February 10, 2019 Fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time ST. GEORGE CHURCH 6707 West 175 TH STREET TINLEY PARK, ILLINOIS 60477 stgeorge60477.org MISSION STATEMENT We, the faith-filled community of St. George, nourished by God s Word and His Sacraments and renewed by the Holy Spirit, accept the call to continue the mission of Christ by living in, sharing and transforming our world. MASS TIMES 2019 Daily: 7:30 am: Monday thru Friday Saturday: 8:00 am Vigil of Sunday: 4 pm Sunday: 7:30 am, 9:30 am & 11:30 am Holy Days: to be announced. Confessions (Reconciliation) After the 4:00 pm Mass on Saturday and after the 7:30 and 9:30 am Masses on Sunday. CATHOLICS COME HOME Alive and Well When s the last time you had a spiritual check-up? Ash Wednesday is like a spiritual STOP sign on the journey of life. We pay so much attention to our bodies with health concerns from daily articles in the news headlines, new medicines, new exercises, diets with a different nuance, email health letters, etc, all because we don t want to die. Do we give half as much attention to our spiritual health? When is the last time you did any spiritual reading, even a prayer book or scriptures? There are spiritual magazines at our entrances, have you ever taken one to read? We read labels on food packages, do you read the brochures regarding collections for various needs and the information they provide? Lent is approaching fast - just a few weeks. Now is the time to set some goals for your spiritual health. Many families will raise consciousness about the dangers of smoking to loved ones. Do you ever use the same concern for their spiritual wellbeing? Do you invite them to join you for Sunday Mass? Is there a marriage that needs to be blessed in the Church? Are you divorced and feel outside the Church, but never have inquired to one of the priests about what can be done? Have you been away from Communion for a long time because you have sins you have been reluctant to confess or deal with? The person who is obese or a couch potato feels left out of many activities, but justifies their situation and numbs their conscience with excuses that enable them to continue with their inactivity. The same is true of those who are spiritually flabby, they have excuses and no action. The first reading from the prophet Isaiah, relates a vision that concludes with his call. He feels unworthy, but in an intimate gesture, the angel touches his lips with a burning ember, revealing that the Lord who calls Isaiah is a Lord of forgiveness and mercy. The Lord calls us as well. Last Sunday we heard Jeremiah s call. In today s Gospel, Luke 5:1-11, Jesus calls Simon Peter and his companions with a miraculous catch of fish even though Peter says, Master, we have worked hard all night and have caught nothing. Lent is a time to hear the voice of God anew for each of us. It is a time to be fishermen and bring our family, neighbors and friends closer to the Lord once again. All Peter had to do was cast his nets again. All we have to do is invite others again with sincerity and love - the nets that tug at the heartstrings of others. Make a difference. Get involved in a ministry of the parish. Get to know your neighbors on your block and in the pews around you. Encourage others. Learn more about your faith. You can make a difference! Renew My Church must be more than commercials, slogans and homilies or reallocations of parishes and resources. All of us make others feel welcome. Make your faith count. God is counting on each one of us to renew my Church. Fr. Ken Fleck

Dear Parishioners, As many of you know, each year we have fewer priests in the Archdiocese of Chicago. As a result, there is a critical need for priests to serve as pastors in our local church. Bishop Wypych and Fr. Michael Knotek, head of the priest s placement board, have asked me to consider being a pastor as they prepare to assign priests for the 2019-2020 fiscal year. After much prayer and conversation with trusted individuals, I have decided to enter what is called the pastor pool for July 2019. The pastor pool is the list of individuals who are applying to become pastors, from which the Archdiocese will generally choose pastors for parishes with openings. Thus, it is most likely that I will be assigned as a pastor to another parish, beginning this July. I have been looking at various parishes and praying for guidance in my discernment. Please pray for me, as this certainly is a step into the unknown for me. I have enjoyed being a priest here at St. George and getting to know so many of you. I will always be grateful for my time here and will continue to pray for you as I begin this next chapter of my life. When I am told where I will be going, I will be sure to let you all know. FAITH & SCIENCE: FRIENDS OR FOES Saturday, February 16 6:30 to 8:00 am There is an epidemic crisis in modern culture between faith and science. Many younger people are leaving religion in droves based on misperceptions of a fundamental conflict between the two. As men, as leaders, we need to turn the tide! Over the next several weeks, we will seek to clearly understand the teaching and perspective of the Church so that we can silence any personal doubts, as well as share this message with others. We will expand and stretch our minds! Make the extra-effort to attend over the next four weeks as Dr. Chris Baglow helps to clear the weeds within our intellectual and spiritual formation. The responsibility falls upon all of us to know how to dialogue with our friends, coworkers, and especially our children on the relationship between faith and science. Hot coffee and a hearty breakfast including bacon, pancakes, egg casseroles, fruit, toast, muffins, yogurt, donuts, pastries, juice and more are available beginning at 6:30 am. Our program begins promptly at 7:00 am. Please join us and invite a friend! That Man Is You! meets on Saturday mornings for breakfast in O Connell Hall at St. George School. All adult men, 18 and older, are invited and encouraged to attend. To learn more about TMIY, please contact Gary at (708) 614-1734; ghendzell@msn.com. PERSONAL BENEFIT, COMMON GOOD In its first year the Illinois Tax Credit Scholarship Program, "Invest in Kids", awarded scholarships to more than 3,000 students from low-income families to attend a Catholic school of their choice in Cook and Lake Counties. This was made possible through the generosity of thousands of donors who took advantage of the seventy-five percent state income tax credit on their donation. To help their donations have even more impact in 2019, several donors have agreed to pool their resources and offer a 2-for-1 matching gift program to the more than 160 schools run by the Archdiocese of Chicago, up to $5 million total. Tickets are also available at the rectory office or at the PART table on Sundays!! HOW IT WORKS For every dollar designated to a qualifying school through Empower Illinois between December 1, 2018 and February 28, 2019, the school will receive two dollars in matching funds. The donations are capped at $100,000 per school. The program will end when all matching funds have been depleted or on February 28, 2019, whichever comes first. After April 1, 2019, any matching gift program funds that are not awarded at a designated school will be reallocated to low-income students at schools with unmet demand. EXAMPLE A donor with about $75,000 in income could make a donation of $5,000 to Empower Illinois, in cash or stock, that would... Eliminate their Illinois state income tax liability (approximately $3,750); and Provide $15,000 in scholarship support (after the $10,000 match) The St. George School Band Boosters would like to thank everyone who supported the Mostaccioli Dinner on Sunday, January 27. It was a huge success! There was plenty of delicious food and fellowship. A special thank you to those who donated raffle prizes and all the volunteers who made the event possible. All proceeds will benefit the St. George School Band. For a total cost of $1,250, this donor has now provided three students with $5,000 in scholarships to use to attend a Catholic school of their choice (donation of $5,000 minus the $3,750 in state credit). Book discussion date is set for: Friday, March 29, 2019 at 7:00 pm. An extraordinary journey of faith! Save the date!! Sunday, July 14, 2019 Parish Picnic at Vogt Woods Watch future bulletins for more information! A modern-day Confessions of Saint Augustine, The Seven Storey Mountain is one of the most influential religious works of the twentieth century. It tells of the growing restlessness of a brilliant and passionate young man whose search for peace and faith leads him, at the age of twenty -six, to take vows in one of the most demanding Catholic orders - the Trappist Monks. At the Abbey of Gethsemani, "the four walls of my new freedom," Thomas Merton struggles to withdraw from the world, but only after he has fully immersed himself in it. The Seven Storey Mountain has been a favorite of readers ranging from Graham Greene to Claire Booth Luce, Eldridge Cleaver and Frank McCourt. Since its original publication, this timeless spiritual tome has been published in over twenty languages and has touched millions of lives. For information, call Angie Brady at (708) 532-3644. Active Parishioner Status We receive many requests for parishioners to be godparents or sponsors for the Sacraments of Baptism and Confirmation and to rightfully enjoy the number of services offered at St. George. Part of the request is to be able to verify that a person is an active member of St. George. Because of the nature of our congregation, having so many visitors, it is difficult to know everyone. An active member of St. George Catholic Church: Is properly registered and supporting the Church. Faithfully attends Mass on Sundays and Holy Days. Participates in parish activities when possible. Uses the parish envelope system for donations. Adult children living at home are required to register separately from their parents as parishioners. While assessments of an inquirer s status will be made individually, the above are the main factors what will be considered in making that determination. Registration will take place next Sunday, February 17, 2019, after the 9:30 am Mass in the Parish Life Center, Meeting Rms. 1&2. Multi-Parish Mission Project Let Us Build A House Where Love Can Dwell June 7-9, 2019 On the campus of St. George Hosted by: St. Elizabeth Seton St. Francis of Assisi St. George St. Julie Billiart St. Michael Our Lady of the Woods 10 Welcome to St. George Catholic Church Tinley Park, IL 60477

Please Make Your Gift to the 2019 Annual Catholic Appeal Come, Follow Me...and share the Word During the last few weeksw, many parish families received a letter from Cardinal Cupich requesting your participation in pledging to the 2019 Annual Catholic Appeal. We ask that you respond as generously as possible. The Appeal supports both Parish and Archdiocesan ministries, and funds services tat are of great help to our Parish. This year, the theme of the Appeal is Come Follow Me...and share the Word. We have all received God s love. By financially supporting the ministries and services funded by the Annual Catholic Appeal, we help to extend God s love to many, many others. As you review the mailing from Cardinal Cupich, take note of those services that directly support the work of our parish and please give generously. When our parish reaches its goal of $55,986.30 in paid pledges, all additional funds contributed will be returned to us for use in our Parish. Is Your Soul Hungry? Is your soul hungry? Our souls need food and nourishment just like our bodies do. But, for the soul, pizza will never do. Not even deep dish pizza. St. John Vianney told us, The soul hungers for God, and nothing but God can satiate it. Therefore, He came to dwell on earth and assumed a Body in order that this Body might become the Food of our souls. We get to nourish our souls by receiving Our Lord in Holy Communion. Our souls also hunger for friendship. St. Alphonsus de Liguori said, Good friends find pleasure in one another s company. Let us know pleasure in the company of our best friend, a friend who can do everything for us, a friend who loves us beyond measure. Here in the Blessed Sacrament we can talk to Him straight from the heart. Your soul s best friend is right there in Holy Family Chapel day and night waiting and longing for you. Come to the chapel and visit with Your Friend who loves you so much. Come often and your soul and your spirit will be lifted beyond measure. Even better, call Bill Beckman at (708) 429-2762 and sign up to spend an hour every week with Our Lord in The Blessed Sacrament. After some time you will find more and more joy by spending time with Our Lord. When you re about to leave the chapel, you may ask Our Lord, Did You enjoy us being together as much as I did? He just might say in your heart, More than you know! Terry Dorencz February 10, 2019 Fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time 11
