Gathering Preparation for Worship John 18:36 Jesus answered, My kingdom is not from this world. If my kingdom were from this world, my followers would be fighting to keep me from being handed over to the Jews. But as it is, my kingdom is not from here. Voluntary Lift Up Your Heads J. Wayne Kerr Call to Worship from Psalm 133 Behold, how good and pleasant it is when brothers and sisters dwell in unity! It is like the precious oil upon the head, running down upon the beard, upon the beard of Aaron, running down on the collar of his robes! It is like the dew of Hermon, which falls on the mountains of Zion! For there the Lord has commanded the blessing, life for evermore. Let us worship God. Introit (11:00) All Creatures of Our God and King Ralph Vaughan Williams Hymn 93 Lift Up Your Heads, Ye Mighty Gates Truro Prayer of Confession (silently, then said together) God, forgive us. Our communion is not always visible to the world. Sometimes we allow threats to unity to enter the church, making it hard to see that we are your community. We act as though we do not need each other. We do not always love one another. We do not know and bear one another s burdens. We fail to build each other up. We do not always give ourselves willingly and joyfully to one another. Forgive us and strengthen us so that we may live in the unity that you grant us. Amen. Assurance of Pardon Friends, believe the good news of the Gospel! In Jesus Christ we are forgiven! The Gloria Patri Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost. As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen. Passing the Peace Greet those around you with, The peace of Christ be with you. Anthem (8:30) Brother James Air arr. Brian Dean Lisa House, soprano Susan Fuchs, piano (11:00) Christ Is Made the Sure Foundation Dale Wood Karyn Myers, guest director Christ is made the sure foundation, Christ the head and Cornerstone; Chosen of the Lord, and precious, binding all the church in one; Holy Zion s help forever, and her confidence alone. To this temple, where we call Thee, come, O Lord of hosts, today; with Thy wonted loving kindness hear Thy servants as they pray, and Thy fullest benediction shed within its walls alway. Laud and honor to the Father, laud and honor to the Son, Laud and honor to the Spirit, ever Three and ever One, One in might, and One in glory, while unending ages run. Scripture Reading John 18:28 40 New Testament page 112 The Sermon I Am a King Rev. McDermott Responding Pastoral Prayer and the Lord s Prayer Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen. Offertory Oh, That I Had a Thousand Voices Paul Manz The Doxology Praise God from whom all blessings flow; praise Him, all creatures here below. Praise Him above ye heavenly host; praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost. Amen. Affirmation of Faith The Nicene Creed We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father. Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven: by the power of the Holy Spirit he became incarnate from the Virgin Mary, and was made man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son. With the Father and the Son he is worshipped and glorified. He has spoken through the Prophets. We believe in one holy catholic, and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen. 3

Sending Hymn 41 O Worship the King, All Glorious Above! Lyons Charge and Benediction the congregation joins hands Postlude Allegretto Alexandre Guilmant c d Comments for Contemplation I Am a King John 1:43 50, 6:15; John 18:28 40 1. It is the Lord who created us, who redeemed us, who sustains us and who provides for us. Giving thanks to God is one way of recognizing how the universe is ordered as well as our station in it. It is therefore a reasonable question to ask ourselves, who or what is the authority in our lives? Whom or what do we? Because, as I ve said, we re gonna serve somebody. 2. And instead of being able to extend the love of Jesus to others in our lives beyond this place, we sometimes cause people to say, I m not interested, by the words we say or actions that we make. It is my prayer that as we re-discover Jesus as both the king of the universe and the king of our lives, that we will grow into being the for Christ that he has called and equipped us to be. 3. The Jewish religious leaders have brought Jesus to the Roman procurator, Pontius Pilate because Pilate has the power to crucify Jesus and put him to death. Part of their claim that Jesus deserves death is that he has allowed himself to be hailed as the king of the Jews, which was considered political because the emperor was the only one who was considered a sovereign king who could establish rulers over the empire. 4. Jesus indirect answer is powerful. He says, My kingdom is not from this world. If my kingdom were from this world, my followers would be fighting to keep me from being handed over to the [Jewish religious leaders]. But as it is, my kingdom is not from here. Pilate asked him, So you are a king? Again Jesus deflects the question. You say that I am a king. For this I was born, and for this I came into the world, to to the truth. Everyone who belongs to the truth listens to my voice. 5. And Jesus insists that everyone who belongs to the truth listens to his voice. Pilate was not inclined to prosecute Jesus and makes a token attempt to let Jesus go. But the crowds have made up their mind, and we know the rest of the story. Did you ever think about how remarkable it is, that twenty centuries later, Christians can still claim as King a man who was crucified like a common, and, quite literally, lived to tell the tale? 4 Printing provided by The Fowler Group Please recycle. 1200 South Collins www.firstprestexas.org Arlington, Texas 76010 817-274-8286

Paul now leads the 3DM National Team in the USA, and is pastor of Grace Gathering in New Haven, IN. Our local Mission Affinity Group (MAG a small group of pastors/churches seeking to join forces for God s mission) on behalf of the Fellowship Community here in the DFW area, is sponsoring this regional conference. (We sponsored a similar event two years ago with Jim Singleton.) The early bird cost (thru 7/20) is $30, and is $40 on 7/21 and later, which includes materials, snacks and lunch on Saturday. You can register online at Eventbrite.com by entering Naturally Supernatural Arlington, TX.
