PASTOR-LEE THOUGHTS Love is in the air. For many people this is the month of love. February 14 th is St. Valentine s Day the day people express their love for their spouse and other relatives. Cupids, arrows, hearts, chocolate, cards, and other things are associated with this special day. Our Deacons are having a Valentine s Day card exchange to celebrate this day. There are different thoughts regarding St. Valentine. Valentinus was martyred in the 3 rd century A.D. for his Christian beliefs. There are conflicting reports as to why he was executed whether it was his stance on Christian marriage or some other Christian-related doctrine or belief. Regardless of the background of this holiday it still is a day we celebrate the love we have for others. This love is best expressed in the love that God has for us. The Apostle John is known for using the word ἀγάπη (agape) the Greek word for God s unconditional love for us and the love Christians are to show to others in his writings. He refers to himself as the disciple whom Jesus loved and used the word love more than 40 times in 1 John alone. He also gives us probably the most familiar verse in the New Testament when he quoted Jesus by writing: For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him may not perish but may have eternal life. (John 3:16 NRSV) Throughout this month of love let us focus on the love God has for each of us. This love is so intense that God sent His Son to die for our sins. This is the basis for our faith let us rejoice and be glad in it and express that love to all we meet. In His Service, Pastor Lee FIRST FILIPINO-AMERICAN CHURCH TO NEST AT HPC The Session of Henderson Presbyterian Church has been contacted by the First Filipino- American Presbyterian Church of Southern Nevada (FFAPC) about their moving to HPC from Green Valley Presbyterian Church where they have resided since their inception. There are lots of possibilities of having FFAPC move to HPC. Among these are: Joint Worship Services for special occasions (Maundy Thursday, Christmas Eve, etc.), Youth activities to be held together, Special activities where both churches would participate (HPC Movie Nights, occasional dinners, game nights, etc.). And the list can go on We look forward to a wonderful experience of nesting a fellow church. More information will follow as we continue communicating with the staff and Session of the Filipino church. 3

Originally established in 1885 in recognition of President George Washington, it is still officially called Washington s Birthday by the federal government. Traditionally celebrated on February 22 Washington s actual day of birth the holiday became popularly known as Presidents Day after it was moved as part of 1971 s Uniform Monday Holiday Act, an attempt to create more three-day weekends for the nation s workers. While several states still have individual holidays honoring the birthdays of Washington, Abraham Lincoln and other figures, Presidents Day is now popularly viewed as a day to celebrate all U.S. presidents past and present.
