THE SERVICE FOR THE LORD S DAY The First Presbyterian Church of Howard County Fourth Sunday after Epiphany 180 th Anniversary of This Congregation Communion February 3, 2019 10:30 a.m. GATHER Let all enter the sanctuary in a spirit of prayer. Please remember to turn cell phones and pagers to silent for worship. Where you see an asterisk (*) please stand if you are able. Words in bold are read by the congregation. Please fill out the red Friendship Pad in each pew. For Meditation before Worship (for personal use before worship) We are caught in an inescapable network of mutuality, tied in a single garment of destiny. Whatever affects one directly affects all indirectly. Gathering Music Spiritual for Organ Poor Man Lazarus Greeting from Letter from Birmingham Jail, Martin Luther King, Jr. The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ be with you. And also with you. Callahan Jester Hairston Please fill out the red Friendship Pad in each pew. Newcomers please leave us your address and contact information! Then, pass the folder the length of the pew and back. Lighting the Christ Candle From the very beginning, God calls us. God sets us apart with meaning and purpose. Even if we are brought to the edge of a cliff God is with us and sustains us. Whenever we light this candle, we proclaim: Christ is the light of the world and the center of our lives. Prayer for Sunday Morning May God be with you. And also with you. Holy God, you sent Jesus Christ to fulfill the promise of Scripture. Help us to hear and believe the gift and challenge of the gospel, so that we may accept and follow the Lord Jesus Christ,

* Hymn 401 Here in This Place Gather Us In Call to Confession Prayer of Confession Holy God, Maker of all: Have mercy on us. Jesus Christ, servant of the poor: Have mercy on us. Holy Spirit, Breath of life: Have mercy on us. Holy and merciful God, in your presence we confess our failure to be what you created us to be. You alone know how often we have sinned in wandering from your ways, in wasting your gifts, in forgetting your love. By your loving mercy help us to live in your light and abide in your ways, for the sake of Jesus Christ, our teacher, friend, guide, and savior. (We take time for quiet, personal prayer ) Assurance of Grace * Response of Praise (singing together) Leider Hallelu * Sharing the Peace Hallelu, Hallelu, Hallelu, Hallelu, Hallelu, Hallelujah The peace of Christ be with you. And also with you. We greet each other with signs of peace and reconciliation. A touch on the shoulder, a nod, a bow can be a substitute for handshakes to hinder the spread of the flu. * Response of Praise 379, verses 1 & 3 We Shall Overcome (singing together) Words of Welcome We shall overcome; we shall overcome; we shall overcome someday. O, deep in my heart I do believe we shall overcome someday! We shall live in peace; we shall live in peace; we shall live in peace someday. O, deep in my heart I do believe we shall overcome someday!

ENCOUNTER Prayer for Illumination First Lesson: Jeremiah 1:1-10 Page 609; pew Bible The Word of God for the People of God Thanks be to God! Today s Children s Story Bible Text Children might like to read this lesson: Speak Up, Jeremiah Page 148 (Based on Jeremiah 1:1-10, 31:31-34) Children s Prayer and The Lord s Prayer Afterwards, children ages 4-7 may go with Ms. Kathy Moore to Godly Play. Parents can pick up their children following worship in Rooms 110 & 113. Older children, grades 2-5, who normally attend The Worship Bridge will return to their seats to experience a full worship service with their family. Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name. Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our debts as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory forever. Second Lesson: Luke 4:21-30 Page 835; pew Bible For the Word of God in scripture, For the Word of God among us, For the Word of God within us: Thanks be to God! Sermon 180 Years of Trouble! Sue Lowcock Harris (after the sermon, we observe a time of meditation and prayer) RESPOND AND SERVE * Affirmation of Faith (together) from The Iona Community We believe in God, whose love is the source of all life and the desire of our lives, whose love was given a human face in Jesus of Nazareth, whose love was crucified by the evil that waits to enslave us all, and whose love, defeating even death, is our glorious promise of freedom. Therefore, though we are sometimes fearful and full of doubt, in God we trust; and, in the name of Jesus Christ,

we commit ourselves, in the service of others, to seek justice and to live in peace, to care for the earth and to share the common wealth of God s goodness, to live in the freedom of forgiveness and the power of the spirit of love, and in the company of the faithful so to be the church, for the glory of God. Concerns and Remembrances The Offering Offertory Anthem Sweet Home arr. Wendell Whaum The Sacrament of The Lord s Supper Invitation to the Table * Communion Hymn 525 Let Us Break Bread Together Break Bread The Great Prayer of Thanksgiving God is here. The Spirit is with us. People of God, open your hearts. We open them to God and one another. Let us give thanks to the living God. It is right to give our thanks and praise. Blessed are you, O Lord our God, Name Unnamed, Ruler of the Universe in unity with all who yearn for your will to be done on earth, we praise your name. And this is our song: Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of justice and love, Your compassion enfolds the earth, Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is the One who comes in your holy name. Hosanna in the highest: O God, come to save. [The pastors continue to lead us in prayer. We gather up all our prayers, spoken and unspoken, as we pray together ] God in heaven, your name is to be honored. May your new community of hope be realized on earth as it is in heaven. Give us today the essentials of life. Release us from wrongdoing as we also release those who wrong us. Do not test us beyond our enduring; save us from all that is evil. For you embrace justice, love and peace, now and to the end of time.

Breaking the Bread Communion of the People We will receive communion this morning by passing the bread and the cup to one another in the pew. Gluten-free bread is in the paper cup in the center of the bread tray. The outer circle is white grape juice; the inner circles are red wine. Our tradition is to eat the bread as it comes to you, and then to hold the cup so we may commune together. Music at Communion Prayer After Communion Loving and gracious God, from east and west, from north and south, you have gathered us at your table, and called us your beloved. Transform us to be your body in the world, so that we may serve you and our neighbors with great joy. Song After Communion, 792 Balm in Gilead, verse 1 Balm There is a balm in Gilead that makes the wounded whole; there is a balm in Gilead to heal the sin-sick soul. Sometimes I feel discouraged and think my work s in vain, but then the Holy Spirit revives my soul again. SEND AND BLESS This Week at First Presbyterian Church * Hymn 307 God of Grace and God of Glory Cwm Rhondda * Closing Responses This is the day that God has made; We will rejoice and be glad in it. We will not offer God Offerings that cost us nothing. Go in peace to love and serve We will seek peace and pursue it. In the name of the Trinity of Love, God in community, holy and one. * Benediction * Response 317, verse 3 McKee Join hands, disciples of the faith, whate er your race may be. All children of the living God are surely kin to me. * Postlude
