Lectures conducted at Bar-Ilan University, Ramat Gan Present Academic Activities My research field comprises contemporary Israeli society with the emphasis on Oriental society. 1. Social cultural and religious processes affecting oriental women. In resent years I have carried out two prolonged field research projects on the topic: Oriental Women. a. Lessons for women During a period of one year I regularly participated in Torah lessons for women. I recorded these lessons and later transcribed the material. The objective of this research is to examine several factors, namely: lesson contents, teaching

12 methods, and the social-cultural interaction between the participants. b. Newly religious Oriental Women - This phenomenon is called becoming stronger. I examining the motives for this phenomenon, the methods and conditions under which women become newly religious and the institutions intended for them, namely schools for their children, lessons for women, and supportive groups which are formed within these educational frameworks. 2. Research of the Shas education network. I am researching the education system s role in creating a cultural community, and the role of political education system. I am also planning research of vocational high schools for teenagers that have been established in recent years. 3. Research of Holy Men and the sainthood industry. The objective of this research is to examine how a modern Righteous Person evolves, and the social and cultural implications of the Religious Industry on the Oriental periphery. How religious entrepreneurs and the religious community are increasingly establishing themselves in modern Israeli society. 4. Over the last two years, I have been conducting a large study on Rabbi Ovadia Yosef s attitude to women. The study includes all the religious rulings concerning women in the ten volumes of his responsa series, Yabia Omer. On his attitude to the role of women in the three volumes of his series, Taharat Habayit. In his responsa regarding women which appear on the Halaha Yomit website a website written and edited by one of Rabbi Yosef s grandsons. And regarding what he said at public events and which were published in the party newspaper, Yom LeYom. 5. I am a member of the forum on ultra-orthodox society which takes place at the Jerusalem Institute for Israel Studies (JIIS). A member of the limited forum at the Center for the Study of Ultra-Orthodox Society, held at the JIIS.

13 6. I am carrying out a long-term study about young students belief in God. The study is being performed at Achva Academic College among Jewish and Arab students. The study attempts to examine how much young people in the State of Israel believe, and if changes are taking place over the years which will influence social, educational, and political processes in Israel. Additional Information Media I participate in mass media on current affairs as a specialist on the Shas Movement, Oriental ultra-orthodox society, and the Holy Men culture. I have also written articles in newspapers and on the internet about these issues. Giving to the community I give lectures in the army, police, to pensioners, and the students union, free of charge. *All items marked with an asterisk were carried out after receiving lecturer ranking (1 October 2004).
