Twenty-Fourth Sunday in Ordinary Time September 11, 2016 Dear Friends, This weekend we are celebrating the Twenty-Fourth Sunday in Ordinary Time and both the first reading from Exodus and the Gospel of St. Luke speak about those who are lost. In the Exodus reading, the wandering Hebrews have turned aside from the way and the golden calf signaled Israel s fear that their leader, Moses, had left them. In today s Gospel, a sheep, a coin, and an errant son have been temporarily lost, but the stiff-necked people in the Gospel AREN T those who have sinned, but are those who despise the sinners. As often is the case with Jesus in Luke s Gospel, the literary device used in this 15 th chapter GETS US to think more firmly on HOW we see the Lord and HOW if, when things get bad, when we demand much, when we walk the path apart from the Lord, we need to repent and, as last week s Gospel challenged us, to REORDER our priorities to find our way WITH God and that God is WITH us, no matter what! There are so many images of the prodigal son and so I offer this Rembrandt charcoal for you to reflect on and pray this beautiful image of welcome and allow your prayer around this image to guide you in your response to the Lord this week! HERE S a parish wide INVITATION: As we have begun a whole new year of education and formation, of new programming and opportunities, ARE you interested in becoming: a Server? an Usher? a Lector? an Extraordinary Minister of Holy Communion? a Choir Member? an accompanying Musician? We can ALWAYS enhance our celebration of Mass WITH new members in ALL of our LITURGICAL MINISTRIES. Call me this week and leave me your interest. Consider this your apostolic call to ministry! UPDATE on the Capital Roof Project The FLAT portions of the School Building have been stripped and cleaned and the new TPO product has been laid down. The Construction workers are building up the sides of the flat roof in order to allow for proper drainage. They are in the midst of wrapping the product around the exposed soffit and flashing and this may take several more weeks. West Side Roofing will be ever conscious of the students and staff in the building as they are working carefully to complete the process. Thank you for financial supporting and funding the project to #KeepRkidsDry! Have you dropped in your September envelope yet? Your dollars spent on this first project DO go a long way! Each one of us is so very VITAL to the WHOLE PROJECT! THANK YOU for your sacrifices for the Roof! Many THANKS for your weekly financial support in the Sunday collection. We are blessed indeed! Father John

It is easier to put ourselves into the if we can see how the people we read about are like ourselves. Come and see how you can relate to the people of Israel. No prior knowledge of scripture is needed as we open these stories together. Just bring your Bible and a listening heart. Quiet Prayer Quiet prayer will meet in the chapel on Tuesday at 12:30pm. Contemplative prayer is one way of opening our hearts to the words of God that the noise of the world often drowns out. Why not make use of this opportunity to experience contemplative prayer in a group setting? All are welcome to join us. Come and see if this type of prayer might benefit you on your spiritual journey? 12 Step Spirituality 12 Step will meet in the chapel on Thursday from 2:30p - 4:00pm to discuss Steps six and seven. Family Perspectives The older brother in today s Gospel parable resented the second chance his prodigal brother received from their father and missed out on the party. Is your heart held captive by resentment toward any family member and preventing you from receiving God s blessings? If so, pray for the grace to forgive and become merciful like the Father. Catholic Communication Campaign During the last weekend of this month our parish will take up the collection for the Catholic Communications Campaign. This collection communicates the Gospel through Catholic social media activities and enriches our faith through podcasts, television, radio, and print media. Half of all proceeds remain in our diocese and support local needs, so please be generous in this collection. Popcorn Sale - Next Weekend St. Mary s Cub Scout Troops will be selling Popcorn after all the Masses next weekend. (9/17 & 9/18). Please help support this worthwhile endeavor by the Cub Scouts. I remember exactly when I found out what happened. I was sitting in my fifth grade social studies class when our principal made the announcement over the PA system: the World Trace Center (which I did not know what it was at the time) had been hit by a plane by terrorists, and lots of people were hurt. All of the kids were spreading rumors that schools were being bombed and that our school was next. I felt so lost, and I was very scared. The entire school was gathered into the gym and we had an impromptu prayer service where we prayed for safety and the health of those who were at Ground Zero. God was there to envelope us in a place of comfort when such terrible things were happening. Our Gospel reading this weekend tells of those who are lost and then are found. When you find yourself lost, due to fear, anger, or resentment, trust that God is always there waiting for you with open arms, and he is ready to carry you through your troubles. Choir Rehearsal Schedules: Traditional Choir meets to rehearse on Tuesday evenings at 7.30pm. Youth Choir also has rehearsals on Tuesdays at 6.pm. Contemporary Choir meets next on September 22 nd, and then will rehearse on the first and third Thursday of every month starting in October at 7.30pm. If you are interested in participating in any of these choirs, cantoring, or playing an instrument during mass, please call or see me after mass up in the loft. Call the music ministry office for more information: 440.243.3877 ext 27.

SMS families - - Mark your calendars PTO is busy planning the Annual Fall Hayride scheduled for Saturday, September 24th. Information went home in your Friday Family email. We hope to see you there!! The Early Childhood wing was all a buzz this past week with our preschool students returning to the classroom. Mrs. Lake, Mrs. Sambenedetto and Mrs. Habian were so excited to see so many eager and energized young faces. They were pleased to see how quickly the little minds were grasping classroom rules and procedures. Mrs. Lake and Mrs. Sam feel it is going to be a great start to the beginning of their educational experience! Adoration was held at SMS on Friday, September 2nd. If you ve never been to Adoration, you may be surprised at how reverent and calming it can be. It is very quiet, no conversations, no singing, nor vocal prayers. It is a time to reflect between you and God. Students typically bring a prayer book or devotional and spiritual reading material or they may just sit and mentally reflect.
