Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church The Presentation of the Lord February 2 The child s father and mother were amazed at what was said about him; and Simeon blessed them and said to Mary his mother, Behold, this child is destined for the fall and rise of many in Israel. Luke 2:34 This striking stained glass window is located in our worship space, on the tabernacle side. It depicts Simeon in the temple holding the Christ Child in his arms as he prophesies the sacrifice. Note the two turtle doves, and the seven swords of sorrow that would pierce Mary s heart. Mary stands below, the Mother of Sorrows. Rest in Peace We extend our prayers and sympathy to Ron and Susan Hardesty on the death of Ron s father, Richard Hardesty; and to Debbie Parker on the death of her sister, Deanna Badgett. Gospel Reflection How do I know if the Time, Talent, and Treasure I offer to God in grateful return is enough? What is the measure? St. Paul tells us that the measure is the love that we put into each of these aspects of our lives. If I have all faith so as to move mountains, but do not have love, I am nothing. If I give away everything I own and hand my body over so that I may boast but do not have love, I gain nothing. God is not after a particular number. What He wants us to give over to Him is our very selves. Real love is not a sentiment. Real love is manifested in living a virtuous life. We read later in St. Paul s letter that real love takes strength: it is patient, kind, humble, othercentered, truth-seeking, and long-suffering. Love is the heroic giving of oneself even when it is uncomfortable; especially then. Love looks like Jesus. It lives like Jesus. Sometimes, living like Jesus is difficult. We see this in the Gospel today, where we find Jesus in action, preaching in the synagogue in His hometown. He speaks truth to the people He loves, the ones He grew up with and shared His early days with. How do they respond? They are filled with fury and run Him out of town, intent on throwing Him from a cliff! Yet Jesus is undeterred. He passes right through them and presses forward with the mission His Father has entrusted to Him. We are called to live with this same strength and determination, fueled by the power of love and by gratitude for all God has given us. Summarization from Catholic Stewardship Consultants, Inc. 2018 Stewardship Intentions Our records indicate that 51% of parish households have returned Stewardship Intention Cards for 2019. Thank you! Stewardship commitments are among the most meaningful ways that we can offer thanks to God as we commit to sharing time, talent, and treasure from the many gifts we have been given. We cannot remain a full stewardship parish if 49% of our parish households do not respond to the stewardship call. If you have not submitted your 2019 Stewardship Intentions, please respond now. The return of your Intention Card also renews your membership in the parish. Intention Cards may be found on the parish website, in the Atrium, or at the Parish Office. Contact the office with questions, 896.0241. Stewardship Reflection Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, before you were born I dedicated you, a prophet to the nations I appointed you. ~Jeremiah 1:5 We are all called to make a difference in the world. It is not jealous, it is not pompous (1 Corinthians 13:4) Which of these qualities is your spouse strongest in? Parenting Pointers Before I formed you in the womb I knew you. (Jeremiah 1:4) Even before your child was born you had hopes for him or her. Even before you conceived, you had hopes. Even if you adopted your child, you wondered how this person would grow and change you. Ponder how God knows you and your child even more deeply than the surface knowledge you now have.
