Please remember the Church and "in par cular" your Parish in your will.

PADRE S CORNER JUNE 5, 2016 " Spanky and Our Gang" was a band out of Bloomington, Illinois in the turbulent 1960's, as America was challenged by a future war in Vietnam plus political assassinations of the Kennedy brothers and Martin Luther King. Led by Elaine " Spanky " McFarlane, the group was named after the " Our Gang " comedies of the 1930's by director Hal Roach. Their first album was released by Mercury Records on August 1, 1967 and featured eventual hits like " Sunday Will Never Be the Same " and " Lazy Day. ". The second album was released in April of 1968, featuring my favorite song by the group entitled " Like to Get to Know You " ( a song I will get back to momentarily ). The group disbanded early in 1969 after lead guitarist Malcolm Hale died on October 31, 1968 from a carbon dioxide poisoning accident. As a young boy in the late 1960's, the songs from this group became very meaningful and beautiful to me as the lyrics and melodies reflected the life longings I and we all yearn for. Listen some day, maybe on You Tube, to the sounds and soulful words of " Like to Get to Know You. " The search for meaning within the scope of human existence is reflected in verses like these from this enchanting song : " Yes, I would like to get to know you, if I could. Like to get to know you. Finally I found, searching all around just was not the answer. One I thought was true looked a bit like you. Figured I might chance her. Hardly need to say she went on her way. Said it was all over. Well it's been some time and I guess that I'm just meant to be a rover. Now I can't promise that I'll spend a day with you. Can't promise that I'll find a way with you. Can't promise no. I can't promise that I'll love you, but I'd like to get to know you. Yes I would if I could. " Anyone who has been in love, and has lost that love, can readily identify with the painful beauty that the verbiage of this incredible song express. The search and longings for human love reflect a deeper search for completion and integrity of the heart, mind, and soul. However, even the best models of human love can never completely fill the interior void that every human being ultimately pursues in life. Why is this? Saint Augustine wrote 1600 years ago in his diary journal called " Confessions " that " Our heart is restless O Lord until it rests in Thee. " Saint Bernadette of Lourdes, who received visitations in France by the Virgin Mary in the first half of 1858, was told by the Blessed Mother " I do not promise you happiness in this world, but in the next. " We must all realize that full happiness and peace is not fully obtainable on planet earth, though there are defined memory moments that hint at both states. The restless search does not just stop with human relationships. Other venues or avenues of pursuit could include following favorite sports teams, hobbies, real estate ownership, cars that brand us a certain way, educational degree prowess, and in the sadder realm the collapse into a lonely world of alcoholism and drug abuse. As Christians we are taught that our ultimate pursuit, in the search for meaningful living, must come through union in God with His holy will for each of us. There may be persons, places, and things we have to let go of or reduce in commitment size in order to find this will from Him. We discover this integration through our prayer life, individually and in common, nourished by the sacramental system that Jesus immersed into the lives of His first apostles and followers. Parish trips this year in late October ( Italy ), and next during 2017 in both April ( Portugal, France, Spain ) and December ( Germany,Austria,Switzerland ) can also help us with new cultural and religious exposures to other places and times that expand our spiritual visions. Please pray for me that I live out His will, as I pray the same for you. Prayerfully, Father Bill

First, the closing of St. Mary s Church and second, the relocation of Fr. Bill to Liberty, NY. St. Mary s has been a pillar in this community. They have helped many families with clothing, shelter, food, and many more. St. Mary s Church has also be an anchor for the Newburgh Zion Lions. Through their continued support for our program, we have given hundreds of inner city youth, HOPE. In addition, they have financially supported and sponsored many under privileged youths, allowing them the same opportunity as kids whose parents could afford their participation. With St. Mary s now closed, this program is greatly affected financially. With our continued determination to help the children in this community, we are asking for your help. We are seeking financial donations or if you would like, you can sponsor a child s participation. We hope and pray that God will persuade your heart to help us continue our work in this great city We thank you for your support and we look forward to hearing from you soon. All contributions can be made to the Newburgh Zion Lions and is a tax deductible contribution. If you are interested in sponsoring a child, please contact Harold Rayford at 845-527-0354. The Catholic Daughters will be meeting for Mass on Wednesday, June 15 at 7 pm at Sacred Heart Church in Newburgh. Installation of officers & reception of new members will take place. There will be a short business meeting following at Msgr. Valastro Activity Center. Please note date change as our meeting room will not be available due to the Italian Feast.
