August 13th 2017 The 19th Sunday in Ordinary Time 4 SCHEDULE OF MASSES MONDAY AUGUST 14 TH 7:00 PM TUESDAY AUGUST 15 TH 6:30 AM 9:00 AM 10:30 AM LATIN 12:30 PM

August 13th 2017 The 19th Sunday in Ordinary Time 5 Dear Friends, I have been back from my vacation as of the first of the month and by the time you read this I will be well and truly back in the swing of things. Vacation affords one a change of pace, a change of scenery, a temporary suspension of normal routines and duties, time to relax. As a pastor, I can assure you however, that neither the parish itself nor you were ever very far from my thoughts and attention even during vacation time. First of all, the more leisurely pace enabled me to pray my Daily Office, do my spiritual reading and reflection and to offer Mass in a more quiet and reflective manner. Almost every day I offered Mass in the private chapel and spent more time than is normally possible in the busy public Sunday and weekday celebrations of Mass to pause and remember all your intentions. One of the sayings of Saint Dominic, whose feast day is this week, was Contemplata aliis tradere : which can be translated as to Hand on to others the things you have contemplated. The most important thing a parish priest can do for his people is to be a man of prayer and contemplation. He can be a man of many natural talents and abilities, a crack-a-jack administrator, an orator or even an entertainer, an all around nice guy ; but if he is not a man of prayer, not a man who has a daily relationship with Jesus Christ, living in the company of the Blessed Virgin and the Saints by liturgical and personal prayer, his impact on the lives of his people will likely be no more than just natural or even ephemeral. It has taken me a long time to realize this in my own life as a priest as more than just the sort of things priests are expected to say. In the last few years I ve evolved a firm program of life that puts prayer and reflective spiritual reading to the fore. This by no means is perfect and is always in need of reinforcement. I came to the conclusion that I needed to get up earlier, and before I leave my living quarters to face the day, to have already prayed the first three hours or parts of the Breviary, pray some simple personal prayers, and to engage in reading the Fathers of the Church or good spiritual authors for at least 15 to 20 minutes. (Not without a few mugs of coffee along the way!) This week and the next in particular during our Summer CCD Program the lives of the Saints will be the theme of my daily homily at the 9 AM Mass. Let s pray for each other! God s blessings, Father Hewes

August 13th 2017 The 19th Sunday in Ordinary Time 6 RELIGIOUS EDUCATION The Place for Learning and Praying Our Family/Children s Mass is Sunday at 9:30 a.m. Mary Donaldson, Director, Rita Minder, Assistant Religion Office Phone 864-3321 Fax 499-1530 maryccd@smrcc.org. LOOKING AHEAD Registration forms for the upcoming Winter Program (September 2016 thru April 2017) are coming in at a steady pace for students in grades two through eight. Please return these yellow forms as soon as possible. When registering a new student, 1st thru 8th grade, you must come into the Religion Office on the second floor of the Parish Center, Monday through Thursday, between 11:00 AM and 4:00 PM. Please be sure to bring a copy of the child s Baptismal Certificate when you come. The fee of $175.00 per child is due at that time. SUMMER PROGRAM Our Summer Program is at the halfway mark and going quite well. We begin with daily Mass, then move on to class, snack, music and recess. We also have special event days each week. The students, helpers and teachers greet each day with a great spirit of anticipation and enthusiasm. Summer Program fever is contagious pretty much our whole Parish staff catches it and everyone contributes to making the experience wonderful. Everyone involved in the Summer Program should be in the Church for our Sunday Masses by 9:10 AM so they can be seated in the proper area and are not late for Mass. Please remember your tithing envelope each Sunday as they are not only used for a donation but also to take attendance. We ask that the parents and children please use the crosswalks and follow the directions of our security/traffic guards when entering and exiting the building as the parking lot is extremely busy during those hours. During the week, the students will be attending the 9:00 AM Mass. We invite the parents and all parishioners to join us at that Mass.

August 13th 2017 The 19th Sunday in Ordinary Time 7 This weekend only! August 12th and 13th We will be collecting slightly used and new clothing for girls and boys ages 3-15 years old for the St. Vincent DePaul Society and Fr. Tom's orphanage in Ghana. Please call John Gatto at 499-8520 ext. 117 for further information. Please join us in welcoming Fr. Raul Caggauauan, a Missionhurst - CICM (the Congregation of the Immaculate Heart of Mary) missionary who will be visiting our parish the weekend of August 19-20 to present a mission appeal. Fr. Raul is from the foreign mission Province of Dominican Republic and will be sharing his life and dedication to the people he serves with us. Missionhurst - CICM was originally founded in 1862 for the conversion of China. Today, Missionhurst - CICM serves in some of the most remote places of Mongolia, Indonesia, Africa, Asia and Latin America. Unlike some relief organizations that come only when there is a news-making crisis, Missionhurst - CICM missionaries come prepared to stay, living among the people, sharing in their privations, and participating in the day-to-day effort needed to achieve life-long spiritual and material changes. In response to the people's most urgent need, Missionhurst - CICM missionaries may start a new farming project, build a new chapel or school or lay clean water supply lines. Fr. Raul will be preaching at all the masses and a second collection will be taken with proceeds going to Missionhurst - CICM. Catholics For Freedom of Religion www.cffor.org Freedom of Religion Imposters: Under the guise of claiming religious freedom, anti-religion and atheist groups promoting Satanic Temples, monuments, black masses, and after school Satan Clubs, are intent on mainstreaming Satanism in America. These satanic groups seek social acceptance and want to be viewed as normal. "Using the false argument of religious freedom... (these groups) seek to put satan in the news and make satanists accepted at the table," said John Horvat, author of Return to Order. Students and citizens in communities from Minnesota, Oklahoma, Texas, Harvard University in MA, and other states, have peacefully protested these anti-god groups and, in most cases, have succeeded in stopping their efforts. "It is remarkable what one person can do when he stands proud and pushes back," said Rabbi Aryeh Spero, author of Push Back. August 13th 2017 The 19th Sunday in Ordinary Time 10 Gifts for all occasions... We have many books to read including books for children in Spanish. The Gift Shop is located in the Parish Center, across from the Receptionist area. All Proceeds Benefit Our Parish. SENIOR NEWS YES After experiencing several delays of dates for the restaurant in Greenport, I have requested a switch to Monday, August 28. Everything else remains the same. The bus will leave at 9 am for the town of Greenport, where there will be time for browsing the shops. I'm told that there is a carousel and a lovely park, if you would prefer to sit and watch the world go by. We will then enjoy lunch at a waterside restaurant and after that, it's off to the beautiful Raphael Winery. Once there, we will enjoy a tasting of four wines, four varieties of cheeses, bread and accompaniments. On the way home, we will stop at a farm stand. The cost for the day will be $72 pp all inclusive including all tips. I'm happy that I was able to book it with no increase in price. I hope that this event will be as popular as it was last time. Those who signed up already, please call me to confirm because all the details were not clear at that time, and also the date has changed. Remember to pray for all those who are ill and for their loving caregivers. Pray always for those who protect us and this wonderful country that we live in. God bless America. See you in church, Pat 631-667-7922. Fill your friends lives with sweetness. Speak approving, cheering words while theirs ears can hear them, and while their hearts can be thrilled and made happier. The kind of things you mean to say when they are gone, say BEFORE they go. George W. Childs

The Life Center is a crisis pregnancy center that counsels women and men who are experiencing an unplanned pregnancy. Did you know that they provide: free pregnancy tests maternity housing with eligibility requirements medical care referrals cribs car seats diapers and all other baby items that may be needed We are asking that you pick up a baby bottle and fill it with your donation. (Make checks out to the Life Center of L.I.) PLEASE RETURN THE BOTTLES ON September 9 th & 10 th Most importantly, we are asking you to recite the prayer on the bottle. The prayer attached to the bottle will enable the counselors at The Life Center to say just the right words a mother or father may need to hear. It especially opens a mother s heart to accept the truth. We believe these prayers lead abortion-minded women to call The Life Center in the first place. Let us pray with our whole heart for the lives of our unborn children.
