The Catholic Bishops say We recall the story of the last judgment (Mt 25:31-46) which instructs us to put the needs of the poor and vulnerable first. In the present Malawi, many people still live in conditions which are hardly compatible with their dignity as sons and daughters of God. Their life is a continuous manifestation of the theory of the survival of the fittest. However, the bishops say it is shocking that a minority who can make decisions and policies which can either uplift the majority poor or further depress their economic prospectsenjoys the fruit of development and can afford to live in luxury and wealth. Faced with this great act of injustice, we have a grave social debt towards the poor who lack access to infrastructures and basic services, the statement reads. The church said the success of an economy should be measured through the narrowing of the gap between the rich and the poor. We have said before that honesty, righteousness, respect, equal opportunity for all; these must be the qualities which guide our nation as it grows and develops in the future (Living our Faith-pastoral letter). We wish to reiterate that in our society characterized by growing prosperity for some and pervasive poverty for others, the basic moral test remains how our most vulnerable are faring. PAGE 3

DO YOU KNOW Where are FLOWERS in the Bible? (answers from last week s questions) 1. In Luke 12: 27-28 what can we learn from lilies? God provides for all of creation. 2. What kind of blossoms were pictures on the tabernacle lampstands? Read Exodus 37: 17-22 Almond blossoms. 3. Which fruit in Isaiah 18: 5-6 starts out as a blossom? (Note: all fruits start out as blossoms.) Grapes. 4. Which flower blooms in the desert of Arabah? (see Isaiah 35: 1-2) The flower is the crocus. (Note: some translations just say flowers. By the way, what is YOUR favorite flower? New Testament Friends FIVE HORSES The book of Revelation is one of the most interesting books in the Bible. When we read this book, it s helpful to remember that it is a story of the visions that St. John experienced. When you are praying to God, most of the time the experience will be a quiet one. But sometimes God gives visions to people and tells them that these visions are to be shared. During the time that Revelation was being written, the early Church was in a lot of danger. The original city where they worshiped Jerusalem was actually destroyed by the Romans in AD 70, about 37 years after Jesus rose from the dead. The four horses in chapter 6 represent some of the bad things that were happening then, such as wars and sickness. We experience some of those dangerous times in our own day. The colors of the horses are white, black, red, and green. In the Bible, bad news is always followed by Good News, and sure enough in Revelation 19 we meet a different white horse, whose rider is called Faithful and True. As Christians we recognize Jesus as the rider of this horse. Christ Jesus has defeated death and prepared a place for all his faithful followers. We, too, may meet with mixed reactions when we use our gifts in the service of God. But, the Gospel assures us, the reward for those who follow faithfully is eternal life.
