Matthew alone tells us this grand and seductive story so that we might see the light and know that the child these magi visited is the fulfillment of prophecy, the king of the world that stretches to the magi s home country and beyond, right down the ages to us. We too see and understand anew. Like the magi, our patron saints for this day, we see in the newborn child the king of the universe and light of the world. Like the magi, we find in ourselves a new faith and a new life. Like them, we return to our home by a new route. We are asked to come away from this festive season ourselves renewed and awake to the presence of God among us. We are asked to find God where God is to be found, to be attentive and surprised and ready to bow down in adoration and to offer our gifts. Copyright J. S. Paluch Co., Inc. Dear Parishioners, I hope your New Year is off to a good start with health, happiness (inner peace) and holiness of life. Today we celebrate the Epiphany which reminds us of the universality of God s love for all people. In the Latin culture, the Epiphany is the day when gifts are exchanged in imitation of the Three King s (Wise Men or Magi) bringing their gifts to the Christ Child. Material gifts are usually the outward sign of the deeper reality of the love and esteem the donor has for the recipient. My brother priests and I thank you for your cards and best wishes and I, in a special way, thank you for your generosity to the parish and Catholic Charities during these past few weeks. Since all the bulletins had to be prepared well in advance of the normal schedule due to the holidays, I will publish the results of the collections when we are back to the regular schedule. Again, Happy New Year and a Blessed 2019. Let s pray for each other, Msgr. Kevin B. Noone

After-School Homework Helpers and High School Tutors Needed at the Brooklyn Public Library The Brooklyn Public Library is offering two exciting volunteer opportunities: The After-School Homework Help program trains volunteers age 16 and over to help children in grades 1-8 with their assignments. Volunteers assist students one-on-one or in small groups with all subjects. The High School Tutor program trains volunteers age 18 and over to help high school students in grades 9-12 in all subjects. High School Tutors support, assist and encourage students as they prepare for standardized tests, apply for college, and complete homework assignments. These programs are an important resource to Brooklyn youth, and volunteers gain both satisfaction from helping others and valuable experience working with children. Vocations Committee Bishop DiMarzio has asked that all parishes establish a Vocations Committee. The purpose of a vocations committee is to meet periodically to discuss prayer, campaigns, distribute materials and other ways that we can support the members of our parish who have been called by our Lord to the religious life, to marriage or to serve in another way. If you would like to participate in such a committee here at Our Lady of Angels Parish, please contact the rectory at 718-836-7200. www.whatsmycalling.org www.brooklynpriests.org BEREAVEMENT SUPPORT GROUP Where: St. Ephrem Spirituality Center 935 Bay Ridge Parkway (lower level-entance on the right) When: Monday evenings - Jan. 7, Jan. 14, Jan. 28, Feb. 4, Feb. 11, Feb. 18, Feb. 25, 2019.
