From The Pastor I want to share with you some highlights of the rituals of Holy Week Cambridge, MA Passion (Palm) Sunday begins our Holy Week journey. We begin with a special Gospel reading (Mark 11:1-10)) that recalls Jesus entry into the city of Jerusalem. In a kind of impromptu parade, people grab branches from the trees and acclaim Jesus as their Savior. Ironically, in just a few days, many of the same people will be calling Crucify Him outside Pilate s Palace. We use palm branches to symbolize that we too vacillate between following and turning away from Jesus. Three readers will proclaim the Passion account from Mark s Gospel. Each liturgy will last approximately 1 hour 15 minutes. Holy Thursday: (Service begins at 7:00 p.m.) is a celebration of the command of Jesus Do this in memory of Me in both the institution of the Sacrament of Eucharist and in the imperative to serve, not to be served. Our Scripture (Exodus 12:1-8, 11-14 The Passover Meal; First Corinthians 11:23-26 now we are to eat and drink in memory of the Lord; and John 13:1-15 the Washing of the Feet of the Disciples) set the theme of the celebration. Nourished in the very life of Jesus, like him, we are to be of service to one another. This is ritualized in the service of Washing of the Feet. Any and all members of the congregation are invited to share in this ritual. The service concludes with a procession from the church to the parish center where the Eucharist will be kept and the church will be readied for Good Friday. For those who would like to remain, a time of personal prayer is followed by the communal praying of Night Prayer at 9:30 p.m. This liturgy will last approximately 1 hour 30 minutes. Good Friday: (Service begins at 3:00 p.m.) celebrates the death of the Lord. It is the only day in the entire church year that Mass cannot be celebrated (although communion will be offered at the Solemn afternoon service of the Lord s Passion and Death.) Highlights of this liturgy include the solemn singing of the Passion (from John s Gospel) and the Veneration of the Cross. This liturgy will last approximately 1 hour 15 minutes. We will also have Family Stations of the Cross at 11:00 a.m. and Stations and Veneration at 7:00 p.m. Easter Vigil (Holy Saturday): (Service begins at 7:30 p.m.) is the most important and most beautiful service of the church year! It is also the first Mass of Easter. This service is structured in four parts. The Service of Light begins outside of the church with the blessing of the new fire and the lighting of the new Paschal Candle. We will process inside, light our own candles and sing the Exultet to God s praise. The Service of the Word traces salvation history from creation through the resurrection of Jesus. The Service of Water will have us renew the promises of our own baptism and sign ourselves with the newly blessed Easter water. And, the Service of Eucharist will nourish and feed us in the sacrament that proclaims Jesus risen from the dead! Alleluia! This liturgy will last approximately 2 hours. School Gala a Success! Our annual Dare to Dream Auction and Gala, held on March 10, was a huge success thanks to the support of our entire parish community! Thank you to all parishioners who attended, purchased raffle tickets, supported and sponsored the gala. You helped raise $96,442.00 for much needed funds to support our school's mission. These funds directly support the school s operating budget, including scholarships and new initiatives, such as technology and enrichment in Arts, Drama, Music and Sports. has been offering a top-notch education within our great Catholic tradition since 1901. We continue to do so only with the personal support and generosity of our parishioners. God bless you all! Eve Encinas-Lončar, Director of Advancement Pope Tweets @Pontifex Jesus made Himself like the grain of wheat that falls to the ground and dies to give life. Our hope springs from that love-filled life! March 17, 2018 As we listen to the aspirations of young people, may we catch a glimpse of the world that lies ahead, and of the roads the Church is called to travel March 18, 2018 4
