Newsletter February 2017 Love Is Grande! February has become the love month with a date specifically dedicated for celebrating love. The Bible has a lot to say about love. I went to one of my favorite Bible research websites called www.biblegateway.com and did a love word search. Up popped 687 verses. I did the same for sins. There were only 278. Love wins out! According to the Bible, who is the greatest lover of all time? David? Solomon? The Queen of Sheba? Actually, it is God! God s love is so grand, so deep, so infinite, and so pure that, without a doubt, He is the ultimate lover. And who does He love? The scriptures never mention God loving the angels, even though they are quite magnificent and wonderful. It never says He loves animals, although He must enjoy them a lot because He made so many kinds. It does say that the Lord loves creation because it is where the object of His love lives. Who does He love? It s You and Me! God loves all humanity. We have a special place in His heart and nothing else comes close. Let s review just one verse, (OK, two verses) describing this special love relationship God wants with us. In John 3:16-17, Jesus declared, For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him. God s heart is big enough to love every human being now living, that has ever lived and ever will live. But Jesus made it very personal and exclusive when he added whoever believes in Him. 2

The question is, Are you one of the whoevers? God s love is offered to all, but not received by all. If we don t embrace Jesus as Savior and Lord, then we remain condemned in our trespasses and sins. Then God loved us in vain. But Pastor Jim, doesn t verse 17 say that Jesus did not come to condemn us? That is right. We were already condemned, born into a broken world, burdened by our sinful nature and outside of God s holy realm. John 3:18 (NIV) 18 Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe stands condemned already because they have not believed in the name of God s one and only Son. But God loves us too much to leave us alone, lost in our sins. Because of pure love, He sacrificed His perfect and innocent Son s life as an exchange for our sinfulness. Imagine this Valentine gift exchange at the foot of the cross: Jesus offers us a heart-shaped box full of love, joy, and heaven. In exchange, we give Him a box full of hate, sorrow, and hell. The amazing thing is, Jesus wants our box. Do we want His? A beautiful image in scripture portrays the Church (meaning all who trust in Jesus) as the Bride of Jesus. Just as a healthy marriage is the best earthly example of two people joyfully giving their lives away in sacrificial love for each other, so we are invited to know love, true love, as it is demonstrated and given by Jesus to us. And we are invited to enter into the joy of loving Him back. When we see heart decorations in store windows this month, let s remember we are God s sweethearts. He invites us to receive His gift of love. Isn t that Grande? 3

Kids EVENTS Sunday School 8:30am 9:30 am Sunday Mornings Ages 3 years and up are welcome to attend. &&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&& Report on Mosquito Net Distribution in Chad, 2016 From Funds Donated by Lund Lutheran Church, Detroit Lakes, MN Dear friends at Lund, In September of 2015, you sent a check in the amount of $573.53 to Lutheran Brethren International Mission (LBIM), designated for mosquito net purchase and distribution in Chad. I am pleased to share with you through this letter and these pictures the impact that your contribution has had and will continue to have among impoverished communities in this malaria stricken part of the world. Malaria is one of the top three leading causes of death in Chad, particularly among children (see worldlifeexpectancy.org). Some statistics claim that as much of a quarter of all mortality under the age of five is attributed to malaria (BBC Health News). Chad is currently ranked # 2 in the world for the highest malaria-related deaths in a nation. This is sobering news, but the good news is that you can and are making a difference! When insecticide-treated nets are used properly by three-quarters of the people in a community, malaria transmission is cut by 50%, child deaths are cut by 20%, and the mosquito population drops by as much as 90% (see netsforlifeafrica.org). 6

Your donation went towards the purchase and distribution of these mosquito nets in Chad. As I travel to Chad multiple times a year, I have had the privilege of overseeing this project, and we have distributed literally thousands of nets in impoverished communities in Chad where malaria outbreaks are high. Your particular donation served to purchase and distribute 96 nets into the hands of very grateful children, men and women. Thank you so much for this gift. Know that you are literally saving lives in Chad through these nets. And pray that these children, who will live, thanks to these nets, will also grow to experience God s love and receive his free gift of salvation to them, so that they may know eternal life as well! Dan Venberg LBIM 7

Women s Bible Study Tuesday, February 14th2:00pm Hostess: Jan Anderson All women are welcome to attend! ************************************************** Hello there, Mousey here. January is coming to an end soon, and isn t the saying, when January is over, it s all downhill from now. Or something like that. November, December and now January has zipped by. Been kind of lonely, as I have had no guests, and this winter has canceled a couple of services. I miss all the people, big and little at church too. 2017 will be a busy year. We will be looking for a new pastor, as sadly, Pastor Jim will be retiring. Seems like the older I get, the faster the time goes and it won t be long and summer will be here. Lund is in need of being on your daily prayers list, to be asking God to guide us as we go forth with all of our endeavors. We have had babies in our church on Sunday s and it makes me smile to hear them. Love those babies. Be sure and thank all the people that keep our church going, Pam for all the things she does in the office, John for keeping our church shiny and clean, Jennifer for making beautiful music, Cindy for being in charge of the Sunday School, Karen, Cindy, Robin and Pastor Jim for having the confirmation class on Wednesday s. All of the volunteers that do the many other things, Sunday Morning Coffee, funerals, Meatball Dinner, Taste of Lund and all that keep Lund going strong. We ask God to bless everyone that makes Lund a wonderful church in the country. Till next month, Mousey. 8
