AUGUST 6/7, 2016 ST. ANDREW R.C. CHURCH PAGE 2 THE THEME It s easy to put our faith on the back burner as we deal with life s demands. But today s Gospel is clear that we are always expected to be aware and prepared. Jesus usually shows up in our lives in unexpected ways and in unexpected people. We will only recognize these many opportunities if we re paying attention. We coast along at our own risk. Faith and readiness are lifelong attitudes, honed one careful day at a time. THE READINGS WISDOM 18:6-9: The Israelites long awaited freedom from oppression. HEBREWS 11:1-2,8-19: In praise of Abraham s faith. LUKE 12:32-48: Those who follow Jesus must be aware and prepared. -SCHEDULE OF EVENTS - SATURDAY, AUGUST 13th, 2016 5:00 PM Mass Priest Fr. Manuel Lector D. Carbone E.M C. Gallagher, F. McCarthy, V. AUGUST 6/7, 2016 ST. ANDREW R.C. CHURCH PAGE 3 From Fr. Manuel s Desk 19th Sunday in Ordinary Time Dear Parish Family: Our readings today remind us to have faith and trust in God while always being prepared to meet our maker. In our first reading from the Book of Wisdom, we hear about the tenth plague in Egypt, the killing of the firstborn as the Israelites celebrated their first Passover and the angel of death passed over the houses marked with the blood of the lamb. Trust in God s covenant leads the Israelites to wait on the Lord with certain knowledge that God would act on their behalf. In the Letter of the Hebrews, faith is defined as the realization of what is hoped for and evidence of things not seen. Abraham and Sarah were perfect examples of those who hoped and trusted in God, not knowing where it would lead, or how it would turn out. They trusted that faith in God would eventually lead to their eternal dwelling with him. Luke s Gospel also counsels us to trust and not be afraid for the Father is pleased to give you the kingdom. However, we are warned to be ever ready and vigilant, for we do not know the time or day when the master will return to hold us accountable. My dear friends, all of our readings remind us that to have faith and trust in God, we must be prepared to accept his will in our lives. We must strive to live a simple life, unattached to the goods of this world and striving always for heavenly treasure. Jesus reminds us that as his disciples more will be expected from us since more has been entrusted to us. The gift of faith is a precious one, but not without cost. The love that we are given is expected to be shared with others and our reward for such service will be great. Let us pray for the kindness of heart needed to live the life that Jesus calls us to live so that we are always prepared to meet our maker when he calls us. STEWARDSHIP Stewardship Reflection Am I waiting for the right time to become a good steward? Do I plan to share my time and talents later? Today s Gospel warns those who are procrastinating about stewardship to be prepared at an hour you do not expect, the Son of Man will come. Living Stewardship We are grateful this week for all stewards in our parish who recognize that giving and sharing are not a burden, but rather an opportunity to experience-everyday-the deep satisfaction that can only be found by serving in the name of Jesus.
