It does not insist on its own way; it is not irritable or resentful; 6 it does not rejoice in wrongdoing, but rejoices in the truth. 7 It bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things. 1 Corinthians 13: 4-7 You can find parts of this passage from 1 Corinthians all over Hobby Lobby or Walmart. It is so popular I think because of its importance for couples preparing for marriage. In the last five years of ministry I have seen wedding after wedding, where a couple has picked this as one of their scripture readings. How could you fault them - this is a beautiful text! It may surprise you to know that Paul, the author of 1 Corinthians, was not writing to married couples. In fact, Paul was writing to a church filled with fighting, a church that forgot what love meant and what Christ love means for us. You see, Paul was trying to replace the social status of the time with love. Paul speaks of love that seeks to be in relationship with one another, love that is mutual and equal. This love calls the church to love just as they have been fully known and love by God. February has turned into a month filled with many ideas about what love is and what love does. I invite you this February to not only think about romantic love, but what it truly means to love your neighbor even as Christ has known and loves you. What would it look like if we held ourselves to the idea that love is kind, patient and not envious or boastful? How would our church change? How would our community change? How would our relationships change? Sending you the love of Christ, Pastor Chris

Since that day, more than $98 million has been raised for local charities across the country through Souper Bowl of Caring. It has become a powerful movement that is transforming the time around Super Bowl weekend into the nation s largest celebration of giving and serving. Through this mission, young people learn what it s like to make a positive difference in the world as they collect food, raise money and volunteer to work in charities that provide shelter to the homeless, food to the hungry and compassion to those in need. Be part of this movement that is sharing God s love with those in need. Please give generously on Super Bowl Sunday. The money we collect from First Lutheran will go to Mandan s Backpack for Kids program, our 2019 Souper Bowl of Caring charity of choice. We will take donations on February 3rd at both services. Buy a candy bar and support our youth going on the Mission Trip. You can even buy one for your Valentine! Check out the article on the Souper Bowl of Caring on page 10. The youth will be taking the offering at the beginning of both services on February 3rd.

PAGE 6 Missouri Slope Lutheran Care Center/Valley View Heights Thank you to all the members and staff at First Lutheran Church for collaborating with us in ministry! We appreciate the volunteer hours and financial gifts that are shared with our residents and facility. It has been an exciting year for our Foundation and our organization. Plans are currently being developed for us to convert the former Good Shepherd North Campus into our second property. We look forward to sharing those with you as we move forward. Your financial gifts have blessed us in a number of ways, including the purchase of additional exercise equipment for our assisted living facility and our physical therapy department. We also paid for fresh flowers for our resident dining rooms, a new AED machine for Valley View Heights, and new resident lounge furniture, among other purchases. We could not support our facilities and residents in this way without your support. We look forward to our work and service together in 2019. Powerful Tools for Caregivers Whether you provide care for a loved one at home or in a care facility, whether down the block or miles away, yours is an important role.
