Page 2 (View this bulletin on-line at www.stjoanofarcfl.com) Notes from the Pastor BEING PRESENT: What Technology Cannot Replace The Catechism of the Catholic Church teaches us that we are made to live in communion with God and each other (CCC 45, 959). We desire connection in one way or another. The key is discerning whether our technology helps us to deepen our relationship with God and to those around us. Technology should help us connect with others, defend the voiceless, proclaim our belief or aid in our worship of God. We can find prayers, Mass readings and Scripture commentary online. If, on the other hand, technology becomes a distraction from God s plan and we seek relationships outside of God and others, we are letting ourselves be used by technology. We may feel over-connected with the internet. We have to answer every email within ten minutes. We may also feel the necessity of having to see the latest and greatest on our favorite entertainment site. However, if we change our routine and not look at the internet so often, we may be surprised how little we miss the computer. We will then find more time for people, prayer and the things that truly matter to us. Warning Signs of Technology Overuse: We have fewer deep close relationships with people than we used to. We often feel resentful when family, work or social commitment interrupt our online activities. We frequently use handheld devices to get online or text message during mealtime, Church services, family celebrations or other occasions that are traditionally times of bonding with God or the people around us. We spend more time online for fun than we do in prayer or meditation. If these statements sound familiar, our Internet and social media use is probably throwing our life out of balance. If this is true, then we need to seek out moments of time for unplugged silence during the day. We can refocus ourselves by taking time for prayer or going outside into nature or even going into Church to pay God a visit.

January 21, 2018 (View this bulletin on-line at www.stjoanofarcfl.com) Page 3 T M S. J A P J,,,. THE DEMANDS OF DISCIPLESHIP Today we encounter readings that already have a Lenten feel about them. Nineveh undergoes a forty-day fast, the psalmist reminds us that God alone can show sinners the way, Paul shows us how fleeting the things and events of this world are, and Jesus cries out Repent! before he calls his new followers. Come after me, Jesus says, but if we are to truly live out the commands and demands of our discipleship through baptism, we must first know our need for conversion, our repentance, our need to believe in the gospel fully. Today s Gospel opens with the stark reminder of what befell John the Baptist for completely living out his vocation as the herald of Christ and the gospel: he was arrested, imprisoned, and martyred. Though few of us will experience consequences that extreme, we must all be ready to risk some sort of rejection as, heeding the call of Jesus, we live out the kingdom of God at hand, repent of our sins, and believe in the good news of salvation. TODAY S READINGS First Reading The people of Nineveh believed God and turned from their evil ways (Jonah 3:1-5, 10). Psalm Teach me your ways, O Lord (Psalm 25). Second Reading The world in its present form is passing away (1 Corinthians 7:29-31). Gospel This is the time of fulfillment. The kingdom of God is at hand (Mark 1:14-20). Timothy and Titus Saturday: St. Angela Merici; Blessed Virgin Mary TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION One of the most unusual Catholic churches in the world is in Amsterdam: Our Lord in the Attic, or as the locals say, Ons Lieve Heer op Solder. What looks like a beautiful narrow brick mansion alongside a canal is a clever disguise for a very well-preserved seventeenth-century home and a secret church. During the Reformation, the Netherlands was divided into Protestant Holland and the Spanish Netherlands, now known as Belgium, a Catholic stronghold. Protestant reformers seized all the Catholic parishes in Holland and de-catholicized them. New laws forbade the celebration of the Mass in public. St. Nicholas Church was renamed Old Church by the new owners, and the dispossessed Catholics got to work hiding St. Nicholas Parish in the upper floors of this mansion. Other Catholics did the same thing, but this is the only hidden church that survives today. Sunday Mass is still celebrated here. It s a beautiful hideaway, with nothing spared in regard to marble, gilding, a pipe organ, and classic Dutch painting. A few steps away, the Old Church, begun in 1250, stands emptied of the statues and carvings of its Catholic days, its windows replaced by plain glass. The new tenants gave up when it came to the ceiling, which is still painted with saints, biblical scenes, and merchant ships. The Dutch reformers were tolerant sorts, and as long as the Catholics kept out of sight, they were out of mind. Catholicism was at last tolerated in Holland after 1853, but in 1924 when the International Eucharistic Congress was held in Amsterdam, processions of Catholics were still forbidden in the streets. Today, Roman Catholics are about 19 percent of the population, and there s no need for any of them to hide in the attic. Rev. James Field, Copyright J. S. Paluch Co. We are told that they abandoned their nets and followed Him. What is so amazing is that they didn t hesitate to follow the call of Jesus to a life of service that they didn t understand at the time. They apparently trusted Jesus not even knowing that he was the Son of God, the Savior of the world. Jesus calls each one of us to also follow Him by serving others; and we know that He is the Son of God. Why is it that we so often hesitate or even refuse to answer that call? Jesus once said, Amen I say to you, whatever you did for the least brothers of mine, you did for me. How do we know how and when to serve our brothers and sisters as Jesus expects us to do? The best way to discern our service to others is through prayer. Let us spend time with Jesus each day and be open to His call to serve. St. Joan of Arc Parish has numerous organizations in which we can serve the needs of others. We all have something to give, whether it is our time in prayer for those in most need of God s healing, mercy or forgiveness; or whether it be our actual service in one of our many parish organizations. There have certainly been many times in our lives when we received the help we needed. Now is the time for us to give our time and talent to others in need. In addition to serving others, let us also consider sharing our financial resources with them. We are now at the beginning of our 2018 Annual Pastoral Appeal. This is our ongoing way to assist those organizations throughout our diocese who need our financial support. These organizations include Catholic Charities, our seminary, our schools and our prison ministries. For where your treasure is, there also lies your heart. Matthew 6: 21 (Deacon Lee is ill. Please keep him in your prayers.)

Page 6 (View this bulletin on-line at www.stjoanofarcfl.com) MASS INTENTION REQUESTS Offering Mass for a special intention has been a long standing tradition in the Catholic Church. It is usually considered that special graces are received by the person who the intention is for. Masses are said for many reasons; for a deceased person, for a living person, in honor of someone s birthday, in honor of someone's anniversary, etc. The name of the person or persons we are praying for is mentioned in the general intercessions, by the priest at Mass and in our weekly bulletin. If you would like to have a Mass said for someone, living or deceased, please go to the Parish Office. A Mass Card will be given to you as a reminder of the time and date you requested. A NOTE TO PARISHIONERS Any parishioner wishing to obtain a 2017 Tax Financial Statement, please contact the Parish Office to request it. THANK YOU. January 21, 2018 BLESSING OF THE THROATS St. Blaise is the patron of Throat problems and the Wool trade. St. Blaise was a well educated physician who became Bishop of Sebaste in Armenia. He was persecuted by Agricola, the famous Roman general who ordered Blaise to renounce his faith. When Blaise refused he was thrown into prison where he helped sick prisoners and famously saved a child who was choking on a fish bone. Blaise refused to renounce his faith and was tortured by having his flesh torn with wool combs. He was finally beheaded on the orders of Agricola. Because of saving the child he was named the Patron Saint for Throats. St. Blaise Day is celebrated on Feb. 3rd each year. If you would like your throat blessed, please come to celebrate Mass on Saturday at 9:00 AM on February 3rd. IN HIS FOOTSTEPS The In His Footsteps Soup & Sandwich $1 Campaign will be held after each of the Masses this weekend. Thank you for your generous support to our program.
