THE SOVEREIGNTY OF GOD
Do you agree with A.W. Tozer? Here is my view: God sovereignly decreed that man should be free to exercise moral choice, and man from the beginning has fulfilled that decree by making his choice between good and evil. When he chooses to do evil, he does not thereby countervail the sovereign will of God but fulfills it, inasmuch as the eternal decree decided not which choice the man should make but that he should be free to make it... Man s will is free because God is sovereign. A god less than sovereign could not bestow moral freedom upon His creatures. He would be afraid to do so. - A.W. Tozer
GOD S SOVEREIGNTY IN THE OLD TESTAMENT In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. Gen. 1:1
GOD S SOVEREIGNTY IN THE OLD TESTAMENT Whatever the LORD pleases, He does, In heaven and in earth, in the seas and in all the deeps. - Ps 135:6 The One forming light and creating darkness, Causing well-being and creating calamity; I am the LORD who does all these. - Is 45:7
GOD S SOVEREIGNTY IN THE OLD TESTAMENT Remember the former things of old; for I am God, and there is no other; I am God, and there is none like me, declaring the end from the beginning and from ancient times things not yet done, saying, My counsel shall stand, and I will accomplish all my purpose, Is. 46:9-10 But now, O LORD, you are our Father; we are the clay, and you are our potter; we are all the work of your hand. Is. 64:8
GOD S SOVEREIGNTY IN THE OLD TESTAMENT Who has spoken and it came to pass, unless the Lord has commanded it? Is it not from the mouth of the Most High that good and bad come? Lam. 3:37-38 All the inhabitants of the earth are accounted as nothing, and he does according to his will among the host of heaven and among the inhabitants of the earth; and none can stay his hand or say to him, What have you done? Dan. 4:35
GOD S SOVEREIGNTY IN THE OLD TESTAMENT I know that you can do all things, and that no purpose of yours can be thwarted. Job 42:2
GOD S SOVEREIGNTY IN THE NEW TESTAMENT Are not two sparrows sold for a penny? And not one of them will fall to the ground apart from your Father. Mat. 10:29 To keep the commandment unstained and free from reproach until the appearing of our Lord Jesus Christ, which He will display at the proper time He who is the blessed and only Sovereign, the King of kings and Lord of lords, I Tim 6:14-15
GOD S SOVEREIGNTY IN THE NEW TESTAMENT So then it depends not on human will or exertion, but on God, who has mercy. For the Scripture says to Pharaoh, For this very purpose I have raised you up, that I might show my power in you, and that my name might be proclaimed in all the earth. So then he has mercy on whomever he wills, and he hardens whomever he wills. You will say to me then, Why does he still find fault? For who can resist his will? But who are you, O man, to answer back to God? Will what is molded say to its molder, Why have you made me like this? Has the potter no right over the clay, to make out of the same lump one vessel for honored use and another for dishonorable use? What if God, desiring to show his wrath and to make known his power, has endured with much patience vessels of wrath prepared for destruction, in order to make known the riches of his glory for vessels of mercy, which he has prepared beforehand for glory Rom 9:16-23
