Perhaps. But Malachi explains that only dark, sunless days are in store for those who do not find a place for God in their lives. Conversely, he tells us that the warmth and light of God s healing justice await those who fear the Lord. That s a pretty comforting notion especially now in the already short and growing even shorter days of November. It s the sun-warmed stone, and then some. Paul speaks to us of justice as well, but points out that it is not a passive thing. To be treated justly, we need to do our fair share. If we are diligent and persevere we will be rewarded with and by the fruits of our labor. Lastly, Luke, too, tells us to persevere in faith, this time and our lives will be secure in God regardless of how we are treated by our enemies. Copyright J. S. Paluch Co. FAITH FORMATION All adults are invited to Adult Faith Formation on Sunday mornings, 10:15-11:45, in the parish center. No registration needed come when you can! From Your Pastor 11/13/2016 Where were you, Father Baker? Page 3 Well, Last weekend, it was my duties as district dean that took me from the parish. I had the pleasure of visiting the parish community of St. Francis de Sales on E 96 th St. It is part of my duties as dean to visit the parishes of the deanery, and meet with the people who make the parish work. I will be doing this the first Sunday of the month most months this year. Family Catechesis We had a wonderful family faith experience this past Saturday, as our parish hosted its first family catechesis. Family catechesis is an integral part of our parish s religious education program, but we open the family catechesis sessions to ALL families with children who want to share and learn together as a family about their faith. Thanks again to our Pastoral Associate Maryann Tyrer and all the people who work so hard in our faith formation program. Family Mass Perhaps it was the marathon, but we had the biggest family mass yet this past Saturday. Everyone who came remarked at how many children were in attendance. I want to thank the parent s association of St. Stephen s School for all the work they do on the mass setting up tables and serving refreshments for the scores of parents and children who stay after. What are those envelopes for...? Very often I forget that in our modern world, that the meaning of old Catholic customs can seem strange and their meaning can be forgotten. Recently someone asked me what that little bundle of envelopes in the sanctuary was for. They are ALL SOULS ENVELOPES. You might remember a couple of weeks back I wrote about how we Catholics believe that, as members of one body the dead can pray for the living (that is what the saints do the pray for us in heaven) and we can pray for the dead. That is what we do at every mass, pray for the living and the dead, but in the month of November we remember in a special way all those who have gone before us marked with the sign of faith as the priest prays in the mass. On all Soul s Day, people take those envelopes and write the names of their deceased loved ones and we place them near the altar. We are supposed to remember them at every mass during that month. A good prayer to say for the deceased when you see those envelopes is the old Catholic prayer for dead, used at every funeral: Eternal rest grant unto them. O Lord. And let perpetual light shine upon them. May they rest in peace Amen. May their souls and the souls of all the faithful departed, through the mercy of God rest in peace. Amen. Father Baker

TREASURES FORM OUR TRADITION Invitations, News, Thoughts and Prayers Page 4 With Thanksgiving approaching, we think of the quest of the Puritans who arrived on the Mayflower from their first exile in Leyden, Holland. Like the Catholics of England, they were religious dissenters who suffered penalties for not participating in the worship life of the established church. The Catholics established monasteries, schools, and convents on the continent to assure the vigor of their faith s intellectual and spiritual life. The Puritans fled to the tolerant Netherlands with similar hopes of preserving their way of life, but were unable to adapt to Dutch ways. There were Catholics who made a similar colonial journey. The hero of the story is George Calvert, Lord Baltimore, the former Secretary of State of Britain and a Catholic. He proposed that King Charles I establish a proprietary colony that he would own and rule, named Maryland in honor of the Catholic Queen Henrietta Maria. George Calvert died unexpectedly in the midst of this project, but his son Cecil faithfully carried out his father s wishes. Maryland became a symbol of freedom for wealthy recusant English families, as well as for the poor who held to the Catholic faith despite great hardship. From the start, the colony was open to Protestants and Catholics equally, and the seeds of the religious freedom so dear to the American spirit were sown with the first colonists in 1634. Rev. James Field, Copyright J. S. Paluch Co. EAGLE SCOUT PROJECT My name is Aaron Murphy and I am currently working on my Eagle Scout Project at St. Stephen of Hungary School where I will transform a room being used to store supplies into a Drama/Media Room. I am a Boy Scout of America who is current working on achieving the highest rank in Boy Scouts, Eagle Scout. To achieve Eagle Scout a Boy Scout must demonstrate leadership of others while performing a project for the benefit of his community. I plan on executing my project in December with the help of donations from St. Monica/St. Elizabeth of Hungary/St. Stephen of Hungary Church. With the donations that I hope to receive, I will purchase materials to make the room into something the school can use to further advance the children's love for drama. I thank Father Baker for allowing me to present this to you. Aaron will be presenting information about his project in the rear of the church this Sunday after the 10:30 and 12 Noon Mass. Your assistance would be greatly THANKSGIVING FOOD DRIVE It s time for Saint Monica s annual Thanksgiving Food Drive to benefit the Yorkville Common Pantry! Ongoing: K-8 Religious Ed, 10:15-11:45am, Parish Center, every Sunday Adult Faith Formation, 10:15-11:45am, Parish Center, every Sunday RCIA, 1:30-3:30pm, Parish Center, every Sunday Upcoming: November 13th, 2016 We still welcome volunteers for our Sunday morning programs. Teaching assistants, and greeters no prior experience needed, training provided, serve one to four Sundays a month. Contact Maryann for more information. There will be NO sessions for K-8 Religious Education, Adult Faith Formation, or RCIA on Sunday, November 27 Thanksgiving Weekend. Family Question of the Week: The Scriptures this weekend can be frightening, especially for children. But don t miss the messages of hope and redemption within the readings. A quote attributed to Fred Rogers (of Mr. Rogers Neighborhood ) is to, when bad things happen, always look for the helpers. Who are the people in our communities who are helpers when bad things happen? Can we do something to say thank you to them this week? Resource of the Week: Advent begins in two weeks! It s time to make plans. Will your family make or purchase an Advent Wreath to use at home? Will you make or purchase an Advent Calendar? Pick one or two things that your family can do to prepare spiritually for Christmas. If you missed our Family Faith Formation Day, you can stop by the parish center and pick up a few resources that we have left over. THANKSGIVING DINNER Yes, the annual St Monica/ St Elizabeth of Hungary/ St Stephen of Hungary Community Dinner will be held on Thursday, November 24th., and tickets are now available at the Parish Center Dinner will be served starting at 1:30 PM.
