The Baptism of The Lord

January 10, 2016 St. Kevin R.C. Church Page 2 Dear Friends: Today s celebration of the Baptism of the Lord brings the Christmas season to its first ending. Tomorrow we begin Ordinary Time until Ash Wednesday on February 10 th. However, on February 2 nd, the celebration of the Presentation of the Lord, known as Candlemas, extends the events of the infancy of Jesus and becomes a second ending to this holy season. In today s Gospel, Luke tells us that Jesus was praying after He was baptized by John: And a voice came from heaven, You are my beloved Son; with you I am well pleased. In Luke and Mark, the words of the Father are directed to Jesus Himself; in Matthew s Gospel, the Father s voice speaks to the crowd about Jesus: This is my beloved Son. In this Jubilee Year of Mercy, we pray that the Father will be pleased with us in our efforts to open our hearts to His love and forgiveness so that we can extend His grace to our brothers and sisters. I want to remind you that the parish website (www.stkevinflushing.org) and the parish s Facebook page (www.facebook.com/stkevinflushing) are regularly updated and are good sources for information about parish life and events taking place in the diocese and in the Church, especially during this Jubilee Year. On the Facebook page I post inspirational prayers, articles and videos that you might find helpful or interesting. Feel free to like and share the postings. The Diocese of Brooklyn is launching a new evangelization initiative: ARISE Together in Christ is a program sponsored by RENEW International. Parishes will go through training over the next few months so that the program can begin in the fall of 2016. Agnes Rus will be recruiting volunteer leaders to go through the training for St. Kevin Parish. If you are interested, please contact her at the Faith Formation Office or the Pro Sanctity Center. We look forward to a renewal in faith at St. Kevin Parish through this new initiative! You can learn more by going to the RENEW International website: www.renewintl.org/arise. Just a reminder during the Jubilee Year of Mercy, there are extra opportunities for confession: every Sunday after the 8:00 AM Mass, and on First Sunday during adoration (1:00 2:30 PM). This program encourages families or households to pray regularly for vocations to the priesthood, diaconate, and consecrated life. Each week a family/household will receive the Vocation Chalice at Mass and take it home with a promise to pray for vocations during that week. The family/household/single parishioner places the chalice in a prominent place in the home and gathers as a family or invites friends together each day to pray around the chalice, asking God to help raise awareness for vocations in the Church and from our parish. Resources will be given with a different prayer for each day. At the end of the week, the family brings the chalice back to the parish so the next family can take it home. We hope that through prayer, our parish will become a source of vocations to serve the diocese and the Church. Called to Serve For many weeks now, we have been celebrating the appearance of the divine presence in human form. As a child, he came to Mary and Joseph, was seen by the shepherds, and then by some wandering magi from the East. Today we celebrate another showing, later in time, to a group gathered at the Jordan River. John hesitated to baptize Jesus, whom he recognized as one mightier than I. But he did as Jesus asked, and the Holy Spirit descended and heaven s voice spoke to Jesus, You are my beloved Son. Jesus was beginning his public life of teaching and service. Soon he would start calling others to join him. Peter was one of the first to be called by Jesus. In today s second reading, he announces the heart of the message, peace through Jesus Christ, who is Lord of all. Peter was called, and you and I are called to spread that message and to serve God s word. SAINT HILARY (c. 315-367) - January 13 Born in Poitiers, France, whose populace would later elect him bishop, Hilary, married and a father, was converted from paganism to Christianity through his reading of scripture. The focus of his prayerful study was the Prologue to the Gospel according to John, which portrays Jesus as the divine Logos, eternally begotten of the Father. As a result, Hilary became in the words of the biblical scholar Jerome, the Latin Trumpet against the Arians, heretics who believed Jesus to be merely human, not divine. In defense of Christ s divinity, Hilary was not only eloquent in debate but utterly fearless in the face of relentless persecution and even exile. Thus by the witness of his own discipleship, Hilary taught that faith in Jesus as the divine Son of God has consequences. Reflecting on Jesus challenge to his disciples, You are the salt of the earth (Matthew 5:13), Hilary notes that, as salt both preserves from corruption and adds savor to food, so must the faithful disciple bear a witness that, by word and example, leads others to immortality and virtuous living. January 10, 2016 St. Kevin R.C.Church Page 6 Stewardship Thought In today s reading from the Gospel of Luke we hear the proclamation of the baptism of Jesus with all the people. Indeed, heaven was opened, and the Father announced His special favor. Whenever we partake of the body and blood of Christ, heed his call in our daily lives, share his Good News, become instruments of his transforming justice and peace, heaven is opened to us, and through the Holy Spirit, the Lord announces his special favor on us as well. A good stewardship reflection this week might be this: How, or in what ways, have we personally experienced God s special favor in our lives? Save the Date Men s Conference Leaders + Protectors + Providers Rise Up + Be Strong You Are Sent The Diocese of Brooklyn will have a Men s Conference on Saturday, April 16th beginning at 9:00 A.M. at Most Precious Blood Church (70 Bay 47th Street, Brooklyn). Luke 3:22 Stewardship Saint for January Angela Merici was born in a small town in the Republic of Venice around 1470. She was orphaned when she was ten years old and moved in with relatives in the city of Brescia, in northern Italy. When Angela Merici returned to her hometown, she began to devote her life to the education of impoverished young women. In the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries, education for women was reserved for the wealthy and for nuns, who were the best educated. Angela loved working with children and she believed that education and Christian formation were especially needed for young girls. She devoted her time to teaching girls in her home, which she had converted into a school. Angela brought together a group of unmarried women who went out into the street to gather up the girls they saw to teach them and offer religious instruction in their homes. These women had little money but were bound together by their dedication to education and commitment to serving Jesus Christ. Angela would remind her group that they had a greater need to serve the poor than the poor had of their service. She embraced a prayerful and simple lifestyle. Angela s group was so successful that Angela was asked to bring her innovative approach to educating young women to other cities. Her ministry impressed many and was brought to the attention of Pope Clement VII. In 1535, Angels Merici chose twelve young women and formally started the Company of Saint Ursula in a small house in Brescia. Although it was never a recognized religious order in her lifetime, Angela s Company of St. Ursula, or the Ursuline nuns, was the first group of women religious to work outside of a cloister and the first teaching order of women. Among some of the last pieces of advice she gave her fellow sisters was a stewardship message: that they should do in life what they would have wanted to do in death. She died on January 27, 1540 at seventy years of age. Her feast day is January 27th. 2015 Statement of Contribution Forms If you would like to receive a donation statement for 2015 for tax purposes, please complete the form below and return it to the rectory or place it in the collection basket at Mass. ***************************************************************************************************************** Name: Address: Phone #: Email address: Envelope #:

Page 7 www.stkevinflushing.org January 10, 2016 Living Mercy in the Jubilee Year of Mercy The Jubilee Year of Mercy began on December 8, 2015, the iftieth anniversary of the closing of the Second Vatican Council. Here are a few important themes for re lection during this important year. Jesus is the face of the Father s mercy Jesus of Nazareth, Pope Francis writes in Misericordiae Vultus, the Bull of Indiction of the Extraordinary Jubilee of Mercy, is the face of the Father s mercy he reveals the mercy of God by his words, actions, and person. We follow Jesus example when we open ourselves to the Father s mercy by looking sincerely into the eyes of our brothers and sisters, including those who are denied their dignity. How have you experienced the Father s mercy in your own life? How might Jesus be calling you to look sincerely into the eyes of those who are denied their dignity? Mercy is the beating heart of the Gospel Pope Francis writes: It is absolutely essential for the Church and for the credibility of her message that she herself live and testify to mercy. Mercy, he says, is the beating heart of the Gospel (Misericordiae Vultus). To live mercy, we must rediscover both the spiritual works of mercy (counsel the doubtful, instruct the ignorant, admonish sinners, comfort the afflicted, forgive offences, bear patiently those who do us ill, and pray for the living and the dead), and the corporal works of mercy (feed the hungry, give drink to the thirsty, clothe the naked, welcome the stranger, heal the sick, visit the imprisoned, and bury the dead). Which spiritual works of mercy might Christ be calling you to practice? Which corporal works of mercy? Mercy demands justice True mercy, the mercy God gives to us and teaches us, demands justice, it demands that the poor find the way to be poor no longer, Pope Francis notes. It asks us, the Church, us, the City of Rome, it asks the institutions to ensure that no one ever again stand in need of a soup- kitchen, of makeshift-lodgings, of a service of legal assistance in order to have his legitimate right recognized to live and to work, to be fully a person (Address to Jesuit Refugee Services, 9/10/13). In your own life, and in your faith community, how do you work for justice? Do you seek to address the root causes of problems that affect those who are vulnerable? Ideas for Living Mercy during the Jubilee Year There are many ways we can respond to the call to live mercy. : Put Two Feet of Love in Action. Use the Two Feet of Love in Ac on guide to consider how you can strengthen both charitable works and social jus ce at home and as part of your faith community.
