JANUARY 2017 United Methodist Church of the Palm Beaches 900 Brandywine Road, West Palm Beach, FL 33409 OFFICE: 561-687-5411 FAX: 561-687-8348 WEBSITE: www.umcpb.org EMAIL: office@umcpb.org From Pastor Kent Greetings, A blog I was recently reading on the New Year written several years ago was so powerful to me I wanted to share an adaptation of it. We are at the beginning of this New Year ahead in 2017, thankful for the year that has past and has been a gift regardless of the struggles we've endured. This means that anyone who belongs to Christ has become a new person. The old life is gone; a new life has begun! 2 Corinthians 5:17 For most, a new year means a fresh start - new resolutions, new dreams, new hopes, new promises, and perhaps the hope to destroy the bad habits we've made the past year. In some we may succeed, in some we may fail. Let us all be reminded as we ring in the New Year that we are here to worship a God who ALWAYS delivers on His word unlike us. Through Christ, God has promised us fresh renewal and the freedom from the grasp of sin - most importantly eternal salvation! As we enter into this New Year, I pray that our view toward worship, not just in song or during Sunday service, but in the way we live our lives every day brings us to a new journey and new territory. My prayer is that we put off our old self (Eph 4:22) and put on our new nature given to us through the gift of salvation through Jesus Christ! As we now position ourselves for a new year, it is a time to recommit and center ourselves in the faithful hands of God and stand firmly on the Solid Rock and His promises! The symbolism of bringing in a new year provides hope and the gift of a new start: A new start that is God-willed, not self-willed A new start as we renew our mind to let us see God not only in the big picture, but also always in the details. A new start to love one another better and bigger than ever before. A new start to be transformed by the power of God in our hearts and reach the world with the Light shining through us! A new start to transfer our strength to His strength! A new start and an increased level of new hope. A new heart. A new. And I will give you a new heart, and I will put a new spirit in you. I will take out your stony, stubborn heart and give you a tender, responsive heart. Ezekiel 36:26 (adapted Lori Bango, Cornerstone Church Worship Team) United in Christ Pastor Kent

Music and the Arts Page 3 Curbside Mission Café CURBSIDE MISSION CAFÉ IS BACK! The next Curbside Mission Café will be THURSDAY, January 5th from 4:00-6:00. And, no, that s not a typo. We are moving to the first Thursday in the month in 2017. After all of the ham and turkey leftovers, a big plate of our delicious spaghetti will be just the ticket. The price is unchanged and the food will be just as delicious. Please make Curbside Mission Café part of your New Year s resolution so we can make a difference in our world one spaghetti dinner at a time. Thank You! Thank You! Thank You! There were so many that worked together to make I ll Be Home for Christmas a success. The choir alone simply couldn t do handle of those jobs by themselves. If you missed the show or just want to relive the magic, DVDs are available for $10. Just see Cary Collins or Brenda Dye. Reflecting and Visioning 2016 saw some great things in our music ministry. Not only did our Chancel Choir, Praise Team, Glory Bells, and Jan provide beautiful, inspirational moments of worship, but much more. Fine Arts Camp taught kids about God s faithfulness in Not Your Average Joe. Hundreds of homeless were fed a nourishing, hot meal of shepherd s pie prepared by our choir for every 5th Monday meal at First Presbyterian Church, WPB. The Spring Rummage Sale and Fall Festival provided a fun environment for our church to raise needed funds for ministries. The Savior Soles project brought in over 400 pairs of shoes that were distributed to those in need in our community. Curbside Mission Café sponsored by the Chancel Choir raised over $3000 for missions. Great moments of fellowship with singing and luncheons were had with our Sweet Memories senior choir. Our PDO kids learned songs about their great and loving God. I m excited to see what 2017 will hold. No doubt it will hold its challenges, but then again, when is ministry ever supposed to be easy? I know one thing, it will be an adventure that I look forward to. Through The Roof Ministry Page 6 Extending God s extravagant love by opening our hearts and doors to persons with disabilities Happy New Year! I love being able to start with a fresh slate a new year. Actually, we recognize that with Jesus Christ as our Savior, we are given new slates over and over again. During a meeting of our Amigos TAG, I asked who is Jesus to you? The answers were beautiful from my friend to my savior to my everything. One individual replied, Jesus forgives me whenever I do something wrong. Spot on! Over and over Jesus forgives us because Jesus loves you and me. We are given clean slates. The question, then, is what are you going to do with the new year your clean slate? Most importantly, how are you going to live out your faith in the 2017? One way is choosing to serve our individuals with special needs. You can do this in many ways. Pray for this ministry that we begin to grow and reach this population who has been historically turned away by the church. Perhaps you want to help with our events this year. Or maybe you want to come to an Amigos TAG and just help our group feel welcomed and loved. AMIGOS TAG will be meeting on January 8 th and January 15 th. We begin at 4:00 PM in the chapel with praise and worship. Anyone who would like to join us is welcome. You will experience God in the midst of our individuals with special needs coming together to sing, pray and learn about the word. Our planning committee is now working intensely on the Night to Shine prom to be held at our church on February 10, 2017. We are planning for 125 guests with special needs. We would love for you to volunteer at the prom to help our guests feel welcomed. Please either call Phyllis at 561-214-0133 or log onto www.throughtheroofumcpb.net and click on Night to Shine then volunteer registration, if you would like to help. As always, I thank you for the opportunity to serve Christ by serving those with special needs. In Christ s Love, Phyllis HOMEBOUND MINISTRY We recognize at UMCPB that there are some people who want to be part of our church family but cannot physically be present each Sunday. We call the group who ministers to them our homebound ministry. Sue Downing has been our key person in contacting our homebound members. For that we are very grateful. If you know of someone who should receive visits, cards and phone calls from our homebound ministry, please call the church office. Part of this ministry also takes communion that has been consecrated to the homes of our homebound members. We thank Caren Armstrong, Claudia Gumbinner, Jeff Yansura and Bill and JoAnne Shelton for your continued dedicated service to this Home Communion ministry. If you are interested in joining this ministry and serving home communions, please contact Phyllis Parthemer at 561-214-0133 or Phyllis@umcpb.org. Even if you have not done this before but feel called to share God s love with those who cannot attend our services, we would love for you to participate. We will have a training in February.

So often we think of prayer as something we do to break through to God to get His attention and to get Him to listen to us. But intimacy with God is His idea. He has taken the initiative, and prayer is His gift to us. It is an opportunity for us to respond to His invitation to intimacy by calling, crying, and singing to Him. Prayer is our response to the One who has called out to us and desires to be in a relationship with us. In Becoming a Woman of Prayer, Cynthia Heald will encourage you to respond to God s invitation to deeper intimacy with Him. Real Women/Real Life will begin this new study for the new year. The book is available in our church bookstore for $7.00. We will meet for breakfast at 8:00 AM prepared by the Ironmen after which we will move to Room 116 at 8:30 AM for our study and discussion. Invite your friends. It looks like it will be an excellent study! Hope to see you on Saturday, January 14, 2017. For more information please contact Beth Benvenuti at bethbenvenuti@gmail.com
