Transcription:

March 29, 2015 Palm Sunday of the Passion of the Lord Because of this, God greatly exalted him and bestowed on him the name which is above every name, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bend, of those in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father. Hosanna in the highest! My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?...at noon darkness came over the whole land until three in the afternoon. And at three o clock Jesus cried out in a loud voice, Eloi, Eloi, lema sabachthani? which is translated, My God, my God, why have you forsaken me? Some of the bystanders who heard it said, Look, he is calling Elijah. One of them ran, soaked a sponge with wine, put it on a reed and gave it to him to drink saying, Wait, let us see if Elijah comes to take him down. Jesus gave a loud cry and breathed his last. Here all kneel and pause for a short time. The veil of the sanctuary was torn in two from top to bottom. When the centurion who stood facing him saw how he breathed his last he said, Truly this man was the Son of God! - Mark 14:1-15:47 WELCOME TO ST. Good Friday, April 3 - Good Friday of the Lord s Passion Communion & Veneration of the Cross 12:00 pm Holy Saturday, April 4 - Easter Vigil Mass at 9:00 pm PALM SUNDAY OF THE LORD S PASSION Taking Up the Cross - Jesus, the innocent one, is riding into Jerusalem amid hosannas and waving palm fronds. He knows this excitement and reverie won t last. He knows it is simply a momentary display of affection and support that will vanish in a few days as these same crowds will call for his crucifixion, his torture, his death. Yet, he goes through with it. Is it a charade? No, it is all part of the humiliation he must endure to complete his earthly ministry. He will fulfill the Scriptures. The onlookers will play their role in all its terrible sinful dimensions. But Jesus has not left them alone to wallow in sin. Soon they will learn that he has come to save them. His Passion and death, especially this trip to Jerusalem, is all part of God s plan to give us a new life. His resurrection is our hope. We can be like the crowd shouting hosanna, or we can choose to take up the cross with Jesus on our journey to our own personal Calvary. - Paul Pennick Please join your parish family in celebrating our Risen Lord at Easter liturgies on April 5th. Easter Sunday Mass at 8:30 am and Easter Sunday Mass at 11:00 am All are invited and welcome to attend! TRIDUUM - Our Walk With Jesus Picture yourself in the upper room with Jesus and his disciples on that first Holy Thursday. For the next three days you will share the Passover meal, make the torturous journey to Calvary and be with Jesus on Easter Sunday, witnessing his triumph over death. Holy Thursday through Easter Sunday, the summit of the church s liturgical year, is called the Triduum. It is our time to remember Jesus suffering, death and resurrection, his supreme sacrifice, his gift to us of eternal life. At the Mass of the Lord s Supper on Holy Thursday evening, we commemorate Christ s washing of the disciples feet with the instruction, I have given you a model to follow, so that as I have done for you, you should also do. (John 13:15). At that same time, Jesus instituted the Eucharist, giving his body and blood to his disciples: This is my body, which will be given for you; do this in memory of me. On Good Friday, we gather to read from Scripture and to pray in intercession for the whole world. Veneration of the Cross is a common custom at this time and is usually done with a simple touch or a kiss. It is also our time to mourn the death of Jesus and to remember his sacrifice on the cross and his gift of eternal life. Our mourning and silence on Good Friday and Holy Saturday are followed by the joy-filled return of the Gloria of the Easter Vigil Mass. The Vigil Mass typically includes the Liturgy of Baptism, as we welcome our catechumens into the Church, while the rest of the congregation publicly renews it baptismal vows.
