From the Desk of...lorella Chavez Fourth Sunday in Ordinary Time February 3, 2019 The readings this week call us to reflect on our own call to be prophets. As members of the body of Christ we are to continue the mission of Jesus in the world today as difficult as it is. The Gospel places Jesus squarely in the long line of prophets sent to Israel by God s mercy. In Him we too are to bring God s message to the world. Like Jeremiah we have been called from before our birth to this task. Like Jesus we will sometimes be praised and welcomed and sometimes rejected and threatened. It is the presence and strength of the Holy Spirit who abides in us with His gifts that allows us to be faithful to this mission, a mission that can be accomplished only in love. Of faith, hope and love, the greatest of them is love. I believe that love starts in the womb. As Christians, we believe that life begins at conception. In the womb we are nourished; warm and growing in what should be the safest we will ever feel. This is what God intended. God himself forms the child in its mother s womb. The meaning hidden in this idea is that God knows each human person intimately from the very beginning and is the unique source and master of our being. A child is a gift from God. The love that scripture talks about should not be confused with the selfish passion that seeks only one s own interests and pleasure. We sometimes call love the desire to own an asset that already exists, or even the mere physical attractiveness. It is in this sense that we speak of the love of a young man for a beautiful girl. But, in reality, this often is reduced to nothing but a craving to possess, to have her all to himself. Paul speaks of love as if it were a person. He presents it with a set of fifteen verbs. He says that it is patient, bears injustice, controls resentment. It is lovable, is always willing to do good to all. It is not jealous. Not proud, not disrespectful. It cares about other people s problems. It does not give in to provocations and always triumphs over evil. Love is compared to other gifts. Other gifts pass away, will no longer be necessary, will be forgotten, will be like the games of childhood that, at some point, there s no more fun and are abandoned; love instead will be eternal, it will never end. How aware are we of this mission to which God calls us and how well have we been living it out each day? Following Mary s advice.. Do what he says is all we have to do. It s really a simple thing. Why do we make it so difficult? Yours in Christ, Lorella MINISTRIES & SPECIAL CLASSES THE SAN MIGUEL GIFT SHOP IS OPEN DAILY MONDAY THRU THURSDAY 10:00 AM TO 4:00 PM & FRIDAY 10:00 AM TO 12:00 NOON Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament: Every Friday following the 9:00 am Mass until Noon.
