10 March 2019 First Sunday in Lent VOLUNTARY ANNOUNCEMENTS GATHERING Two Voluntaries in Minor Keys Maurice Greene -The Assembly will please stand- CONFESSION AND FORGIVENESS P. In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. C. Amen. P. In these forty days, let us be honest, confess our sin, and receive God s promise of mercy. God at the margins: C. We have wandered far from your home; again and again, we lose our way. We turn inward, afraid of the world around us. We forget that you have saved your people before and promise to do so again. Do not remember the deeds of our past, but turn our faces toward the future, where your forgiveness is sure, your welcome is clear, and your love overflows. Amen. p. Like a hen who gathers her chicks, God embraces you in tender care. Like manna in the desert, God feeds you with surprising mercy. Like a loving parent, God runs to meet you again this day, forgiving your sins for the sake of Christ, leading you from death into life. C. Amen.

GREETING P. The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with you all. C. And also with you. PRAYER OF THE DAY P. The Lord be with you. C. And also with you. P. Let us pray: O Lord God, you led your people through the wilderness and brought them to the promised land. Guide us now, so that, following your Son, we may walk safely through the wilderness of this world toward the life you alone can give, through Jesus Christ, our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. C. Amen. to the LORD, the God of our ancestors; the LORD heard our voice and saw our affliction, our toil, and our oppression. 8 The LORD brought us out of Egypt with a mighty hand and an outstretched arm, with a terrifying display of power, and with signs and wonders; 9 and he brought us into this place and gave us this land, a land flowing with milk and honey. 10 So now I bring the first of the fruit of the ground that you, O LORD, have given me. You shall set it down before the LORD your God and bow down before the LORD your God. 11 Then you, together with the Levites and the aliens who reside among you, shall celebrate with all the bounty that the LORD your God has given to you and to your house. Lector: Assembly: PSALM HYMN The word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. WORD --The Assembly will please sit- FIRST READING: Deuteronomy 26:1-11 1 When you have come into the land that the LORD your God is giving you as an inheritance to possess, and you possess it, and settle in it, 2 you shall take some of the first of all the fruit of the ground, which you harvest from the land that the LORD your God is giving you, and you shall put it in a basket and go to the place that the LORD your God will choose as a dwelling for his name. 3 You shall go to the priest who is in office at that time, and say to him, Today I declare to the LORD your God that I have come into the land that the LORD swore to our ancestors to give us. 4 When the priest takes the basket from your hand and sets it down before the altar of the LORD your God, 5 you shall make this response before the LORD your God: A wandering Aramean was my ancestor; he went down into Egypt and lived there as an alien, few in number, and there he became a great nation, mighty and populous. 6 When the Egyptians treated us harshly and afflicted us, by imposing hard labor on us, 7 we cried

SECOND READING: Romans 10:8b-13 8b The word is near you, on your lips and in your heart (that is, the word of faith that we proclaim); 9 because if you confess with your lips that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. 10 For one believes with the heart and so is justified, and one confesses with the mouth and so is saved. 11 The scripture says, No one who believes in him will be put to shame. 12 For there is no distinction between Jew and Greek; the same Lord is Lord of all and is generous to all who call on him. 13 For, Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved. Lector: Assembly: The word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. -The Assembly will please stand-

GOSPEL: Luke 4:1-13 The holy gospel according to Luke. Glory to you, O Lord. 1 Jesus, full of the Holy Spirit, returned from the Jordan and was led by the Spirit in the wilderness, 2 where for forty days he was tempted by the devil. He ate nothing at all during those days, and when they were over, he was famished. 3 The devil said to him, If you are the Son of God, command this stone to become a loaf of bread. 4 Jesus answered him, It is written, One does not live by bread alone. 5 Then the devil led him up and showed him in an instant all the kingdoms of the world. 6 And the devil said to him, To you I will give their glory and all this authority; for it has been given over to me, and I give it to anyone I please. 7 If you, then, will worship me, it will all be yours. 8 Jesus answered him, It is written, Worship the Lord your God, and serve only him. 9 Then the devil took him to Jerusalem, and placed him on the pinnacle of the temple, saying to him, If you are the Son of God, throw yourself down from here, 10 for it is written, He will command his angels concerning you, to protect you, 11 and On their hands they will bear you up, so that you will not dash your foot against a stone. 12 Jesus answered him, It is said, Do not put the Lord your God to the test. 13 When the devil had finished every test, he departed from him until an opportune time. The gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, O Christ. SERMON -The Assembly will please sit- -The Assembly will please stand- CREED We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father;

through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven, was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the virgin Mary and became truly human. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is worshiped and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen. and verily ev ry man living is altogether vanity. For man walketh in a vain shadow, and disquieteth himself in vain; he heapeth up riches and cannot tell who shall gather them. And now Lord, what is my hope? Truly my hope is ev n in Thee. Hear my prayer, O Lord, and with Thine ears consider my calling. Hold not Thy peace at my tears. O spare me a little, that I may recover my strength before I go hence and be no more seen. (Text from Psalm 39) -The Assembly will please stand- PRAYERS OF INTERCESSION PEACE OFFERING SENTENCE Petition response: Lord, have mercy. MEAL -The Assembly will please sit- ANTHEM Lord, Let Me Know Mine End Maurice Greene Lord, let me know mine end, and the number of my days; that I may be certified how long I have to live. Behold, Thou hast made my days as it were a span long: and mine age is ev n as nothing in respect of Thee:

OFFERING PRAYER A. Let us pray: C. Generous God, you feed us with the harvest of the land, and you provide for our every need. Receive our gifts of money, imagination, and labor, and transform them into a feast that welcomes all, in Jesus Christ, our host and our guest. Amen. DIALOGUE GREAT THANKSGIVING -The Assembly may kneel, or stand, or sit- THANKSGIVING AT THE TABLE MYSTERY OF FAITH PREFACE CONCLUSION OF THE THANKSGIVING HOLY, HOLY, HOLY

LORD S PRAYER Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever and ever. Amen. INVITATION TO COMMUNION P. These are the gifts of God for the people of God. C. Holy things for a holy people. LAMB OF GOD -The Assembly will please sit- DISTRIBUTION OF COMMUNION Distribution at the head of the aisle. O Lord, throughout These Forty Days 1 O Lord, throughout these forty days you prayed and kept the fast; inspire repentance for our sin, and free us from our past. Please stand at the final verse. 2 You strove with Satan, and you won; your faithfulness endured; lend us your nerve, your skill and trust in God s eternal word. 3 Though parched and hungry, yet you prayed and fixed your mind above; so teach us to deny ourselves that we may know God s love. 4 Be with us through this season, Lord, and all our earthly days, that when the final Easter dawns, we join in heaven s praise. Tune: DUNDEE Text: based on Claudia F. Hernaman, 1838-1898; para. Gilbert E. Doan, b. 1930

PRAYER AFTER COMMUNION A. Let us pray: Tender and merciful one, at your feast, you fed us who brought nothing, turning our emptiness into joy. Filled with your abundant grace, send us now to be ministers of reconciliation, mending broken hearts, working for justice, and striving for peace among all people, in the name of Jesus Christ. C. Amen. BLESSING SENDING P. Almighty God, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, bless you now and forever. C. Amen. Please refer to the following page.

A sign up sheet for volunteers to sponsor one (or more) of the meals is located on the lectern in the main hall. Many have been waiting for the return of our Thursday Nights and we hope you will join us! Lent is a season of self-examination and reflection. Join us on an intentional reflection thru pictures. Starting with Ash Wednesday, consider the word of the day (found on St. Mark s Facebook page) and then share a picture that reflects how you perceive that word. No explanation needed. After all, a picture is worth a thousand words. You can share them on your facebook page and tag us, or post them on our facebook page, in the comment section for each day.
