ATLANTA EMORY DISTRICT NEWSLETTER SEPTEMBER, 2012 Notes from the District Superintendent A Word from Dana Greetings! I have been accused of being obsessive compulsive; I have come to take that as a compliment. It takes a bit of OCD to be a District Superintendent. I hope it keeps me working hard to be organized and in order. It does drive me to plan as well, to plan early so that any issue that arises might have time to be addressed. I invited the District Lay Leadership Development & Nominations Team to begin the planning of our exciting day of training in January 2013 several months ago. I am so proud of Rev. Terri Hoye who has taken the lead and began to develop our plans with a great team of lay people and clergy. January 13, 2013 at 2:00 pm to 5:00 pm at Snellville First UMC we will gather with our friends from the Atlanta Decatur Oxford District to be lifted up and encouraged by the Rev. Dr. Bob Farr, Director for Congregational Excellence from the Missouri Annual Conference. Bob is also the author of the book Renovate or Die which articulates his vision and the processes he use to implement church turnaround. This book is part 2 of Bishop Robert Schnase s book Five Practices of Fruitful Congregations. Bob will be sharing with our gathered community in worship and then he will be meeting with the Lay Leaders and other laity to hopefully offer encouragement to you and give you the power to renovate your church for Jesus Christ. This will be a great day, I promise you. I want every church to do all they can to have as many people present on January 13 at Snellville to take a step forward in renovating our district to be fruitful congregations in the New Year. Please do all you can as laity to encourage your friends and co-workers in the church to be present. Thanks for caring about the Church and its future. Dana

Mission Trips & Projects Page 2 NORTH GEORGIA CONFERENCE BRIDGE Mission Partnership: PORTUGAL - October 10 16 2012 With Dana Everhart and others from North Georgia We will travel on the 10th and 16th of October with 5 days on the ground in the country of Portugal. Our task is to build a bridge with the Methodist Church in Portugal so that together we can witness to our brothers and sisters in ways that will be life changing for years to come. For more information contact Mike Selleck mselleck@ngumc.org (SPACE IS LIMITED) The cost is $2,000 per person. Hurricane Isaac: Dominican Republic: UMVIM was contacted when it was first hitting and they received lots of rain, but we have not had contact since. Haiti: UMVIM heard yesterday from Tom Vencuss that were without internet for a few days and that they do not know of any immediate news. Bahamas: Abe McIntyre indicated that they received rain but no damage. Cuba: Aldo Gonzalez, Cuba National Coordinator has not yet heard from Bishop Pereira in Cuba as to any reports of damage. United States: We are currently watching while it hovers over Louisiana and Mississippi and we will follow the protocol determined by the meeting following the 2012 SEJ Disaster Academy. UMCOR and UMVIM agreed upon this system-- that being that when UMVIM is contacted for volunteers, we will contact the Conference UMVIM Coordinators and Jurisdictional Coordinators as directed by the affected Annual Conference(s). We do not send volunteers unless we have been asked. Once Isaac moves out, assessments will be made by the respective Annual Conference(s) and they will determine if they need volunteers. We are using our Facebook and Twitter accounts to share updates, prayers and stories as we are notified. We are following the UMC Conversations blog for stories- that blog can be found here: http://www.umcconversations.org/.
