August 2011 Vol. XXI, No. 8 A community of Spirit. A fellowship of Joy! 325 SW 6th Avenue, Milton-Freewater, OR 97862-1069 541.938.5889 The Triangle gets it s finishing touches as we prepare for our 50th!

Pastor s Pitch August 2011 Vol. XXI, No. 8 Page 2 We are richly blessed as a congregation. The Spirit of Love is strong in our lives. We truly are a Community as opposed to a group of disjointed people who gather for worship. As I talk with other pastors and not the trends of our modern society it is clear to me that while we may view ourselves as ordinary or church here is anything BUT that! The words of a young Pastor named Dave Brauer-Rieke, from his first pastor s report to the congregation in January of 1989. I have to say that at that time I was in the middle of my senior year of High School, and very much looking forward to graduating. There was a song that was very popular at the time titled, My Future s so bright I gotta wear shades! I took that song to heart as I drove around wearing my Ray-Ban sunglasses and generally trying to look cool. You know how it is; it is all about the image! Unfortunately deep down inside I was not so sure about my future, I knew that I was going to go to college (at least community college,) but I had some real questions about what I wanted to do with the rest of my life. Over the past few months I have been taking little snippets of our history here at Christ the King and incorporating them into my Pastor s Pitch, hoping to bridge the time span of the last fifty years of ministry. I firmly believe that we need to know who we were and where we have come from in order to know who we are now and where we are going. It s a little cliché but it is true. So who are we? We are Christ the King Lutheran C h u r c h o f M i l t o n - Freewater; we are a community that is grounded on our worship of God. We are brought together through the good news of Jesus Christ, to know that we are beloved children of God. We are strengthened through the Holy Spirit to live a life of faith, renewed each day to be who God has called us to be. As Dave said, we are not a disjointed people, but we are bound to each other in faith and love. In that we are extraordinary! Next month we will celebrate our anniversary, we will laugh, maybe even shed a tear, we will tell stories and hear about times maybe we have forgotten, or maybe were not around to take part of, but we do it together as always! My life has taken some turns that I never expected and I am the better for that journey. The life of this congregation has taken some turns that no one ever expected and we are the better for that journey as well. Now is the time to start to look forward however and see what God has planned for the next fifty years! Peace to you! Pastor JJ

Announcements August 2010 Vol. XXI, No. 8 Page 4 Women s Luncheon The women s luncheon group would like to extend an invitation to all women of the church to join them for lunch and fellowship. Last month the group went to Sterling s Restaurant, the old Elmer s Restaurant, in Walla Walla. Twelve women attended and had a great time. The next luncheon will be in September. They meet on the 3rd Wednesday at 11:30 a.m. Every month a new meeting place is chosen. Betty Schubert (938-6855 and LaVonne Hansen (938-0609) head this group up. They would love to have you join them. Give one of them a call for more information and where the next meeting place will be. A little girl was diligently pounding away on her father s typewriter. She told him she was writing a story. What s it about? he asked. I don t know, she replied. I can t read. Many of our pioneer ancestors learned to read by using the Bible- often the only book they had. Today we have our own libraries full of books, but the good book is still the best reading for our souls, our minds, and our lives. August 2011 Vol. XXI, No. 8 Page 6 Events Camp Lutherhaven August 7th is annual Wear your shorts to Church Day! Rummage Sale set for August 19th and 20th. The weekend of Muddy Frogwater Festival we will be holding a Rummage sale at the Parsonage; all proceeds will go toward the expenses of the youth trip to New Orleans next year for the National Youth Gathering in July of 2012. Camp Lutherhaven here we come! It is that time of year again, time to head up to Camp Lutherhaven on the shores of Lake Coeur d Alene. Pastor JJ and 11 other campers and two more adults will head up north for a great week of outside, play, food and friends! There might even be a little bible story thrown in from time to time! Please pray for good weather, safe travels, and a great time as these kids head to camp. For those of you who are going to camp meet here at church Sunday the 7th at 9:00 so we can load up the vehicles and get ready to go before church. Remember to have a sack lunch so that we can stop on the way for a bite to eat! Talk to Pastor JJ if you have any questions. The sale will be from 8:00 am to 4:00 pm on Friday and Saturday and we are looking for helpers for those two days, talk to Heather Dygert if you can help out in any way! Donations for the sale can be brought into the Sunday School Room at any time, or talk to Pastor JJ to schedule a pick up of items that you would like to donate. The rains ended, and Noah told the animals to go forth and multiply. All the animals obeyed, except for two snakes who were hiding in a corner: Didn t you hear me say to go forth and multiply? Noah asked them. They looked up at him woefully and replied, We can t, we re adders! Sometimes our lives get so demanding and hectic that we can t focus on what others are saying to us. We probably seem a little dense! And if we are having trouble communicating with our own families and friends, we might find it especially difficult to hear God s voice. Dear God, let me appreciate the gift of silence. Be with me as I try to take time each day to listen to what you are saying to me.
