From the facts given in the first Bible Reading, supply the correct words in the following:- Isaac s wife was called. She was the mother of twins named and. The older one was. ven before they were born, the Lord told their mother that the would serve the. The Bible Readings show us by what strange ways God s declaration about the boys future came true. Jacob, by cheating and lying, got the better of sau on TWO occasions, and so obtained for himself authority over his brother. FIRST OCCSION - TH BIRTHRIGHT: Genesis 5: 9-34 The birthright belonged to the first-born son in any family. It entitled him to be the head of the family, and to have a double share of his father s wealth. (See Deuteronomy : 7.) Jacob, the YOUNGR son, set his sights upon getting it from sau! Under what circumstances did Jacob ask sau for the birthright? What did sau receive in exchange for it? This incident shows that Jacob was a self-seeking person who was prepared to take an unfair advantage, even of his brother, in order to get his own way. But the remarkable fact is that God had a plan for the life of such a crafty, deceitful fellow, and He would work out His plans in Jacob s life. So it is today. God loves us, and longs to have us as His children, in spite of our waywardness. 3 Bibletime

Lesson Read about this in the Key Verse; write it out. SCOND OCCSION - TH BLSSING: Genesis 7: -9 Isaac planned to give sau his blessing, but Jacob, by cheating and lying, tricked sau out of it! Read the verses carefully, then answer these questions:- What made it quite easy for Jacob to deceive his father? In what ways was Jacob disguised, to make him like sau? What part did Rebekah play in this deception? fter some hesitation, Isaac gave Jacob his blessing (see verses 7-9). Just as God had made known years before, Jacob would have great power. ccording to verse 9, in what ways would his authority be expressed? Just as Isaac completed his blessing of Jacob, who arrived? The old blind man was very confused; sau, too, was very upset and angry. Sum up the end of the story by putting suitable words in the spaces below. sau bitterly, and pleaded with his to give him a too. Isaac explained that he had made Jacob _ over him, and it could not be. sau would have to live by his _ all his days. Sadly, the story ends with bitter hatred between the two brothers. What did sau threaten to do to Jacob? The story of Jacob clearly teaches us about the unhappiness and trouble which we can bring upon ourselves when we cheat and lie, instead of allowing God to fulfil His plans for our lives, in His way and at His time. Jacob, as we shall soon see, had to learn that the way of transgressors is hard. (Proverbs 3: 5) For teacher s remarks 3 0

Lesson No. Jacob - The Dreamer Suggested Further Reading Genesis 35: -5 Job 33: 4-8 John : 45-5 Read Key Verse Lesson Genesis 7: 4-46 8: - Genesis 8: 6 Please put your name here sau s threats to murder his brother Jacob were so serious that the wisest course of action for Jacob was to run away to a safe place. To whom did his mother suggest he should go? Name the place where this person lived. Rebekah imagined that sau s anger would quickly die down, and Jacob, her favourite son, could come home again! However, it wasn t going to work out that way, as we shall see! t the close of his first day s travel, what did Jacob do? Describe, IN YOUR OWN WORDS, what he saw in his dream. The most important thing was that GOD WS SPKING TO JCOB! What was He saying about:- The land where Jacob was? His seed or descendants? Jacob s future? t each point, God was giving Jacob wonderful promises, just as He had previously given them to both braham and Isaac. We believe that God is always true to His Word. In spite of Jacob s wrongdoing, God still cared for him, and was at work in his life. The Key Verse records Jacob s sense of wonder when he woke up. Write out what he said.

Lesson Perhaps the frightened, runaway Jacob thought no one knew where he was that night! If so, he was wrong, for God knew! Jacob was so impressed by what had happened that he had to respond in some way. What did he do when he got up? This meeting with God was so important for Jacob that he gave the place a name which means House of God. Write both the name and its meaning. means Today, each of us in some way is like Jacob. Like him, we have sinned, yet God loves us, and wants to save us. We don t have to travel to some special place on earth to meet Him, nor do we have to wait for some special dream. Because the Lord Jesus has died for our sins, we can come now to God by faith. That means we sincerely put our trust in Him, and receive the Lord Jesus into our lives as our Lord and Saviour. Have you found a ladder to Heaven in Him? Before moving on, Jacob made some promises to God. Write a sentence about ON of them. CROSSWORD To finish this study, complete the CROSSWORD. 3 Clues cross. Lesson 3 Lesson No. 3 Jacob - The Disappointments Read Genesis 9: -30 3: - Suggested Further Reading Psalm 03: -5 Romans 7 Key Verse Galatians 6: 7 Please put your name here Following his remarkable experience at Bethel, Jacob went on for hundreds of miles, until he came to Haran, the place from which his mother had come, many years before. Now Jacob wanted to find members of his family. The best place to begin his search was at the well. For what purpose did shepherds assemble at the well each day? When Jacob arrived at the well:- What was the FIRST question he asked? Who was the FIRST person about whom he enquired? Who was the FIRST member of his mother s family whom he met? What was the FIRST way in which he helped her? It was not long until Jacob was warmly received into his uncle s household. How pleased he must have been to be made so welcome. God was keeping His promises! (Genesis 8: 5) His uncle had two daughters. Write their names in the boxes. ) ) Now answer these questions about them:- Which one had Jacob kissed? Which one was the older? Which one was very attractive? Which one had something different about her eyes? ccording to local customs, which should be married first? With which one was Jacob in love? Laban demanded seven years work from Jacob before he could have her as his bride. Why did the seven years seem as a few days? 3

Lesson 3 Seven years later, on his wedding day, how was Jacob cheated by Laban? Think about that! The cheat was himself being cheated! The hard man had met an equally hard master! Life is often like that! The way we treat others may be the very way we shall one day be treated by others! The Key Verse compares it to sowing and reaping. Write out the Key Verse and UNDRLIN the part which reminds us that the wrongs we have done to others will catch up with us. In those days some men had more than one wife, but this was never God s plan. He always intended that a man should have only one wife. See Matthew 9: 5 & 6. In Genesis 3, Jacob is preparing to leave Haran. For 0 years (see Genesis 3: 38) he has been away from home, and has had a hard and busy life, but God has not forgotten him! In a dream God gave him some instructions. What was he to do? re you doing what God wants you to do in your life? Look at the end of Genesis 3: 6 and write IN YOUR OWN WORDS what Rachel and Leah said about Jacob s decision to leave. On his arrival at Haran, he had been entirely alone, but now he was a wealthy man with a big family. Make a list of all the words in verses 7 and 8 which show that he was not going back alone. ) ) 3) 4) How faithful God had been to His word! In himself, Jacob was still the same crafty, deceitful man. For years he had fought a battle of wits with Laban (see Genesis 3: 36-4). But in spite of all his crookedness and craftiness, God was still at work in his life. It is important for all of us to understand that submission and obedience to God is always very much better than going our own selfish way! For teacher s remarks 0

Lesson No. 4 Jacob - The Discovery Read Lesson 4 Genesis 3: -3 33: -7 Suggested Further Reading Colossians 3: -4 James 4: 8 John : 6-0 Key Verse Psalm 86: 5 Please put your name here Now Jacob was on his homeward journey, twenty years after running away from his angry brother, sau. s he approached the area where sau lived, he sent messengers ahead of him to inform sau of his coming. What news did these messengers bring back to Jacob? Their report alarmed Jacob! It seemed as if sau wanted to fight! Jacob did several things to try to ward off any trouble which might arise. Write TRU or FLS after each of these:- He divided all his animals into two large groups. He himself went into the hills to hide from sau. He prayed to God, asking for His help. He decided to go back to Laban. He sent sau a large present. He hurried on by himself to have a personal meeting with sau. During the night, Jacob had a very strange experience. WORD SRCH Read about it again in verses 4-3, then write answers to these questions in the spaces provided, ND also circle them in the WORD SRCH.. How many sons did Jacob have at this time?. Name the ford, or river, across which he put his whole family. 3. Find the answer to the question, What is your name? 4. What did the Stranger do with Jacob all night? 5. What new name did Jacob receive? 6. What name did Jacob give to this place? Now write out the remaining letters in order, (omitting all the s) and arrange them in such a way that they tell what Jacob said about his experience. N S O C D H I D V S N L F B V R T O L S F T C C P N I L I R L G O J W K O B B J 6 6

Lesson 4 This is the key to unlock the meaning of that strange nighttime happening. For Jacob, it was even more important to meet GOD, than to meet his brother. The events of that night were proof to Jacob that God still had plans for his life. He was not going to discard him. Instead, He was going to make a new man out of him, as the change of name suggests. For us today, a personal meeting with God is essential. We can come to Him through the Lord Jesus, and have His forgiveness for all the wrongs we have done. The Key Verse tells us about what He wants to do for us. Write it out. Next day the two brothers met! It was the moment Jacob had been fearing for a long time, but in the event, all went well. Write a sentence to say how sau received Jacob. How happy Jacob must have been to realize that sau had forgiven him! In this respect, sau is a good example for all of us, especially if we are followers of the Lord Jesus. H has forgiven us, and we ought to forgive those who wrong us. Look up phesians 4: 3 and write it out.
