Pastoral Pondering Paul, in his first letter to Timothy, speaks to us about how merciful God was to him! Mercy is indeed, the special highlight of this jubilee year! Paul needed mercy because he knew that, before his relationship to Jesus Christ, he was a blasphemer, a persecutor and a man of violence, in opposing Christians. He knew he needed mercy because, despite all his shortcomings, God nevertheless judged him faithful and appointed him to service of the Gospel. But God s mercy wasn t just for Paul! He makes it abundantly clear that the best demonstration of God s mercy for all of us is that he sent Jesus into the world to save sinners. That was Jesus primary mission! He was sent to bring us back, to show us a better way, to rekindle in our hearts a deep down longing and desire to be at one with God in mindset and purpose. Even though we weren t worthy of it, God had mercy on us! Even though we weren t repentant at times, God had mercy on us! Even though we didn t appreciate and value the great graces God lavished upon our lives, at times, God had mercy on us, over and over! The experience we all have had of God s mercy should then be the springboard for our own merciful actions toward others who may have trespassed against us. Our experience of God s mercy, when practiced on a continual basis and kept firmly fixed in our mind has the added benefit of witnessing to those, who have yet to believe in Christ, just what he offers to all humanity. It also gives us a way to cope with conflictual situations in a productive and healthy manner. In a sense our merciful mindset becomes an evangelical tool that leads others to the eternal life God has offered to all of us! So let us never stop following the example of Christ and imitating the great missionary, St. Paul, in living the mercy we have received and generously offer it to others. A pastoral pondering as we continue our journey in this 24 th week of Ordinary Time. - Fr. Sam CRAFT GROUP The Craft Group will be starting up again on Friday, September 16.
