Epiphany Star Page 2 Welcome to a New Year! After the busy-ness of the Christmas and New Year s holidays, many believe that January is supposedly a dead time of the year. That is simply not so in God s church and certainly not here at Epiphany! On Sunday, January 6 th we will welcome Bishop Kee Sloan for his visitation and a service of Confirmation. This year we have ten new individuals being Confirmed or Received into the church. Please make plans to join us and celebrate with these new members! The day will include a Potluck Lunch in honor of our Bishop and new Confirmands (see elsewhere in this newsletter for what to bring). In the week following the bishop s visit, our Financial Assistant (Traci Lamb), Treasurer (Lamar Auman), Assistant Treasurer (Shari Harrison), Finance Ministry members and the current Vestry will be hard at work developing the Parish Program (also known as the budget) for 2019. These leaders work very hard for all our sakes at Epiphany, and deserve our prayers. Voting on the Parish Program at the January Vestry Budget meeting is the final act of the Outgoing/Retiring Vestry members, who are completing their term of service. Please join me in giving special thanks for the leadership, dedication and hard work shown by Doug Cooke, Rick Cooley, Jack Frost, Sam Harrison, and Jan Maxwell. There experience is greatly appreciated and their presence will be sorely missed! I pray for their wisdom and discernment as they explore new ways to serve in our community. In the third week of January, your new Vestry will gather together with other leaders in the parish for orientation and training, which will help prepare them for a new year in the life of the church. Please keep them in your prayers as they live and work more fully into their new duties and responsibilities. On the final Sunday of the month, January 27 th, we will gather as a community between the morning services for our Annual Parish Business Meeting. We will hear reports from all the many ministries we engaged in 2018, hear a presentation on the budget, and look to the future and what 2019 might bring. As you can see, January is a busy time in our community. I am excited to see and hear what God has in store for us! Happy New Year! Epiphany Star Page 3 EPIPHANY SEASON WITH EPISCOPAL MIGRATION MINISTRIES RETURNS During the season of Epiphany, beginning Sunday, January 13, at 9:30 am, your adult Christian Formation Ministry will present the 2019 version of a series of lessons from Episcopal Migration Ministries. Grounded in the lectionary texts for the season of Epiphany, we will explore God s call to support this important ministry of the church. As ever, this time of year is when Episcopal Migration Ministries helps us pause to remember our own sacred story and the history of the ministry. We remember the Holy Family s flight to Egypt to escape King Herod s massacre, when they became refugees desperately seeking safety. We remember those in the Diocese of Southern Ohio who spoke out in support of refugees eighty years ago, during the heightened anti-immigrant and anti-refugee attitudes that permeated popular culture and politics at the time. We give thanks for their courage and their witness. And we wonder: could they have ever known that their efforts would grow to become Episcopal Migration Ministries? Could they have ever dreamed that The Episcopal Church would continue what they began, resettling more than 95,000 refugees in the last thirty years alone? Their legacy has blessed countless lives new Americans, their children, their children s children with hope, opportunity, love, and life itself. Please join us for this update on Episcopal Migration Ministries and the challenges we face as our government continues to lower the number of refugees that will be permitted into the United States. ANIMATE: BIBLE In the Episcopal Church, we value, Scripture, Tradition, and Reason. Have you ever wanted to know more about the Scripture leg on our three legged stool? If so, join us on Sunday mornings at 9:30 starting Jan 27 for Animate: Bible. We will discuss and learn from people like Rachel Held Evans, Eric Eines, Phyllis Tickle, and Nadia Bolz- Weber. Optional journal for class is available at: https://www.wearesparkhouse.org/store/ category/286834/animate-bible

Epiphany Star Page 4 Happening #74 March 1-3, 2019 How will you serve? HAPPENING is a Christian experience for high school youth in 10 th through 12 th grades. During the weekend, the participants spend time seriously considering the person and teaching of Jesus Christ in a relaxed, fun, informal and loving atmosphere. They are provided with opportunities to share, discuss, learn and live with fellow Christians in an environment of acceptance and understanding. The staff of a Happening is made up primarily of teenagers who lead the weekend and take care of the Happeners. The adults are logistical support; serving as cooks and chaperones. Priests are present during the weekend as Spiritual Directors, giving some of the addresses and serving as chaplains. Epiphany is very fortunate to be the host parish for Happening #74. This wonderful experience for these young people from all over Alabama brings a great responsibility for our parish. We will need your help in several areas, but the most challenging will be arranging for showers for each Happening participant as well as each staff member. Not only do we have to find a way to get each person showered on Saturday and Sunday mornings, we have to do it with some time constraints. Epiphany parishioners who live within 15-20 minutes from the church, please consider volunteering to pick up youth and/or staff on Saturday and Sunday morning, take them to your home for a shower, and return them to the church. We are projecting anywhere from 75 to 100 participants and staff. Please Mark your calendars January 27 th Following our Parish Business Meeting and during coffee hour you will have the opportunity to learn how you can serve as Epiphany hosts Happening #74.
