THE LORD S DAY February 3, 2008 * PREPARATION FOR WORSHIP Hymn O Love That Will Not Let Me Go Words by George Matheson; Music by Christopher Miner * CALL TO WORSHIP Psalm 27:1-6 The Lord Is My Light and My Salvation Of David. 1 The Lord is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? The Lord is the stronghold of my life; of whom shall I be afraid? 2 When evildoers assail me to eat up my flesh, my adversaries and foes, it is they who stumble and fall. 3 Though an army encamp against me, my heart shall not fear; though war arise against me, yet I will be confident. 4 One thing have I asked of the Lord, that will I seek after: that I may dwell in the house of the Lord all the days of my life, to gaze upon the beauty of the Lord and to inquire in his temple. 5 For He will hide me in his shelter in the day of trouble; He will conceal me under the cover of his tent; He will lift me high upon a rock. 6 And now my head shall be lifted up above my enemies all around me, and I will offer in his tent sacrifices with shouts of joy; I will sing and make melody to the Lord. - Page 1 - - Page 2 -

* INVOCATION CONFESSION OF FAITH The liberty which Christ hath purchased for believers under the Gospel, consists in their freedom from the guilt of sin, the condemning wrath of God, the curse of the moral law; and, in their being delivered from this present evil world, bondage to Satan and dominion of sin; from the evil of afflictions, the sting of death, the victory of the grave, and everlasting damnation; as also, in their free access to God, and their yielding obedience unto Him, not out of slavish fear, but a child-like love and willing mind. Westminster Confession of Faith, 20.1 CONFESSION OF SIN Our Lord Christ, We have sinned against you, and rebelled against you. As prophet, you have revealed to us your will for our salvation. Yet we question if you are true, trust in other voices, run to other prophets, find other stories more seductive, and wish for only affirmation and never correction. We have sinned against you. As priest, you have offered yourself for the Father s justice and have reconciled sinners to the Almighty. Yet we question if by faith we are truly forgiven, wallow in guilt, swim in pride, wash our hands in other rivers, and deny that we were sinful at birth, from the time our mothers conceived us. We have sinned against you. As king, you rule, and reign, and defend. Yet we question if you are ruling well, desire more power for ourselves, spurn any authority over our own, crave different defenders, and believe that we would be better rulers. We have sinned against you. Yet we plead, our Christ, that you would intercede and forgive even now, on the basis of your obedience to death, even death on a cross. May we bow our knees, and our tongues confess, that you are Lord, to the glory of God the Father. Amen. ASSURANCE OF PARDON IN CHRIST OFFERING - Page 5 - - Page 6 -

OLD TESTAMENT READING Judges 14 Samson's Marriage 1 Samson went down to Timnah, and at Timnah he saw one of the daughters of the Philistines. 2 Then he came up and told his father and mother, I saw one of the daughters of the Philistines at Timnah. Now get her for me as my wife. 3 But his father and mother said to him, Is there not a woman among the daughters of your relatives, or among all our people, that you must go to take a wife from the uncircumcised Philistines? But Samson said to his father, Get her for me, for she is right in my eyes. 4 His father and mother did not know that it was from the Lord, for he was seeking an opportunity against the Philistines. At that time the Philistines ruled over Israel. 5 Then Samson went down with his father and mother to Timnah, and they came to the vineyards of Timnah. And behold, a young lion came toward him roaring. 6 Then the Spirit of the Lord rushed upon him, and although he had nothing in his hand, he tore the lion in pieces as one tears a young goat. But he did not tell his father or his mother what he had done. 7 Then he went down and talked with the woman, and she was right in Samson's eyes. 8 After some days he returned to take her. And he turned aside to see the carcass of the lion, and behold, there was a swarm of bees in the body of the lion, and honey. 9 He scraped it out into his hands and went on, eating as he went. And he came to his father and mother and gave some to them, and they ate. But he did not tell them that he had scraped the honey from the carcass of the lion. 10 His father went down to the woman, and Samson prepared a feast there, for so the young men used to do. 11 As soon as the people saw him, they brought thirty companions to be with him. 12 And Samson said to them, Let me now put a riddle to you. If you can tell me what it is, within the seven days of the feast, and find it out, then I will give you thirty linen garments and thirty changes of clothes, 13 but if you cannot tell me what it is, then you shall give me thirty linen garments and thirty changes of clothes. And they said to him, Put your riddle, that we may hear it. 14 And he said to them, Out of the eater came something to eat. Out of the strong came something sweet. And in three days they could not solve the riddle. 15 On the fourth day they said to Samson's wife, Entice your husband to tell us what the riddle is, lest we burn you and your father's house with fire. Have you invited us here to impoverish us? 16 And Samson's wife wept over him and said, You only hate me; you do not love me. You have put a riddle to my people, and you have not told me what it is. And he said to her, Behold, I have not told my father nor my mother, and shall I tell you? 17 She wept before him the seven days that their feast lasted, and on the seventh day he told her, because she pressed him hard. Then she told the riddle to her people. 18 And the men of the city said to him on the seventh day before the sun went down, What is sweeter than honey? What is stronger than a lion? And he said to them, If you had not plowed with my heifer, you would not have found out my riddle. 19 And the Spirit of the Lord rushed upon him, and he went down to Ashkelon and struck down thirty men of the town and took their spoil and gave the garments to those who had told the riddle. In hot anger he went back to his father's house. 20 And Samson's wife was given to his companion, who had been his best man. SACRAMENT OF THE LORD S SUPPER We hold the elements while they are being passed, so we can partake together. *DOXOLOGY Old Hundredth - Hymn 731 Praise God from whom all blessings flow, Praise him, all creatures here below: Praise him above, ye heav nly host, Praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost - Amen. * BENEDICTION * Congregation Standing All music copied by permission of CCLI #2510011 Follow-up Questions to the Sermon 1. The Usual Suspects was one of Jim's four favorite movies from 1995. What were his other three? 2. Some scholars would deny the supernatural element of this story and exorcism, saying that demons were used as a way of explaining little understood medical and physical maladies (in this case, muteness). How would you respond? 3. In verse 16 of Luke 11, what type of sign are the people seeking? 4. Do a study in Scripture for the devil, under his different names. What can you piece together about him? 5. Look up verse 18 in a study Bible or commentary. What are the major interpretive options for understanding this verse? Which one (if any) do you agree with? Prayers of Meditation For Those Not Communing Prayer for Those Searching for Truth Lord Jesus, You claim to be the way, the truth, and the life. Grant that I might be undaunted by the cost of following You as I consider the reasons for doing so. If what You claim is true, please guide me, teach me, and show me the reality of who You are. Amen. Prayer of Belief Heavenly Father, I admit that I am more sinful than I ever before believed, but, through Your Son Jesus, I can be more loved and accepted than I ever dared hope. I thank You that He lived the life I should have lived, and paid the debt and punishment I deserved. Receive me now for His sake. I turn from my sins and receive Jesus to be my Lord and Savior. Amen. Prayer for Those Struggling with Sin Lord Jesus, help me to look to You as the fulfillment of all my needs, and to turn from every false satisfaction to feed on You, the true and living bread. Enable me to lay aside the sin that clings so closely, and run with perseverance the race set before me, looking to You, the pioneer and perfecter of my faith. Amen. Prayer of Commitment Lord Jesus, You have called us to follow You in a life of committed discipleship in Your church. Grant that I may take the necessary steps to be one with Your people, and live in the fullness of Your Spirit. Amen.
