To Jesus through Mary May Focus Glorious Mysteries May Virtue of the Month Devotion TO JESUS THROUGH MARY The month of May will conclude our focus on the diocesan theme To Jesus through Mary with a focus on the virtue of devotion. Devotion has a number of synonyms, but the one that may best describe it is the term loyalty. To devote oneself to a person or to a cause is a commitment of remaining loyal. It is returning to the person or cause regularly to deepen relationships or understanding. The month of May serves as a good teacher of devotion as we center our attention throughout the month on the Blessed Mother, celebrate the feast of St. Joseph the Worker at the beginning of the month, and remember our own mothers on Mother s Day. Could one find better definitions of devotion than Mary, Joseph, and our own mothers? This week, let us think about our devotion to the people around us. How do we demonstrate our loyalty with them? IN SUPPORT OF WORKERS From The Diocese of Wilmington Principals Notes Rerum Novarum is an encyclical issued by Pope Leo XIII on 15 May 1891. It was an open letter that addressed the condition of the working classes. It discussed the relationships and mutual duties between labor and capital, as well as government and its citizens. Of primary concern was the need for some amelioration of "The misery and wretchedness pressing so unjustly on the majority of the working class." It supported the rights of labor to form unions, rejected socialism and unrestricted capitalism, while affirming the right to private property. Rerum Novarum is considered a foundational text of modern Catholic social teaching. Catholic social teaching refers to the Catholic doctrines on matters of human dignity and common good in society. The seven principles of Catholic social teaching provide the manner in which Catholics strive to live individually and collectively in the world today..
