rameswaram Road) is entering its 37 th year on Saturday, Nov. 15. Jayaraman Even as family relationships are coming under strain for various reasons, we unknowingly shower love and affection on someone or something totally unknown or hitherto unconnected to us. Such love or affection, however, shakes us up violently as and when they happen. Such is a story of three kittens which were born in our residential compound about five months back. They used to play together and grew up drinking their mother s milk. Since we stay in the ground floor, these kittens used to frequent our backyard. We used to offer Exhibition-cum-sale of home made instant food products Girija Natarajan (resident of S-26-B, Ponambalam Salai, K. K. Nagar) will conduct an exhibition-cum-sale of her homemade instant food products on Monday, Nov. 17, from 10 a.m to 1 p.m at her residence. More than 25 food products including milagu kuzhambu, karuvepalai kuzhambu, pulikachal, herbal kuzhambu, instant masala base, instant masala gravy, dhal powder and coconut powder will be on display. She also undertakes bulk orders. The moment they heard the sound of our back door opening, they would come running and wait eagerly for us to satiate their palate. This was going on for sometime. Suddenly, one day, two of the kittens and the mother cat went missing. The third kitten continued to remain in our complex and built a special bond with my wife and used to follow her whenever she made her presence felt at the backyard for carrying out some household chore. One morning, as usual, it had its morning fill of milk and went classes on making instant food products. off. Later in the day when my wife went to the back yard a number of times, it never appeared or could be spotted. It did not come in the evening either to drink milk. When the same thing happened the next morning, we got worried and went looking for it around our apartment. Not finding it in its usual places, we got depressed thinking it had probably found a new home or probably lost its way after going out. My wife was quite upset as she had developed a deep bond with it. We were shattered when we later came to know through a neighbour that the kitten was no more. It had got run over accidentally when her son took out his car from the parking lot without realizing it was resting under it. We wept that night and it took us a long time to get over the grief as its memories kept haunting us. We wondered why this tragic end to the kitten? Had we not known about its death, we would have at least had the consolation of believing it was living well elsewhere. As a mark of respect to the untold friendship and bondage with the kitten, we have kept safe the plate in which we used to serve it milk. UGC urge colleges to abide by norms The University Grants Commission (UGC) issued circulars to colleges urging them to abide by its norms for awarding degrees. It pointed out that colleges advertised in vernacular newspapers about degrees with nomenclature that the commission had not notified in the gazette. The circular pointed out those candidates with such degrees faced litigation at a later stage and were denied certificates even after they cleared the National Eligibility Test (NET). Free Narayaneeyam classes for women and students Bhama Krishnan will conduct free Narayaneeyam classes for women and students this month in Ashok Nagar and Mambalam. The classes will be held from 6.30 a.m to 2 p.m followed by one hour of upanyasam. Narayaneeyam Sapthaham will be held in two batches, from 10 a.m to 1 p.m and from 4 p.m to 7 p.m The 1036 Narayaneeyam Sanskrit slokas with their Tamil meanings will be taught. For details of suitable dates and venue, please contact Bhama Krishnan in 97909 44800. In July this year, the UGC issued a notification with details of the nomenclature of degrees that could be awarded. The state-run colleges awarded fancy degrees. For instance, few colleges affiliated to Bharathiar University offer a three-year B. Com program under the following nomenclatures: e-commerce, computer application, professional accounting, accounting and finance, retail marketing, business process and services, financial system and foreign trade. Over 2,000 students pursue these programs in the college. The university withdrew its four-year B. Com degree after the UGC disbanded the program following a protest by Delhi University students some months ago. Students faced problems when BA English Literature was offered as BA Language and Literature. This is a subversion of the UGC rules, and we have alerted the colleges time and again, said C. Pichaandy, vice-president of the Association of University Teachers. CMYK

Nagar) has been converted into an open urinal by hundreds of passersby, nearby vendors and visitors to Panagal Park. The residents of the street face a huge health hazard due to the unhygienic condition of the road. Because of the stink which persists 24x7, even Corporation garbage collectors do not visit it often to clear garbage, which adds to the sanitation issues. Building a public urinal or keeping mobile toilets near Panagal Park could diffuse the problem and dissuade members of public from such uncivil acts. To deter the public from misusing the road and maintain sanitation, I request the authorities to build a fenced roadside garden. I also appeal to the EB officials to build a fence around the transformer at the end of the street to prevent public from urinating at the spot. S. Ganesan, Pinjala Subramaniam Street, T. Nagar Petty thefts on Moorthy Street on the rise Sir, In recent days, there has been a number of petty thefts like stealing of clothes, vessels, bicycles and others such small items in the residences on Moorthy Street, (West Mambalam). I appeal to the police officials to increase patrolling on Moorthy Street to discourage the thieves. C. Subramaniam, Moorthy Street, West Mambalam MAMBALAM TIMES Editor K. S. Ramakrishnan Asst. Advt. Advertise in the Classified Column of Mambalam Times! NO HOLDS BARRED By M. A. SADANAND V. R. Krishna Iyer, Jewel of India The Peacock Throne and the Kohinoor diamond had been vandalized by Nadhir Shah and the British respectively while looting the wealth of India, but these robbers could not impoverish the then richest country in the world since the mental worth of India remained uninfluenced by temporal things like power or pelf. It was in this background that great thinkers like Chandra Gupta, Buddha, Ashoka, Swamy Vivekanandaand super intellectuals like Rabindranath Tagore and Mahatma Gandhi sprouted in the holy land of India to make it holier through their innate mental attributes attuned to the love of their brethren linking minds to each other cementing a solid relationship that ensures peace in their lives and in the community. India woke up to its domestic brand of freedom to govern itself in 1947 by which time a 37-year old jurist by name V.R.Krishna Iyer, through sheer original brilliance and innate equipment for ferreting truth from fiction in aid of justice pure and simple had made the oldies of the Bar take notice of the young lawyer. It was also endorsed by the awestruck judiciary who had not come across such learning and the equipment in so young a lawyer. Judges at the district level courts would await his arrival to suit his convenience all over Malabar to which his car used to speed for daily hearing. The waiting judges must have felt that the day was a special one when he could appear and regale them with his take on the matter in hand which they knew would be wholly true and acceptable. A true lawyer would be a true judge and enable a true judge to decide truthfully. Later Justice Iyer rose higher than most coevals because he was fuelled by honesty attuned to justice. There should be no retirement age for such godly judges, who, were they in the American Supreme Court, can continue until their bodies become decrepit. Honesty, integrity and humanity should have no out pass in the highest temple of justice. I hope the President of India will appoint the centenarian V.R.Krishna Iyer as the Chief Justice of India forthwith. Jai Hind!
