Wednesday 9th January 2019 Living and practising truth is drinking of the Saviour's cup The Bible 1. Ps. 16:1-3, 5-9, 11 PRESERVE me, O God: for in thee do I put my trust. O mysoul, thou hast said unto the LORD, Thou art my Lord: my goodness extendeth not to thee; But to the saints that are in the earth, and to the excellent, in whom is all my delight.... The LORD is the portion of mine inheritance and of my cup: thou maintainest my lot. The lines are fallen unto me in pleasant places; yea, I have a goodly heritage. I will bless thelord, who hath given me counsel: my reins also instruct me in the night seasons. I have set the LORD always before me: because he is at my right hand, I shall not be moved. Therefore my heart is glad, and my glory rejoiceth: my flesh also shall rest in hope.... Thou wilt shew me the path of life: in thy presence is fulness of joy; at thy right handthere are pleasures for evermore. 2. Matt. 4:17 Jesus Jesus began to preach, and to say, Repent: for the kingdom of heaven is at hand. 3. Matt. 10:1, 5 7, 40 42 AND when he had called unto him his twelve disciples, he gave them power against unclean spirits, to cast them out, and to heal all manner of sickness and all manner of disease.... These twelve Jesus sent forth, and
commanded them, saying, Go not into the way of the Gentiles, and intoany city of the Samaritans enter ye not. But go rather to the lost sheep of the house of Israel. And as ye go, preach, saying, The kingdom of heaven is at hand.... He that receiveth you receiveth me, and he that receiveth me receiveth him that sent me. He that receiveth a prophet in the name of a prophet shall receive a prophet's reward; and he that receiveth a righteous man in the name of a righteous man shall receive a righteous man's reward. And whosoever shall give to drink unto one of these little ones a cup of cold water only in the name of a disciple, verily I say unto you, he shall in no wise lose his reward. 4. Mark 10:35 40 And James and John, the sons of Zebedee, come unto him, saying, Master, we would that thou shouldest do for us whatsoever we shall desire. And he said unto them, What would ye that I should do for you? They said unto him, Grant unto us that we may sit, one on thy right hand, and the other on thy left hand, in thy glory. But Jesus said unto them, Ye know not what ye ask: can ye drink of the cup that I drink of? and be baptized with the baptism that I am baptized with? And they said unto him, We can. And Jesus said unto them, Ye shall indeed drink of the cup that I drink of; and with the baptism that I am baptized withal shall ye be baptized: But to sit on my right hand and on my left hand is not mine to give; but it shall be given to them for whom it is prepared. 5. I Cor. 10:1 4 brethren, 14 my, 15, 21, 24, 31 brethren, I would not that ye should be ignorant, how that all our fathers were under the cloud, and all passed through the sea; And were all baptized unto Moses in the cloud and in the sea; And did all eat the same spiritual meat; And did all drink the same spiritual drink: for they drank of that spiritual Rock that followed them: and that Rock was Christ.... my dearly beloved, flee from idolatry. I speak as to wise men; judge ye what I say....
Ye cannot drink the cup of the Lord, and the cup of devils: ye cannot be partakers of the Lord's table, and of the table of devils.... Let no man seek his own, but every man another's wealth.... Whether therefore ye eat, or drink, or whatsoever ye do, do all to the glory of God. 6. Ps. 37:34 36 Wait on the LORD, and keep his way, and he shall exalt thee to inherit the land: when the wicked are cut off, thou shalt see it. I have seen the wicked in great power, and spreading himself like a green bay tree. Yet he passed away, and, lo, hewas not: yea, I sought him, but he could not be found. Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures 1. SH 5:14 Saints and sinners get their full award, but not always in this world. The followers of Christ drank his cup. Ingratitude and persecution filled it to the brim; but God pours the riches of His love into the understanding and affections, giving us strength according to our day. Sinners flourish like a green bay tree; but, looking farther, the Psalmist could see their end, the destruction of sin through suffering. 2. SH 10:6 If good enough to profit by Jesus' cup of earthly sorrows, God will sustain us under these sorrows. Until we are thus divinely qualified and are willing to drink his cup, millions of vain repetitions will never pour into prayer the unction of Spirit in demonstration of power and with signs following. Christian Science reveals a necessity for overcoming the world, the flesh, and evil, and thus destroying all error.
3. SH 31:4 6, 8 13, 22-28 Jesus acknowledged no ties of the flesh. He said: Call no man your father upon the earth: for one is your Father, which is in heaven.... We have no record of his calling any man by the name of father. He recognized Spirit, God, as the only creator, and therefore as the Father of all. First in the list of Christian duties, he taught his followers the healing power of Truth and Love.... For what says Paul? As often as ye eat this bread, and drink this cup, ye do show the Lord's death till he come. Referring to the materiality of the age, Jesus said: The hour cometh, and now is, when the true worshippers shall worship the Father in spirit and in truth. Painful prospect 4. SH 33:27-31 Christians, are you drinking his cup? Have you shared the blood of the New Covenant, the persecutions which attend a new and higher understanding of God? If not, can you then say that you have commemorated Incisive questions Jesus in his cup? 5. SH 35:19 25 2nd Our, 30 (only) Our church is built on the divine Principle, Love. We can unite with this church only as we are new-born of Spirit, as we reach the Life which is Truth and the Truth which is Life by bringing forth the fruits Spiritual Eucharist of Love, casting out error and healing the sick.... The design of Love is to reform the sinner. 6. SH 52:29 The accusations of the Pharisees were as self-contradictory as their religion. The bigot, the debauchee, the hypocrite, called Jesus a glutton and a wine-bibber. They said: He casteth out devils through Defamatory accusations Beelzebub, and is the friend of publicans and sinners. The latter accusation was true, but not in their meaning. Jesus was no
ascetic. He did not fast as did the Baptist's disciples; yet there never lived a man so far removed from appetites and passions as the Nazarene. He rebuked sinners pointedly and unflinchingly, because he was their friend; hence the cup he drank. 7. SH 54:21 5 His earthly cup of bitterness was drained to the dregs. There adhered to him only a few unpretentious friends, whose religion was something more than a name. It was so vital, that it enabled them to understand Spiritual friendship the Nazarene and to share the glory of eternal life. He said that those who followed him should drink of his cup, and history has confirmed the prediction. If that Godlike and glorified man were physically on earth to-day, would not some, who now profess to love him, reject him? Would they not deny him even the rights of humanity, if he Injustice to the Saviour entertained any other sense of being and religion than theirs? The advancing century, from a deadened sense of the invisible God, to-day subjects to unchristian comment and usage the idea of Christian healing enjoined by Jesus; but this does not affect the invincible facts. 8. SH 66:30 Sorrow has its reward. It never leaves us where it found us. The furnace separates the gold from the dross that the precious metal may be graven with the image of God. The cup our Father hath given, shall we not drink it and learn the lessons He teaches? The gold and dross 9. SH 317:11 These blessed benedictions rest upon Jesus' followers: If the world hate you, ye know that it hated me before it hated you; Lo, I am with you alway, that is, not only in all time, but inall ways and conditions.
10. SH 317:6-8 Whosoever lives most the life of Jesus in this age and declares best the power of Christian Science, will drink of his Master's cup. Hymn. 131:1-3 I am the way, the truth, the life, / Our blessed Master said; / And whoso to the Father comes, / Must in my pathway tread: / / A way that is not hedged with forms; / A truth, too large for creeds; / A life, indwelling, deep and broad, / That meets the heart's great needs. / / To point that living way, to speak / The truth that makes men free, / To bring that quick'ning life from heaven, / Is highest ministry. / / Hymn. 70:1-3 God giveth light to all / Who ask with prayer sincere; / He doth not fail to hear that call; / His Truth is ever near. / / Plain shall His guidance be, / If thou but seek the right; / Clearly thy pathway thou shalt see, / A line of purest light. / / God is thy light and health; / No death nor darkness there; / Turn but to Him, accept His wealth, / And all His glory share. / / Hymn. 251:1-2 O Word of God, most holy, / O wisdom from on high, / O Truth, unchanged, unchanging, / O light of earth's dark sky, / We bless Thee for the radiance / That from the hallowed page, / A lantern to our footsteps, / Shines on from age to age. / / O Word of God the Father, / Thou art the gift divine, / And still thy light is lifted, / O'er all the lands to shine. / It is the chart and compass / To guide us to our Lord; / It is the heaven-drawn picture / Of Christ, the living Word. / /
