Our classes are taught over several weeks to systematically introduce postures and develop strength and flexibility. Yoga 1: Beginning Level Begin (or build) your training with a balanced program of yoga stretches and postures that are accessible to almost any ability level. Yoga 2: Continuing Level Enhancements to basic postures are introduced. Various breathing exercises, subtler relaxation methods, and deeper meditation skills are developed. Yoga 3: Experienced Level Practice new and more challenging postures to build endurance, strength and flexibility. Explore pranayama and breathing exercises to increase energy and focus the mind. ^ Yoga for Core Strength and Meditation Designed to help develop progressive core strength, this class includes core muscle-isolation exercises interwoven within a classical asana sequence. Prerequisite: 6 months prior experience with Yoga 1 or greater. ^ Gentle Yoga Mild stretches and movements that work to improve range of motion and ease joint pain or stiffness. Portions of this class may be done using a chair. The poses are challenging only because they are held for several minutes as you bring awareness deep into your body. This quieting practice inspires focus and inner calm, and is complementary to the more active asana styles. This is an all-level class. Join your fellow seekers for an evening of gentle asana, relaxation and silent meditation. Tonight, we will be practicing the Gayatri Mantra, devotion to the eternal light. Learn the basics: a comfortable sitting posture, diaphragmatic breathing, relaxation methods, and essential concentration techniques used in the yoga tradition. Fee: $48 (ID: S66) Spiritual Study and Practice Group for Women Thursday, Sept. 7, 7-8:30 pm Join us on our year-long study of Awakening Shakti, The Transformative Power of the Goddesses of Yoga by Sally Kempton (available in the bookstore). Awakening Shakti provides a practical guide for activating the currents of the divine feminine in every aspect of your life. We will discuss Chapter 7. Fee $5 (ID: S67) THERAPEUTIC YOGA: Tension Relief for Neck & Shoulders with Stephanie Fridays, Sept. 8-29 (4 wks), 11 am - noon Tension in the neck and shoulders can cause a variety of problems including headaches, limited range of movement, and poor posture. Yoga stretches relieve stiffness, create balanced strength, and maintain suppleness. By easing physical tension, you will feel better mentally as well. The series of movements taught in this session can be practiced daily to sustain tension relief. Experience nature s wonders through the senses and the benefits of a simple walk led by Kandy. The effects are best when walking in silence to calm the mind and soothe the nervous system. Asana, Pranayama and Meditation WITH YOGA THERAPIST & MASTER TEACHER: SHARI FRIEDRICHSEN Thursday, Sept. 7, 7-9 pm This class begins with strengthening ourselves through breath awareness and postures, naturally guiding us to explore what s beneath the surface in our bodies, hearts and minds. Practicing asana in this manner will enhance our sensitivity to the power and healing nature of prana. This guides us further inward to pranayama practices that give us exactly what we need for cleansing, nourishing and replenishing. Once we have established ourselves quietly in the subtle dimensions of ourselves through asana and pranayama, our meditation practice is a continued movement inward towards that which is sacred, profound, and innate. Yoga and Meditation for Anxiety and Depression with Athalie Joy, PhD Saturday, Sept. 9, 1-4 pm This three-hour workshop offers instruction in specific yoga postures, breathing, and meditation techniques to help you become confident in your ability to establish calm when you feel anxious and upset. Take-home materials support your ongoing body-mind practice. Be sure to wear comfortable clothes, and eat a light lunch before the program. Fee: $30 (ID: S69) Hatha Flow with Emilee Wednesdays, Sept. 13 - Oct. 18 (6 wks), 6-7:15 pm In this class, classical asanas (yoga poses) are explored through fluid movements that link with the steady flow of breath. Increasingly challenging sequences are constructed to deepen internal focus while improving strength, stamina, balance and flexibility. Each class includes traditional breath training, relaxation and meditation methods as taught in the Himalayan Tradition. This is a Level 2-3 class. Prerequisite: Yoga 2 or greater. Fee: $72 (ID: HF) Sanskrit Study Group with Tracy Draksic, M.A. Fridays, September 15, 2017 - June 15, 2018, 7-9 pm Year Long Study Group: Join us as we continue our study of Sanskrit, the sacred language of the Yoga Tradition. In each class, we work on grammar, vocabulary-building, and mantra recitation. Our emphasis is on enjoying the sangha (company) of fellow seekers as we deepen our knowledge and practice. Classes meet two Fridays per month from September 2017 through June 2018. Syllabus and calendar are available upon request. Two texts are required for this course. Pre-requisites: familiarity with the Sanskrit alphabet and a working knowledge of the Devanagari script OR completion of the Sanskrit Mini Course. Fee: $108 (ID: SAN) Conquering Cravings: Yoga for Willpower and Self-Transformation Saturday, Sept. 16, 9:30 - noon with Cathy So much of our lives are driven by cravings habits and compulsions drive us to overeat, overwork, watch too much TV and form unhealthy relationships. Yoga philosophy provides practical tools for living a healthy and balanced life. Asana (postures), pranayama (breathing techniques), and mindful relaxation and meditation enliven the courage, determination and enthusiasm necessary to transform negative habits into positive ones. Tuesdays, Sept. 19 - Oct. 24 (6 wks), 7-8:30 pm with Cathy For yogis, cultivating willpower is a healing technique, a force for positive change. This 6-week follow-up to Conquering Cravings includes weekly discussion around how yoga defines willpower. We will perform strengthbuilding asanas to fuel the fire of determination, and explore breathing and relaxation techniques that lead to a calm, focused, one pointed mind. Fee: $72 (ID: YW) Rise n Shine! Fall Equinox - AM Yoga Class with Kerry Friday, Sept. 22, 6:45-8 am Embrace the onset of fall with an early morning practice to soothe body, mind and soul. We will balance the cooling days with the warm sounds of the solar mantras and the season s turn toward darkness with slow rhythmic salutations to the sun. Led by Deva Premal s chanting of the Gayatri mantra, we will close the practice by turning toward the light within. This is an all-levels class, although some experience with yoga is anticipated. In his book, Happiness is Your Creation, Swamiji explains how yoga practice can free us from our feelings of being alone and incomplete. In particular, we will discuss the seven golden laws of healthy living - how to eat, breath, sleep, think, enjoy life s pleasures and interact with others properly all the while moving towards the higher goal and purpose of life.
