From the Pastor s Desk Dear Parishioners, Easter Experience of Dying-Rising: What does Easter mean to us? Obviously, it is not just a one-day celebration. It is a season. What is more, it is a way of looking at things. It s not a way of looking at certain things but a certain way of looking at everything. Because of Jesus resurrection, we can live our present lives with abiding hope and a sense of freedom. Jesus dying and rising is alive in our lives so that we can keep dying and rising. Changing our direction in life is a big part of the Easter season. The early Christians embraced the change of life. When the apostles preached who had themselves been transformed, the people who heard them were transformed. The Holy Spirit brought about changes unimaginable. We too may feel helpless about our patterns of behavior or cycles of sin, but the Risen Christ can breathe his Sprit on us and blow away our timidity and doubts, our helplessness and insecurities. The spiritual effects of Jesus resurrection may be felt and experienced in our daily lives if we but allow the Easter grace to take hold of our lives. What about those dear departed ones from our own families and our circles of friends? Aren t they all well because of the Risen Christ? Don t they all luxuriate in the endless joy and peace of Easter? Easter, therefore, is magic both for the living and the dead. We cannot view the mysteries of life and death without the light and vantage point of the Easter mystery. Capital Campaign Update: With the last phase of our re-paving and beautification project slated to be completed this coming summer, let s refocus all our resources and energies on this project. The next two and a half months are critical. I would like to invite all donors to consider giving as early as possible. All parishioners are invited---and challenged---to practice the spirit of stewardship toward our Capital Campaign project. May I make a special appeal to those who have not given so far to this project: please help. This is your parish community. These facilities and property are those that you choose to utilize and benefit from on a regular basis. We all have the common responsibility to provide for and maintain the facilities and property of St. Veronica Parish. Here s an update from Terri Ciardella: WE'RE BACK! We may have been quiet this past month and a half in respect of the Archbishop's Annual Appeal, but we have been busy. - The engraved Legacy Bricks and Tiles that were purchased Festival weekend have been installed in the Legacy Courtyard. Please stroll over to the courtyard to read the 92 additional names and messages that grace these new bricks and tiles. - The Oosterman family has been hard at work with the design and installation of the Labyrinth. In just a few more weeks it should be complete! - We are chipping away at the upper lot PIECE BY PIECE! Since the mailing of our Annual Report we have sold 113 squares of pavement for the upper lot. That is a little less then half our goal of 350 squares but we have faith that more help is on the way. We are moving forward with the plan of a summer construction date. For those of you who have donated towards Phase 3 we appreciate your support. Please encourage your fellow parishioners who have not joined in our mission to do so. We have proven with the last 2 Phases that it can be done, let's make it to the finish line! Donation forms can be found in the church vestibule, the Pastoral Center office and the parish website, www.stveronicassf.com. - We have two fundraising events coming up, the Spring Gala on May 9th and the Bocce Ball Tournament on June 6th. Please look for more information in upcoming bulletins and support the chairs with your attendance. Thank you again to all who have donated and continue to donate. Each week we receive donations through the church envelopes and online. The donations are of various amounts and are given with the same spirit of Christian stewardship. Every dollar counts and we realize the sacrifice. THANK YOU! YMI Event: Last Sunday the participants of the YMI Event joined the 8:00 a.m. Mass followed by breakfast in the Falcon Hall. We reflected at Mass on how the Risen Christ calls us to renew our faith by putting that faith into practice in terms of service, as Thomas the apostle was able to do. The so-called Doubting Thomas turned his shaky faith into solid service to God by going to the other end of the world and laying down his life for Christ. At the YMI breakfast, Tammi Grigg, St. Veronica Parishioner of the Year, was posthumously honored. Her husband Eric received the honor on her behalf. Tammi had made her faith fruitful in service. There were other awardees from All Souls, Mater Dolorosa, and Holy Angels Parishes. YMI served a delicious breakfast. The camaraderie was enjoyable. If any men from our parish would like to join YMI, I would highly recommend it. You may talk to Joe Da San Martino about it at the Sunday hospitality after 8:00 and 9:30 a.m. Masses. Religious Humor: When a new preacher moved into town, one of the first people he met said, I certainly hope that you are not one of those narrow-minded ministers who think that only the members of their congregation are going to heaven. I m even more narrowminded than that, replied the preacher. I m pretty sure that some of the members of my congregation aren t going to make it. Your Friend & Pastor, Father Charles Puthota

Pray for our Beloved Deceased In your prayers this week, please remember the repose of the souls of our deceased parishioners, especially: Roman Cansino III died March 26, 2015 Leonardo C. Pailano died March 31, 2015 Eternal Rest Grant Unto Them, O Lord... Reflecting on the Word Third Sunday of Easter In Peter s speech in Acts we find the striking phrase, The author of life you put to death. It is striking first because Peter identifies Jesus with the rather exalted title the author of life - after all, it is God alone who is the author of life. Peter does not come out and say directly that Jesus is God; as is typical of the writings of the New Testament (except, perhaps, the Gospel of John), he approaches the affirmation of Jesus divinity indirectly. It is also striking because it says that we human beings have put the author of life to death. By taking on a human nature, God in Christ has made himself subject to the most devastating of human experiences, death itself. God, who is by nature immortal, joins to our mortal nature to experience death directly and defeat it, as it were, from within. In Jesus, God was embraced by death in order to break death s grip. We see this in the Resurrection. In today s Gospel, we see that resurrection means a real restoration of our human life, and not simply the ongoing existence of an immortal soul. We human beings are a unity of body and soul, not simply a fact that he is careful to make clear by inviting the disciples to touch him and by eating with them. A purely spiritual resurrection would not be enough. Like the physical healing of the beggar by Peter in the reading from Acts, Jesus bodily resurrection shows that God truly is the author of life. For prayerful consideration and discussion: What experience do I have of Jesus as the author of life? How have I seen his life-giving power? What does God s willingness to share our human nature, even to the point of death, tell me about who God is? Praying with the Word Risen Lord, be present among us as the author of life who has conquered death. Give us confidence that nothing can separate us from the love of God. - from Living the Word It is with great joy that we welcome into our church and community the following children who received the Sacrament of Baptism at our Church on Saturday, April 11, 2015 Kaylee Anahi Carrasco America Joan Gomez Fernandez Mateo Lara Baptism Information Registration forms are available from the Pastoral Center during regular office hours, or you may download a form from our website at www.stveronicassf.com.
