Just when business was finally booming, Simon and Company closed up shop. The timing was strange, really. After a lifetime of fishing to make a living, these men had just hauled in so many fish that their nets were tearing and the boats were in danger of sinking. Just imagine the profit on the other side of this night s work! Just imagine how their reputation would have grown. How easy it would have been to go out and buy a new fleet of boats and to upgrade their stash of nets. Most likely for the first time, wealth was within reach. And yet, just then, Simon, James, and John left their boats on the shore and followed Jesus in the task of catching men. This is astonishing. Not only did they give up their sudden monetary success, they gave up everything. In a moment s time, these men radically altered their life, their plans, their future, and their fortune. And civilization has never been the same since. Thanks in large part to the courage of these first apostles, and of their successors the bishops, and of all the faithful men and women religious throughout history who have left everything and followed him, our church has continued to flourish and our culture has been greatly enhanced. Those of us who are members of the laity are likewise called to follow Christ, of course. The tremendous sacrifices that priests and religious sisters make should inspire us, and remind us that serving Christ-at any cost-is worth it. Their lives stand as a powerful witness indeed. Today, let us pause to thank God for these men and women and to ask his blessing on them all. -3-

Pastor s Pen Mercy is a force that reawakens us to new life and instills in us the courage to look to the future with hope. -POPE FRANCIS One Faith, Family and Community is the theme around which we are sharing the inspiring story of the Catholic Ministries Appeal. As One Faith Family, we are called as a community to show mercy to others as Pope Francis has asked us to do in this extraordinary Jubilee Year of Mercy. Supporting the Catholic Ministries Appeal gives each of us a remarkable opportunity to "show mercy to others" and touch the lives of so many who are in our family of faith and in our community a neighbor in need of food or shelter, a young man or woman finding their way to God through our youth or campus ministry programs, or a deacon or seminarian studying to serve in our Diocese. More than 600,000 people of God are touched by your generosity each year. Working as one, we can "look to the future with hope." Check out the cool youtube video at www.catholicministriesappeal.org Ways to give 100% of all funds raised Go to Support the Appeal and the Ministries Gifts of Cash Checks should be made payable to the Catholic Ministries Appeal Pledge your gift over 10 months A gift to the Catholic Ministries Appeal may be fulfilled over a ten month period. If possible please include your first month s payment when you mail your gift card/ envelope. Go Green Give Online Please go to www.catholic MinistriesAppeal.org to make your contribution online. Prayer For The Catholic Ministries Appeal Generous God, as Your faithful people we desire to work together through the Catholic Ministries Appeal. May we hear the call of our Holy Father Pope Francis - during this extraordinary Jubilee Year of Mercy - to open our hearts to see the wounds of our brothers and sisters, to feed the hungry and give drink to the thirsty, to welcome the stranger and clothe the naked, to spend time with the sick and those imprisoned." Awaken in us the desire to build our faith family and the strength to enter the Door of Mercy, so we may "experience the love of God Who consoles, pardons and instills hope." We ask this as - One Faith, One Family and One Community - through your Son, Jesus Christ, our Lord. Amen. -4-

K of C Pray for Our Military Fr. Thomas A. Judge Knights of Columbus... Did you Know? In June of 2013 a federal district court in Montana dismissed a lawsuit by Freedom From Religion Foundation seeking to force the U.S. Forest Service to remove a privately designed and maintained monument to soldiers who gave their lives in World War II. Freedom From Religion Foundation argued that the 60-year-old monument which stands in the middle of Big Mountain ski resort in Whitefish, Montana could not be displayed on government-owned land. District Court Judge Dana Christensen, who was appointed in 2011 by President Obama, rejected these arguments and held that the monument did not violate church-state separation. CHURCH IN NEED COLLECTION On February 14, 2016 a collection will be taken for The Church in Need. The monies collected at this time will be shared among three areas of the world where there is particular need for help: Church in Central and Eastern Europe - the Collection provides support for basic pastoral programs and makes scholarships available for students studying to serve their local church. These students become vital participants in the renewal of the Church in the region. The Church in Latin America faces many difficult challenges. Natural disasters in many areas caused lasting damage to the Church, while a significant loss of parishioners to migration and to other faiths, the inability to support itself financially, and a lack of priests and religious to help effectively minister to the large number of Catholics continue to trouble the region. The Church in Africa the funds will go to assisting African countries where poverty, sickness and political strife prevent people from living in dignity. Thank you for your generosity.
