Introduction Clincarthill Parish Church was formed in June 2010 following the merger of Mount Florida and Battlefield East Parish Churches. This has been a successful union and both congregations have merged and work well together. We have a lively and active congregation, with a mixture of ages, and a real passion for our community - to care for the people there and to bring them into the body of Christ. We have a forward-looking and welcoming outlook, embracing new ideas, new forms of worship and new means of outreach, whilst retaining the best of our heritage. We balance our spirituality and prayer life with real action within our congregation and community and we look to the future with hope and optimism for the work that God will do within us. The Parish The parish is located within suburban south-side Glasgow. The houses consist of a range of largely tenemental flats in Mount Florida; two blocks of high-rise flats; and larger family houses (villas and terraced properties) at the Kings Park end of the parish. There is a lively shopping area along Cathcart Road, including local amenities such as the primary school and doctors' surgeries etc. The parish encompasses Hampden football stadium, the home of the Scottish national football team and Queen's Park FC.
The Church Buildings The church buildings consist of a newly modernised category 'B' Listed Building. Following the parish merger in 2010, the former Mount Florida Church and Battlefield East Manse were sold, which provided funds for significant building refurbishment and modernisation. The following includes some of the work undertaken: sanctuary modernisation, including new lighting, new sound system, projector and screen installed, expanded chancel, two new 'chapel' rooms formed in the sanctuary trancepts, new heating system throughout the building suite, new kitchen installed, new toilets installed (gents, ladies and disabled), various areas of fabric repairs undertaken, upstairs flatted area modernised, small hall refurbished, redecoration throughout, see 'Life and Work' article: http://www.thomasrobinsonarchitects.co.uk /uploads/pdf/life-and-work-article-clincarthill.pdf A second phase of refurbishment (mainly of the large hall), has been approved by Presbytery and will be implemented May - June 2015. The building suite is therefore modern and fit-for-purpose, and no significant additional work is anticipated to be needed in the near future. Our facilities are well used by local community groups.
The Manse The manse is located five minutes walk from the church. It is a sandstone semi-villa consisting of two storeys and attic, built around 1900, with similar properties round about. It consists of the following accommodation: Ground Floor: entrance vestibule, hallway, WC, kitchen, dining room and sitting room First Floor: 4 bedrooms and bathroom Attic Floor: box/store area and attic bedroom There is no garage but there is a small driveway at the front of the property. There are small gardens to the front and side. There are local amenities and shops within a short walk of the Manse and it is close to both bus and rail stops. Facts and figures Our Membership As at 31st December 2014 our membership roll was 260. We also have a number of adherents who worship with us each week. Sunday morning services have an average of about 150 attending. We also hold evening services (most recently, twice a month) for a small but committed number of people. We have about 20 children and teenagers attending our Sunday morning worship and about 134 youngsters attending our youth groups during the week. Finance Our income over the past three years has been: 2011 123,733; 2012 114,843; 2014 107,031 We pay our Mission and Service contribution every year and also raise significant funds for charities outwith the church. Ministerial contract Our new minister will be appointed initially on a reviewable tenure in line with the Presbytery Plan. See www.presbyteryofglasgow.org.uk Further information is available on request.
Our Past Both former churches come from a tradition founded on the past ministries of strong bible-based teaching and a belief in the power of prayer. We have a commitment to reaching out to the community and the pastoral care of our people. The style of worship has been a mixture of modern and traditional. We would like to build upon these strengths. The Present We have an active and empowered congregation and church life, the main features of which are summarised below. We have not tried to include everything we do here... please visit our website (www.clincarthill.org.uk) for more information. members contributing to the life and vision of the church, suggesting ideas and implementing those initiatives; members contributing to the worship, leading all-age talks, scripture readings, prayers, healing and from time-to-time preaching; a strong emphasis on our spiritual relationship with God, with a commitment to prayer and healing. We hold a monthly service for healing and opportunities for prayer through prayer supper evenings, monthly prayer breakfasts and quarterly prayer breakfasts with local churches. We have a congregational prayer meeting, intercessory prayer team and a telephone prayer circle, all involving a small but committed team of people; strong youth ministry, groups and organisations - including Kid's Church, Young People's Church (for teenagers) and creche on Sunday mornings. YPC attend Powerpoint Scotland Events run by Scripture Union and Alpha Scotland. Also Boys Brigade (anchor boys, junior and senior sections), Brownies, Gems, Youth Club and Holiday Club outreach. We have an active puppet ministry team;
worship includes modern worship songs, led by keyboard, singers and musicians (often with acoustic guitar, electric guitar and violin). We blend this with the best of the traditional hymns, including use of the organ; we organise Alpha courses from time-to-time and some members meet in House Groups for additional bible study, prayer and support; we place a very high emphasis on welcoming people into our church we founded and continue to be heavily involved in a Befriending service (with several Church members on the Board of Directors and others acting as befrienders); we have been recognised by Alzheimers Scotland as Scotland s first Dementia Friendly church. We also run a senior citizens lunch club and a coffee club; women in the congregation have organised a women's Christian conference at Hampden Park Here I am Lord. We have also been active in organising Interfaith events in conjunction with Interfaith Glasgow; adult organisations which are very active include the Guild, Craft Group and Flower Ministry; a good social and fellowship dimension including festival family lunches, film evenings, ramblers group. We also run 'feed-the-fans' events for some football and sports events at Hampden; chaplaincies at Mount Florida Primary School and Queen's Park Football Club.
Our Challenges and our Future We have much to build on, but have many challenges too. With God's grace and blessing we look to the future with optimism and confidence. We are therefore looking for a minister who can inspire us, lead us and walk with us along the Way. Challenges particularly include: attracting more children, young adults and families into the life of the church, possibly through different and challenging worship experiences, not solely on Sundays; developing the prayer life of more people within the congregation; encouraging more people into leadership roles; and the possible development of a Cafe Church. We would like our new minister to continue our tradition of strong biblebased inspirational preaching and teaching. He/she should have a belief in the power of prayer, both for him/herself and the congregation. We expect to be challenged further in our spiritual and prayer lives, both individually and corporately. We are looking for a minister who will encourage everyone to discover and use their God-given gifts and talents in His service - perhaps best described as the leader of a team and not a person who feels the need to do everything him/herself. We would hope for a people-person who is especially skilled in relating to people of all ages and who is able to minister sensitively to their needs. We would hope for well developed presentation skills, sound organisational ability and awareness of the importance of music, including contemporary music, in worship. Our new minister should have enthusiasm and be able to develop with us a practical vision and priorities for outreach to our local community, taking forward some of the existing activities and projects while being ready and willing to embrace new opportunities to share the good news of Jesus with others.
