NEWSLETTER July 2015 THE AUTHENTIC SELF Pretty darn hard when you have all these shoulds hanging over your head! Is being authentic easy or hard? Your Authentic Self. Is it a state that can be achieved instantly and maintained constantly? As children, before filters and perceptions are developed (or imposed upon us), we were our truest selves. We said what we meant, and we meant what we said. We spoke our minds with conviction and asked our questions with no agendas, no ulterior motives just with pure curiosity. Have you felt some of that natural curiosity and the ease that comes with it, drift away? Does it feel like the essence of who you are is slipping right through your fingers? I, like many of you may, can relate to these feelings. Not knowing who I was and what my purpose was created great distress and great dis-ease. The more questions I asked, the more confused I felt. The more resources I sought out, the more overwhelmed I felt. The harder I looked for the answers, the more lost I felt. I felt like simply being me was the hardest thing of all. Over the last few months of this question-fuelled journey I have been presented with many insights, tips and personal accounts. These may not resonate with you, something else might, but for those who are currently doing distress and dis-ease in the not knowing, please read on. For me, what caused that greatest amount of discomfort was not knowing the answers but feeling like I should. Should know who I am (I have been doing it for nearly 33 years, after all). Should know what brings me joy. And should know how to return to my authentic self. How hard could it be? After a generous mentor spent the morning with me (you know who you are), I walked away feeling the lightest I had felt in months. A little ease was returning to my life. A smile was starting to spread upon my lips again. She told me that rather than fighting the unknown, bathe in it metaphorically that is, though who doesn t like a good bath, right!? Bathe in all the questions. Bathe in all the uncertainty. Bathe in the discomfort, the dis-ease and the frustration. Flow with it instead of against it. Now, it wasn t always easy, but it allowed me, even just for one small moment, to relax, to breathe - to focus on the here and now. The more we focus on that moment, the less distressed we become about the next one. Because there are no next ones, just this one: and this one: and this one you see where I m going with this. When we become more in tune with our wants, needs and desires in each and every one of those single moments, we are one step closer to living our truth: in essence of our authentic selves. Imagine ONLY doing what brings you peace, love and joy in each and every moment of each and every day. Imagine letting go of all the things that don t. Flowing with instead of fighting against. This may seem out of your reach right now, but I assure you, it isn t. Your authentic self is always with you. They always know what you want, need and desire. They may be whispering it to you and you are unable to hear it loudly or clearly. But once you run that bath, slip your shoulds on to the floor, and bathe in it, you will. Enjoy your winter bathing and feel free to let me know what bubbles you have been soaking in I m the one at the front desk enjoying each and every right now with you.... Zoe
