THE OLIN T. BINKLEY MEMORIAL BAPTIST CHURCH OCTOBER 16, 2016 BECOMING AWARE The Unjust Judge, like the Good Samaritan and the Unjust Steward, is another notable example of Jesus use of an anti-hero. Never having been to a theological seminary, he was blessedly free of the professional theologian s fear of using bad people as illustrations of the goodness of God. There is an old seminarian s joke that stigmatizes this don tlet-god-be-disreputable attitude perfectly: You go to seminary to learn about all the things God couldn t possibly have done, and then you go to church to ask God to do them anyway. ~Robert Capon, Parables of Grace RINGING OF THE SANCTUS BELL Some traditions ring Sanctus Bells to call worshippers attention to the holy. (Sanctus means holy or sacred. ) Today, the Sanctus Bell rings to signify the holy around, among, and within us. PRELUDE Prelude in B minor Frédéric Chopin THE INVOCATION Tammerie Day * THE CALL TO WORSHIP One: I lift my eyes up to the mountains, from where does my help come? Many: My help comes from the Lord, who made heaven and earth. One: We look not to the mountains or valleys, even heaven or earth, Many: For God is found among us. One: Wherever two or three are gathered in Christ s name, Many: God is here among us. One: Come, let us worship the God of Creation, the God of people, the God of Community. All: Let us follow Jesus and worship together united in faith. * HYMN God of Grace and God of Glory 464 CWM RHONDDA * PASSING THE PEACE OF CHRIST One: The peace of Christ be with you! All: And also with you! Please greet one another with this ancient sign of welcome and extension of hospitality and peace.

HELP HURRICANE MATTHEW VICTIMS: One Great Hour of Sharing (OGHS) supports disaster relief, development projects, and refugee ministries of the American Baptist Churches and its partners. OGHS brings together over 10 denominations across the US to support local and worldwide relief aid. If you are looking for a way to support people affected by Hurricane Matthew and its aftermath of flooding, OGHS is one possibility. Go to http://abc-oghs.org/donate to contribute online or you may write a check to Binkley with OGHS in the item section to offer your support. Thank you to all who are willing to pray or offer support in other ways. The University Mall is collecting food donations for hurricane victims in conjunction with the Food Bank of Eastern and Central NC. Food, paper products, and household cleaning supplies are needed. Visit foodbankcenc.com for more details. Collection boxes will be at various locations in the mall through October 19. GIVE ONLINE: The Finance and Stewardship Committees are pleased to offer online giving at Binkley! Using the tithe.ly app, you can simply and securely contribute to the church using your computer or device. Visit the GIVE section of the Binkley website to learn more, or check out the October issue of the Binkley Beacon for an extensive FAQ on online giving. You can also contact Duane Gilbert at business@binkleychurch.org if you have further questions. SHARE YOUR GRATITUDE: Gratitude is a year-long practice for many of us, but this time of year brings special emphasis to thankfulness. For the November issue of the Binkley Beacon, we want to know what you are grateful for. Send us your stories so we can share our gratitude with one another through the holiday season. Submissions (electronic only, please) are due by noon on October 18 to office@binkleychurch.org. HELP US TIDY UP: In an effort to keep our shared workspace tidy, we ask that you please check the office workroom for any items you may have left behind. Items that cannot be identified will be discarded or donated by October 17. Going forward, any unidentified items left in the workroom will be discarded or donated without notice. If you need to leave something on the counter or table, please label it with your name, the item s purpose, and the date you expect it to be picked up. Thank you for your cooperation!

COMMUNICATING WITH STAFF: We are currently unable to receive voicemails at the Binkley office. If you cannot reach the staff during business hours, please use email, or you may call the ministerial staff on their cell phones: Marcus: 512-492-5130; Dale: 919-923-3874; Stephanie: 919-627-5130; Daniel: 919-641-3770. After initial startup costs, we will be saving on our monthly payments as compared to our current plan with AT&T. Thank you for your continued patience and understanding as we resolve this matter, and thank you to Gary Stutts and Steve Jernigan for guiding us through the upgrade process. We look forward to restoring full communication with our members and friends!
