PREPARING FOR THE SACRAMENT OF CONFIRMATION YEAR ii Our Lady of Sorrows - St. Anthony Parish Office of Religious Education Hamilton, New Jersey

We hope the information contained in the booklet will help you in this process. Please review the enclosed information providing the few final steps each candidate will take toward the reception of the Holy Spirit: Catechism on the Holy Spirit & Confirmation Application for Reception Orientation meeting for Parents and Candidates Parish interviews The Retreat Experience Penance service Details to Know for the Celebration Calendar of Events The Resources for Christian Living (RCL) Confirmation book serves as our foundational text. Confirmation is designed that young people might experience God by reflecting on eight aspects of the Confirmation Rite. Each session is designed to assist them in becoming active disciples of Christ. Parents should review the activities for the families in the attachment or visit the web site www.faithfirst.com. The parish catechetical staff of our parish is honored to be your co-worker in this process. We hope the information provided herein is a step in this direction. Sincerely, Mariyam Francis Director, Religious Education Program Msgr. Thomas Gervasio Pastor Page 2

A Catechism on the Holy Spirit & Confirmation What is Confirmation? Confirmation is one of the three Sacraments of Initiation: the others are Baptism and the Holy Eucharist. These sacraments make us part of or more fully part of Christ s Church. In Confirmation the Holy Spirit comes to us in a special way to strengthen us Confirmation means strengthening to increase and deepen the grace of our Baptism so that we might spread and defend the Faith by word and deed. This is done visibly through the laying on of hands and anointing. Who is the minister of Confirmation? The Bishop, successor of the apostles and shepherd of the diocese, is the ordinary minister of the sacrament but he may delegate a priest to confirm. What is the essential rite of Confirmation? The essential rite is the anointing with Sacred Chrism (oil mixed with balsam and consecrated by the bishop), which is done by the laying on of the hand of the minister who says: Be sealed with the gift of the Holy Spirit. This seal (mark) lasts forever and is called a character. Who may be confirmed? Only those already baptized can and should receive this sacrament, which can be received only once. To receive it efficaciously (powerfully) one must be in the state of grace. What is a Confirmation Sponsor? A candidate chooses one sponsor. He or she has the same duties as a baptismal godparent. The sponsor is a model of faithful Catholic life and sees that the confirmed person acts as a true witness to Christ and is faithful to all that is involved in living a Catholic life. What are the qualifications of a sponsor? A person chosen to be a sponsor: Must lead a life in harmony with the Catholic faith Must be a Catholic who has been confirmed and received the Holy Eucharist. Must be at least 16 years of age (however the pastor may make an exception to this provided the sponsor meets the other qualifications). Must be in a valid Catholic marriage (if married). Cannot be the parent of the candidate. Does not have to be of the same sex as the candidate. May be the baptismal sponsor of the candidate (This is not only permissible but desirable.) Page 3

What if a chosen sponsor cannot attend Confirmation? It happens that a sponsor may not be able to attend the actual celebration of Confirmation. In such a case, the candidate may select a proxy to stand in for the sponsor. What is a sponsor letter or certificate of eligibility? This is a statement that is submitted to the parish by the person selected to be sponsor indicating that he or she meets all the qualifications to assume this role. The would-be sponsor obtains this from the Catholic Church he or she regularly attends. Why should one be confirmed? Without Confirmation Christian initiation is incomplete. The Sacraments of Initiation Baptism, Confirmation, and Eucharist bring us into full membership in the Church. One should also be confirmed in order to receive the graces that the sacrament brings. Can we get to heaven if we are not confirmed? Confirmation is neither a requirement nor a guarantee of getting to heaven. Going to heaven is the faithful completion of a Christian journey involving prayer, worship and life choices. The sacraments strengthen a Catholic on this journey. Does a Catholic have to be confirmed to be married? The Code of Canon Law (#1065) states that Catholics who have not yet received the Sacrament of Confirmation are to receive it before being admitted to marriage, if this can be done without grave inconvenience. Do we have to attend Church regularly to be confirmed? It would be quite puzzling for someone to prepare for Confirmation while not participating in the life of the Church. Such an attitude or practice is in total contradiction to the meaning of Confirmation. Catholics are obliged to participate in the Eucharist on Sundays and holydays of obligation, unless excused for a serious reason (illness, care of infants) or dispensed by the pastor. Those who deliberately fail in this obligation commit a grave sin. CCC#2181 Must one choose a Confirmation Name? It is no longer required to have a confirmation name different from the one given at Baptism. Candidates may choose a new name if they wish. It gives the confirmed another patron saint to imitate and to call upon in prayer. What happens if classes are missed? Participation in all classes is expected. If a candidate misses a class due to illness, please contact the Office of Religious Education to arrange a make-up session. Page 4

Gift of the Holy Spirit Wisdom Understanding Courage Counsel Knowledge Reverence Wonder and Awe in God s Presence Description Helps us to love spiritual things, to put God in the first place in our lives, and to look at everything either as a help or an obstacle to reaching heaven. Helps us to see more deeply into the truths we already believe by faith Sometimes called fortitude helps us to be brave and patient in overcoming difficulties and carrying out our duties Sometimes called right judgment helps us to choose what is right even in difficulties Helps us to know God and what He expects of us it also helps us to be guided rightly in our spiritual life Often called piety shows us how to offer due worship and service to God; it also shows us how, for the love of God to help those who are in trouble Sometimes called Fear of the Lord helps us to respect god and to want to please Him in everything Fruits of the Holy Spirit A fruit is an evidence or result of an action. Fruits of the Holy Spirit then are the signs of the Holy Spirit active in our life. St. Paul lists them (Gal 5:22-23) Charity Joy Peace Patience Kindness Goodness Generosity Gentleness Faithfulness Modesty Self-Control Chastity Works of Mercy The Corporal The Spiritual Feed the hungry Counsel the doubtful Give drink to the thirsty Instruct the ignorant Clothe the naked Admonish the sinner Shelter the homeless Comfort the afflicted Visit the sick Forgive offences Visit the imprisoned Bear wrongs patiently Bury the dead Pray for the living & dead Page 5

POINTS FOR REFLECTION ON THE JOURNEY TO CONFIRMATION For Parents: The Primary Teachers of Faith Nurture your child s faith through weekly Mass, Confession, and family prayer. Encourage your child to reflect and pray on the decision to be confirmed. Participate fully in the various aspects of the parish program of preparation. Facilitate and promote the works of service. These opportunities allow your child to see that one s entire Catholic life should be one of service and charity. Foster religious formation beyond Confirmation through parish involvement (e.g. Youth Group, Catechist Aide, cantor, or choir. For Sponsors: The Models of Faith Be a living model of faith. Part of what the candidate admires in you is your faith! If the practice your faith is not what it should be, "get it together," so to speak! It would be a contradiction to accept the role of sponsor if you do not live a sacramental life within the Church. Pray for your candidate and yourself. In addition to your prayer for one another, do spiritual things together e.g. Mass & Confession. Give of your time and share your gifts. Work on various activities together, e.g. Reviewing lessons, prayers, or service projects. Share your own experiences. Write an encouraging letter. Offer a gift of spiritual significance. Page 6

Don't miss the Confirmation Liturgy. Participating in the liturgy is the easiest part of being a sponsor. You will place your hand on the candidate's shoulder, standing just behind him/her before the bishop. Don't forget the newly confirmed Catholic. Remember the confirmed s birthday, name day, and/or Confirmation anniversary. Send a card or make a phone call. Continue to worship together, or carry out a work of charity. For Candidates: Preparing to Receive the Holy Spirit As you prepare for the Sacrament, reflect on these questions: Am I freely choosing to be confirmed? Am I in a state of grace or am I aware of serious sin in my life? Do I know what a Catholic believes? Have I participated in all the activities of the Confirmation program? In what ways do I practice my faith each day? Do I attend Mass on Sundays and Holydays of Obligation? If not, what can I do to change this? Do I appreciate and make a regular Confession? In what ways can I continue the study of my faith after Confirmation? Have I put forth my best effort in preparing for this sacrament? Page 7

THE INTERVIEW An interview appointment will be arranged to meet with a priest, deacon, or catechist. Please keep in mind that the interview is not a test. There is no pass or fail grade given. It might well be called a 15 minute Confirmation Chat. The interviewer and candidate will discuss what has been learned over the course of the year and what it means to receive the Gift of the Holy Spirit in Confirmation. Under separate cover, the candidate will receive an interview preparation guide. A parent or sponsor must accompany the candidate and observe the interview. In addition to the preparation note the following: Dress appropriately and be prompt Enter by Our Lady of Sorrows School: Door 3 (left of trailer) Upon arrival register at the desk (outside gym entrance 2 nd floor) Please relax for the interview you will be called by interviewer Socializing afterward is difficult. In the interest of good order and respect for interviews taking place, we would appreciate making your way home directly after interview Page 8
