Any immediate needs will always take priority, but in general, we will follow this schedule. Please note that this means on the 2 nd and 4 th Sundays of the month, Pastor will speak the names of everyone on our health concerns list, but on other Sundays, this will be lifted up only as a general prayer for health and healing. 4 th Sunday of the Month Local Churches Lutheran Church Missouri Synod Circuit (area) churches: Beautiful Savior-Antioch, Faith-Lake Forest, Lord of Glory-Grayslake, Redeemer-Waukegan, Prince of Peace-Waukegan GO! 500 TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE REFORMATION This service is compiled from Scripture and the Book of Concord in celebration of the 500 th Anniversary of the Reformation October 31, 1517. Concordia comes from two Latin words meaning with and heart. It describes a commitment to the truth so strong and so deep, it is as if those who share it have a single heart beat. The Book of Concord contains documents which Christians from the fourth to the 16th century A.D. explained what they believed and taught on the basis of the Holy Scriptures. It includes, first, the three creeds which originated in the ancient church, the Apostles Creed, the Nicene Creed, and the Athanasian Creed. It contains, secondly, the Reformation writings known as the Augsburg Confession, the Apology of the Augsburg Confession, the Smalcald Articles, the Treatise on the Power and Primacy of the Pope, Luther s Small and Large Catechisms, and the Formula of Concord. 1 Preface P: In these Last Times and in this old age of the world, what a remarkable favor of Almighty God has arisen, C: According to His unspeakable love, patience, and mercy, P: He willed that the light of His Gospel and Word through which alone we receive true salvation C: This Gospel should arise and shine clearly and purely. P: Therefore, a brief and concise Confession of faith C: a declaration of what we believe P: was prepared from God s Word C: the most holy writings of the prophets and apostles. 2 P: The first and chief article of faith is this: C: Jesus Christ, our God and Lord, was put to death for our trespasses and raised again for our justification. He alone is the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world. Alleluia. Amen. P: On this article of faith rests all that we teach and practice. 3 1 Introduction/Overview, Concordia: The Lutheran Confessions A Reader s Edition, pp. 9,13. 2 Preface to the Christian Book of Concord, 2. 3 Smalcald Articles, Part II, I, 1-2,5. 4

Opening Hymn By Grace I m Saved LSB 566 5 By grace to timid hearts that tremble, In tribulation s furnace tried, By grace, in spite of fear and trouble, The Father s heart is open wide. Where could I help and strength secure If grace were not my anchor sure? 6 By grace! On this I ll rest when dying; In Jesus promise I rejoice; For though I know my heart s condition, I also know my Savior s voice. My heart is glad, all grief has flown Since I am saved by grace alone. 5

Invocation and Declaration of the Trinity P: In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. C: Amen. P: Our churches teach in accordance with the historic Creeds: C: That there is one God P: One undivided divine essence, C: And that this one God is Trinity Father, Son, and Holy Spirit P: Three distinct and coeternal persons of the same divine essence. C: And we believe that the Holy Scriptures truly testify to this. Amen. 4 Confession (Admission) of Sin P: We believe, teach, and confess that the distinction between law and Gospel is to be kept in the Church with great diligence as a particularly brilliant light, so that the Word of God may be divided rightly. The law is a divine doctrine which teaches what is right and God-pleasing C: and which condemns everything that is sinful and contrary to God s will. 5 P: Since the fall of Adam all people are conceived and born in sin. C: No one by nature is able to have true fear of God and true faith in God. P: This inborn sickness and hereditary sin condemns and brings the eternal wrath of God on all those who are not born again through Baptism and the Holy Spirit. 6 C: This is the essence of a genuinely Christian life, to acknowledge that we are sinners and to pray for grace. Amen. 7 P: The crowd at Pentecost confronted with their sin they asked the Apostles, Brothers, what shall we do? Having heard the condemnation of our sin in the Law of God, we find ourselves asking the same question. For this, we turn to the Gospel which teaches what we are to believe: C: Christ has satisfied and paid for all guilt, without any merit of our own, and has won the forgiveness of sins and eternal life for us. 4 Apology of the Augsburg Confession, Part I, 1-2. 5 Formula of Concord, Epitome, V, 1-2. 6 Augsburg Confession, II, 1-2. 7 Large Catechism, Part V, Exhortation, 9. 6

P: This Gospel is a comforting and joyful message which comforts our consciences terrified by the law, points us only to the merit of Christ, and raises us up again by the delightful proclamation of God s grace and favor. 8 According to this Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ, and in His stead, I forgive you your sins in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. C: Amen. Response of Thanksgiving for the Absolution LSB 805 Greeting and Collect (Prayer of the Day) P: The Lord be with you. C: And also with you. P: Let us pray. God and Father of my Lord Jesus Christ, give to us the spirit of wisdom and understanding, of patience and compassion, that our congregation may rightly teach and share Your words of judgment and mercy. May we fulfill this mission so that by the power of Your Gospel we and others may repent of sin, trust in Your pardon, and be reconciled to live in the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace; through Jesus Christ, our Lord. C: Amen. 8 Formula of Concord, Epitome, V, 4,6. 7

Our Confession of Faith Regarding the Scriptures P: We believe, teach, and confess that the only measure to which all doctrines and teachers are to be evaluated and judged are: C: the prophetic and apostolic writings of the Old and New Testaments, P: As it is written in Psalm 119, C: Thy word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path. P: We believe, teach, and confess that this faith is not a mere knowledge of the stories about Christ, C: but it is God s gift. P: By this gift we rightly recognize Christ as C: our Redeemer in the Word of the Gospel. P: We trust that only by His obedience, and by grace, C: we have forgiveness of sins, P: are regarded as holy and righteous by God the Father, C: and shall be saved eternally. 9 P: Hear now the Word of the Lord. Psalm Reading 1 The fool says in his heart, There is no God. They are corrupt, they do abominable deeds, there is none who does good. 2 The LORD looks down from heaven on the children of man, to see if there are any who understand, who seek after God. 3 They have all turned aside; together they have become corrupt; there is none who does good, not even one. 4 Have they no knowledge, all the evildoers who eat up my people as they eat bread and do not call upon the LORD? 5 There they are in great terror, for God is with the generation of the righteous. 6 You would shame the plans of the poor, but the LORD is his refuge. 7 Oh, that salvation for Israel would come out of Zion! When the LORD restores the fortunes of his people, let Jacob rejoice, let Israel be glad. L: O Lord, have mercy on us. C: Thanks be to God. Psalm 14 (ESV) 9 Formula of Concord, Epitome, 0, 1; III, 6. 8

Old Testament Reading Isaiah 29:11 19 (ESV) 11 And the vision of all this has become to you like the words of a book that is sealed. When men give it to one who can read, saying, Read this, he says, I cannot, for it is sealed. 12 And when they give the book to one who cannot read, saying, Read this, he says, I cannot read. 13 And the Lord said: Because this people draw near with their mouth and honor me with their lips, while their hearts are far from me, and their fear of me is a commandment taught by men, 14 therefore, behold, I will again do wonderful things with this people, with wonder upon wonder; and the wisdom of their wise men shall perish, and the discernment of their discerning men shall be hidden. 15 Ah, you who hide deep from the LORD your counsel, whose deeds are in the dark, and who say, Who sees us? Who knows us? 16 You turn things upside down! Shall the potter be regarded as the clay, that the thing made should say of its maker, He did not make me ; or the thing formed say of him who formed it, He has no understanding? 17 Is it not yet a very little while until Lebanon shall be turned into a fruitful field, and the fruitful field shall be regarded as a forest? 18 In that day the deaf shall hear the words of a book, and out of their gloom and darkness the eyes of the blind shall see. 19 The meek shall obtain fresh joy in the LORD, and the poor among mankind shall exult in the Holy One of Israel. L: O Lord, have mercy on us. C: Thanks be to God. 9

Confession of Faith Apostles Creed I believe in God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth. And in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried. He descended into hell. The third day He rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty. From thence He will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen. Hymn of the Day The Gospel Shows the Father s Grace LSB 580 5 It bears to all the tidings glad And bids their hearts no more be sad; The weary, burdened souls it cheers And banishes their guilty fears. 6 May we in faith its message learn Nor thanklessly its blessings spurn; May we in faith its truth confess And praise the Lord, our righteousness. 11

Sermon Offering & Prayer Requests In addition to the prayer requests already received, Pastor will pause here to see if there are additional requests. Prayers can be thanksgivings, joy, requests for yourself, or requests for others. Offertory Holy, Holy Holy (**Today s Favorite Hymn selection**) LSB 507 sts. 1, 4 (we join in singing as the offerings are brought forward to the altar) 12

Prayers The Lord s Prayer P: Lord, remember us in Your kingdom, and teach us to pray: All: Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name, Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever and ever. Amen. Benedicamus Domino ( Let us bless, the Lord ) & Benediction (Blessing) P: Let us bless the Lord. C: Thanks be to God. P: It is also taught among us that faith in Jesus Christ should produce good fruits and good works and that we must do all such good works as God has commanded, C: but we should do them for God s sake and honor, to the praise of His Holy Name. 10 P: The Lord grant you His Fatherly mercy through Jesus Christ giving you forgiveness of sin and all things pertaining to life and godliness, sending you His Holy Spirit so that He may rule your hearts and you may serve Him in holiness and thanksgiving. C: Amen. 10 Apology of the Augsburg Confession, Part I, VI 1. 13

WORSHIP AT BETHEL Worship at Bethel is a combination of a traditional Lutheran liturgical order with organ-led hymns, but also incorporates one or more praise songs each service, interactive preaching, and an atmosphere that invites people of all ages and all backgrounds to participate and worship the Lord. Bethel rotates through a series of liturgies (orders of service). Some are taken directly or adapted from Lutheran Service Book (LSB), the hymnal of the Lutheran Church Missouri Synod. Other liturgies have been developed for use at Bethel. Generally, we use a liturgy for 2 weeks in a row, so that the second week has some familiarity. We also try to limit the number of different liturgies in rotation. This means that we are able to become familiar with a variety of liturgies, but that there s still a returning to words we ve already heard and said. This helps worship to become more and more our heart language as we hear from God and repeat back to Him the words He gives to us. Sunday School Rally day is almost here! September 9th, we will kick off our Sunday School year with: 9:00 a.m. - Fellowship 9:40 a.m. - Students, preschool through High School, will be given instructions for their activities. There will be Bible Study in the fellowship hall for adults. 10:20 a.m. - Students will meet back in the fellowship hall to finish up their Rally Day activities Registration is now open at Bethel s website (www.bethelgurnee.org) on the homepage. Please help us keep our student lists current. The Board of Christian Education will be emailing parents several times throughout the year. We cannot get the information to you, unless you register your children! Be sure to register your child using their current grade. Preschoolers must be 3 years old by 9/1/18 and be potty trained. Children under the age of 3 or not potty trained, will be in our Little Lambs class. We are excited to announce A Safe Place as our mission for the entire Sunday School year. A Safe Place is the sole provider of services exclusively addressing domestic violence in Lake County. Through multi-faceted programs they assist victims in transforming their lives after domestic violence, prevent future abuse by addressing its root cause through abuser intervention programs, and educate the community about domestic violence and how we can all be involved in its end. It is their goal that by learning more about domestic violence, its causes, and appropriate responses, we can encourage a whole-community response to the domestic violence in our midst, breaking the cycle of domestic violence, thus creating safe and healthy communities. All our offerings collected from Sunday School and Adult Bible study will go to A Safe Place. We look forward to learning and growing with the youth in Bethel as we begin a new school year. If you have any questions, please contact: Diane Sanders (dsanders7@hotmail.com) or Kylie Brazda (kylie.brazda@gmail.com). 16
