Third Sunday in Ordinary Time Go, eat rich foods and drink sweet drinks, and allot portions to those who had nothing prepared (Nehemiah 8:10) Ezra s instructions to the people show us that God does not forbid us from enjoying the good things in life. In 2017, 6,790 Missouri women had abortions which is a 41% drop in 10 years. In 1980, there were at least 10 "From the Eucharist comes strength to live the Christian life and zeal to share that life with others." -St. Pope John Paul II The hours needed to be filled are Tuesday 1am & 2am/ Tuesday 12 noon to share the hour with someone) and Thursday 1am. FINANCIAL STEWARDSHIP: At the end of September and beginning of October, we focused on the activities to which we pledged our time and talent in the Fall s renewal. At that time, we prayed about and discerned which activities we were going to commit to doing this now-current activity year. At that time, I mentioned that we would focus more specifically on our financial pledges after the first of the new year, 2019. Well, that time is now. By the time you read these words, you will have heard our homilies about Stewardship of Treasure as well as a lay witness given by our parishioner Ann Ficken on this topic. Next weekend, we will conduct a Covenant Sunday as we did on October 7, giving us all the opportunity to express and personally commit ourselves to God and our parish though our financial gifts for this new year. Before next weekend, please take some time to think about the thoughts that I share below. They come from Stewardship: Faithful and Generous published by the Archdiocese s Office of Stewardship: God and money are top priorities for many people. God knows this, and fortunately we are given direction in the Old Testament and the New Testament on giving money, for example: You cannot serve two masters. He will hate one and love the other. You cannot serve God and mammon (wealth). Matthew 6:25 In gratitude, we are called to give from our first fruits ; we are called to give our best to God and not leftovers. Giving money is a pillar of our faith, just like celebrating Mass on Sunday and participating in parish ministry. Being generous with our money actually frees us from being a slave to money, from making money a god. Giving money is sacrificial. We deny ourselves for the benefit of someone else, maybe someone we don t like, someone we don t know or someone that doesn t look like us. The invitation to give money is another opportunity to participate in the vision and mission of our parish. Until the needy are clothed, the hungry are fed, and the Gospel is spread to the ends of the earth, the Church will need financial resources to support its mission. We will always be called to give, that is a constant. How we respond (gratitude, joy, or anger) is the fruit of our faith. THESE CHARTS: I hope that these diagrams help us all to think about the level of our giving and to consider how well that giving reflects the level of God s own giving to us. The one to the right shows the giving level of our St. Cletus parishioners last year. The ones below are to assist us in making our commitments this year.

Monthly Ladies Evening of Recollection Recollections offer a respite from daily distractions and activities to reflect on your everyday life in the light of basic Christian principles. These quiet evenings aim to help you refresh your spirit, strengthen your personal relationship with God and transform your ordinary work and life into a path to holiness. The evening consists of a practical talk about living our faith, two guided meditations given by priests of Opus Dei in the presence of the Blessed Sacrament, ending in Benediction. Quiet times between meditations offer a chance for spiritual reading/rosary and confession, etc. Join us for the next recollection, Wednesday February 6 at St Cletus Church beginning at 7:30-9:30. For more information, please contact Mary Schlueter 314-517-1277 or Maureen Branson 314-322-9711. Singles Again is a support group for separated, divorced and widowed people. January 27, 2019 A Sister Parish Opportunity You re Invited!!! Our Lady of Guadalupe s Celebra on of Día de Candelaria Saturday, February 2nd at 5:00 pm The Día de la Candelaria (Candlemas Day) is a big feast in Mexico. It differs from the Candle Mass in the United States, for not only do candles get blessed but the baby Jesus from your nativity set is presented and receives a blessing. Día de la Candelaria is celebrated on February 2nd, falling 40 days after Christmas. According to Jewish law it was customary to bring a newborn baby to the temple. On this day custom dictates that a family Nativity scene is put away with a party by the person who got the Baby Jesus in his/her piece of bread during the Three Kings celebration. This person also presents the baby Jesus with a new christening gown for the Candelaria blessing. A party follows the ceremony. Men aged 18-40: Have you ever considered the possibility of becoming a priest?
