February 23-24, 2019 Mary Luke 7:36-50 Jesus loves it when we show him love. First 10 minutes of the service hour: Engage kids in cooperative play activities to help them connect to other kids Next 5 minutes: Connect Time Before going into large group, remind your class what HOPS the Kangaroo says: Have Fun. Obey your leaders. Put your listening ears on. Share with others Next 25 minutes: Large Group Last 25 minutes: Snack and Small Group As kids leave, remind them to tell their parents what they re going to say every time they smell today s craft! Mary Magdalene showed Jesus love in a crazy way: she cried over his feet, wiped her tears with her hair, then poured perfume all over his feet! But Jesus loved it, because he loves it when we show him our love.

GOAL: Connect time is all about engaging kids in a short, interactive game to prepare them for Large Group. Clean up! (10 minutes after the service start time, when you get the 5-minute warning from the presenter) Line up. Tell kids today we are going to hear about how much Jesus loves it when we love him and it doesn t matter how we tell him! Let s practice: Say, I love you, Jesus in some fun and crazy ways: Backwards Upside down (leaning down as far as you can) Loudly! While dancing In a singing voice With a goofy face With your arms in the air While sitting on the floor While standing on your tip-toes In a whisper Silently, in your heart As you walk into Large Group, encourage kids to put on their listening ears! Remind them that HOPS will be showing us how we should act in Large Group, so we have to listen!

How do YOU like to show love to Jesus? Prepare a personal example ahead of time and then share it with kids! WELCOME AND INTRO Main Goal: Review the beginning of God s story and rescue plan. Notes: Here s a link to today story video: Jesus and the sinful woman: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ii_v 3KTtgDw&t=70s *Click to play intro music. Say: Hi Friends! Welcome to Kids Club. I'm and I'm really glad you're here today. Before we get started, I want you to meet my friend HOPS. Video: HOPS Obey Your Leaders Say: (Holding up the Bible.) This is God s story. Out of all the stories in the world, this is the most important. Do you know what it s called? (Let kids respond the Bible.) That s right, the Bible! It s God s Rescue plan. It shows us how He rescued us from all the wrong things in the world. Say: In the beginning, God made the whole world and everything in it. He created the sun and the moon, the water and the land, the plants and the animals, and people like you and me! Everything was good. Give me a big thumbs up! (Let kids respond. Then change your tone.) Say: But THEN, something bad happened. Adam and Eve disobeyed God, and all the wrong things came into the world. Things like sadness and death. Show me your sad face. (Let kids respond.) Say: Even though Adam and Eve disobeyed God, God loved them anyway! He planned a great rescue so that Adam and Eve, and you and me, could be close to God again! Do you know who the Rescuer is? (Let kids say: Jesus!)

INTRO: PERFUME Main Goal: Explain why perfume was such a special gift in Jesus time. MARY MAGDALENE SHOW LOVE TO JESUS Main Goal: Understand that Mary showed love to Jesus by giving him her most valued possession. Say: In today s story, we re going to hear all about a lady who showed Jesus love. Her name was Mary. Can you guys say Mary? (Let kids say it.) Great! And you know what? She showed him love with perfume. (Image: Perfume)This is a type of perfume that we see sometimes nowadays. And why do we use perfume? (Let kids say: To smell good.) That s right! Let s all touch our noses to remind ourselves that perfume helps us smell good (Let kids respond.) (Image: Big Jar) Well, back when Jesus was alive, perfume came in a BIG jar like this. Sometimes the jars looked different, but there was a LOT of perfume and it was very, very special because it cost lots of money. Say: So in today s story, a lady named Mary used perfume to say I love you to Jesus. We re going to watch a video about it. As we watch, see if you can figure out what Mary did with the perfume. Video: Saddleback Kids / Jesus and the Sinful Woman Say: Oh my goodness! First, Mary took the huge bottle of perfume. Let s all pretend like WE have a big bottle of perfume too. Be careful not to drop it! (Let kids respond.) Say: When she saw Jesus, she knelt down. Let s all kneel down too. (Kneel down with kids.) The she began to cry. Can you show me your sad face? (Let kids respond.) Say: Her tears got Jesus feet all wet! She wiped them with her hair, and then she broke the perfume jar and poured it over Jesus feet. Let s pretend to pour our special perfume over Jesus feet. (Let kids respond.) Ask: That meant she gave Jesus the very nicest thing she had! Can you imagine giving someone the best, nicest, most awesome thing you have? Well that s what Mary did. Say: Mary showed love to Jesus. Was Jesus happy? (Let kids respond.) Yes, Jesus LOVES that! Say: Let s show him right now by saying, I love you, Jesus! (AS LOUD AS WE CAN!) On the count of three: ready? 1-2-3: I LOVE YOU JESUS! Good job! Say: We can show love to Jesus too, in all kinds of different ways! We can tell him out loud, like we just did. We can ask him for help. We can be kind to our friends, because that s what Jesus wants us to do. And we can worship him, with songs!

WRAP UP AND WORSHIP Main Goal: Help kids interact through prayer and worship! Notes: Say: We re going to show love to Jesus again by talking to him, and telling him how much we love him. So right now, let s bow our heads and close our eyes. Repeat after me: Pray: Hi God! Thank you that you love us. Thank you that Mary loved you. We love you! In Jesus name, Aaaaa-MEN Set up worship: Now let s show love to Jesus in a different way! We re going to stand up and sing songs to him! Music Video: Be Strong Take Courage Music Video: Let All That I Am Praise the Lord Music Video: Jesus Loves Me Dismiss kids to small groups. (Be creative as you dismiss them. Ask them to come give you a high five first, or maybe tiptoe or hop--like Hops--to their groups.)

Goal: Kids will (1) understand how Mary showed love to Jesus and (2) understand how WE can show love to Jesus too! Why? Loving Jesus back is an application that kids can practice at any age. Hopefully, the sweet-smelling dryer sheets will give them an easy way to do that. Tips: Write kids names on the paper bags before they leave the table! REVIEW THE STORY 1. Who surprised Jesus with a special gift while he was at dinner? (Mary) 2. What gift did Mary give Jesus? (She poured perfume on his feet) 3. Why did Mary pour perfume on Jesus feet? (she was telling Jesus she loved him) 4. What did the Important people think of Mary and her gift? (they thought she was a bad person and that she should have sold her perfume and given it to the poor) 5. What did Jesus think of Mary s gift? (he loved it and knew Mary loved him) 6. How do you like to say I love you to Jesus? (As kids finish snacks, help them with this one: Say, Do you like to. then finish the sentence with things like sing? Dance? Pray? Read your Bible? Be kind? Say, I love you, Jesus!?) MAKE IT PERSONAL We can t make big jars of perfume, but let s make our own sweet-smelling gift to Jesus. You can take it home and remember to say, I love you, Jesus! every time you smell it! Give each kid a little gift bag with the following: 1 heart sticker: Say, I love you Jesus! 1 dryer sheet: Let them smell the dryer sheet: it smells good, like the perfume Mary poured on Jesus feet! Story card: review the story with kids Extra time? Give kids a coloring sheet. After that, have kids do the Connect Time activity again, and do crazy things while saying I love you, Jesus!
