Summer Chat With Our Missionaries Darrell & Laura Lee B. in Rwanda What is the temperature there right now? Kigali, Rwanda 18 to 20 degrees C at night and low 30 s in the sun in the daytime (or high 20 s). When you look outside, what do you see? From our balcony, we see palm trees, hibiscus bushes, poinsettia bushes, a frangipani tree, the brick wall surrounding our yard with metal roofs below that, and then the rolling hills of Kigali. What is your accommodation like? We live in a normal house fairly large with two floors. We have western bathrooms and a kitchen that is similar to North America (with a gas stove). What is your usual mode of transportation? We have a car. What is something unusual about the culture there? The cow is king in Rwanda! The dowry ceremony, which is part of the wedding tradition, includes the giving of a cow/cows to the bride s family (or the envelope representing the cow in today s culture). They even play recorded moo s during a certain part! What languages are spoken? Kinyarwanda, English, and French How big is the average family? Ranges from two children to six to eight kids, although there is a push toward smaller families If you could receive any item in a care package, what would it be? Candy (Skittles, licorice, Nibs, Twizzlers, and Fuzzy Peach all travel well), Kool-Aid (no sugar added), and Crystal Light drink mix. What does a typical church service look like? Includes lots of music with both congregational singing and choirs, as well as a sermon usually between three and four hours long How open are people to the gospel? Very!
Summer Chat With Our Missionaries Pauline K. in Kenya What is the temperature there right now? In Kenya, June and July are the cold season s months. Right now the temperature ranges from 15 degrees to 20 Celsius. The weather is chilly and at times bits of sunshine. When you look outside, what do you see? I can see the trees, birds, buildings, people walking, electricity posts, communication network boosters, clouds, and hills. What is your accommodation like? A simple bed with warm beddings for the weather to keep warm. What is your usual mode of transportation? I use public transport known as matatus, which is a 14 seater capacity van. What is something unusual about the culture there? The practice of witchcraft in some native communities What languages are spoken? English, Kiswahili, Kikamba (majority), Kikuyu, and other tribes are minority. How big is the average family? An average family comprises of five to eight family members, including the parents. If you could receive any item in a care package, what would it be? Washing detergents What does a typical church service look like? It starts with prayers, worship songs and presentations, offerings, announcements, sermon, and then final prayers and exit song. How open are people to the gospel? Majority of the people are very religious and open to the gospel. Salvation Army needs Food Bank volunteers (mornings, Monday to Thursday) to sort food and prepare food hampers.
