(Jeremiah 33:14-15) Many: We light this first candle as a sign that Hope will find lodging in our homes and hearts this Advent. One: In those days, Judah will be saved and Jerusalem will live in safety. (Jeremiah 33:14-15) All: It is our hope that all everyone in every nation will live and lodge in safety. * RESPONDING IN SONG Muchos son los Dones DE UNITATE ECCLESIAE Soloist: Muchos son los dones, uno el esperanza: el esperanza de Christo. Many are the gifts given, hope is all one, we are one in Christ. * PROCESSIONAL HYMN Come, Thou Long-expected Jesus 125

LISTENING & PRAYING THE NEW TESTAMENT LESSON I Thessalonians 3:9-10 How can we thank God enough for you in return for all the joy that we feel before our God because of you? Night and day we pray most earnestly that we may see you face to face and restore whatever is lacking in our faith. HEARING OUR JOYS & CONCERNS Dale Osborne AN ADVENT MEDITATION PRACTICE ON LOVING-KINDNESS Jesus commands us to both love our neighbor and our enemies. You now are invited to a time of loving-kindness meditation based on Matthew 22: 37, 39, adapted from One Breath at a Time: A Skeptic's Guide to Christian Meditation (Upper Room Books, January 2019). This contemplative practice helps us recognize, accept, and embody God's love so that we may, in turn, extend it to others--our loved ones and those who persecute and frustrate us. May (I/my loved ones/the oppressor/the oppressed) be...... safe... happy... healthy... at peace THE MORNING PRAYER & OUR LORD S PRAYER Our Mother Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our sins, as we forgive those who sin against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen AROUND THE WORD & TABLE * THE GOSPEL LESSON Luke 21:25-36 Please stand as you are able and turn to the center of the Sanctuary for the Gospel reading. One: This is the Gospel of Christ. Many: Thanks be to God. SERMON Where Can Hope Find Lodging? Dana Trent THE GREAT THANKSGIVING One: The peace of Christ be with you! Many: And also with you. One: Lift up your hearts. Many: We lift them up to the Lord. One: Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.

Many: It is right to give our thanks and praise. One: Let us pray and joining our voices in solidarity for all who hope to find lodging and for all of us who can provide it, singing: A JOYFUL EUCHARIST Today, we celebrate God s grace in symbols of bread and cup by the ancient practice of communion by intinction. Beginning with the front pews in each section, use the left aisle to move to stations around the table to receive the bread and dip it into the cup, returning to your seat via the right aisle. During this time you are invited to pass the peace with your brothers and sisters. If you are unable to come forward, please raise your hand and a minister will serve you at your seat. Come to the feast, joyfully, at Christ s table. MUSIC DURING COMMUNION Chorale Variations on Comfort, Comfort Ye My People Johann Pachelbel UNISON READING OF THE BINKLEY COVENANT Professing our faith in Jesus Christ, we covenant with God and one another to live together as members of this church in obedience to God s will as it has been and shall be made known to us. As part of the body of Christ throughout the world, we promise to express our faithfulness to Christ in love for one another and for the whole of God s creation. The Spirit of God assisting us, we further promise to attend the services of this congregation, observe its sacraments, support its mission to all people, practice faithful stewardship of our possessions and be conscientious caretakers of the Earth, endeavoring always to be a fruitful body of Christians. WELCOME TO BINKLEY! Binkley Baptist Church is a community of faith on a journey that calls for questioning, humility and conviction. As followers of Jesus, we embrace spiritual growth, mutual care, and service, assured that as we serve our neighbors, we joyfully serve God. Intentionally inclusive, we welcome people of all races, sexual orientations, and cultures, respecting diverse religious experiences within the church and beyond. We invite others to join us in our commitment to peace, justice, and care for creation. In a spirit of Christian love, we welcome you. The mission of Binkley Baptist Church is building compassionate and joyful community, freely exploring spiritual paths, and pursuing justice and peace in the way of Jesus. THE INVITATION TO CHRIST S TABLE Holy Communion is a sacred and central part of Christian worship. It is a holy act, in which we, individually and corporately, commune with the Loving God. We welcome all who desire a deepened relationship with Christ to the Communion table. From time to time, questions arise concerning the participation of young children in this congregation s service of Holy Communion. The Diaconate recognizes that two historic Baptist principles inform this decision. Baptists are set apart from many other Christian traditions by our practice of Believer s Baptism, which signifies full membership in the church. Traditionally, many Baptist churches encourage persons to receive the Communion bread and cup for the first time after they have been baptized. At the same time, our historic insistence on Soul Liberty reminds us that Baptists value and respect each believer s unique and personal relationship with God. The Diaconate thus recommends that all members of Binkley continue to deepen their understanding of the meaning of Holy Communion, and that families enter into a time of discernment concerning when their children are able to appreciate the sacred nature of Communion. We affirm the responsibility of all believers to determine whether and when they and their children will partake of the Communion elements as we all participate in the service of Communion. THE DISCRETIONARY FUND Today you are invited to make a special offering to the Pastor Discretionary Fund. This fund allows Binkley to support our church and community members who are in financial crisis. Earmark any checks Discretionary Fund in the item section. Envelopes are available in the chair racks.
