HighlandBaptistChurch.com Celebrating 47 YEARS I want to take a moment to welcome Matt, Joanna, Titus and Lucas Koehler, our new Minister of Education and Youth and his family to our church. Please keep them in your prayers as they continue to settle in and we look forward to what God is going to do in and through his ministry here at Highland. November begins the holiday season which gives us several opportunities to impact our community for Christ by inviting people to church, inviting them over to eat, or even to have a free meal with us on Wednesday nights. AWANA for our children is now in full swing, the choir is working hard on their Christmas cantata, and we are making plans for mission trips next year. Operation Christmas Child will be kicking off soon as we serve as a collection center for shoeboxes filled with gifts to send the gospel to children around the world. We have made a reservation for 6 volunteers to serve at the Atlanta processing center on December 11from 10am 2pm and there will be a sign-up sheet on the board in the foyer. In addition to that, every service is an opportunity for you to invite your friends, neighbors and family to join us. Please make sure that you are sharing events that are posted on our church Facebook page and if you need us to share an event, that you posted on your Facebook page and that your group is doing through the church then tag your post with @HBCTullahoma so that we will see it share it on the church page. Also invite your friends to like the church Facebook page so we can get events out in front of more people. To invite your friends to like the church s Facebook on a computer go to the church s Facebook page, then click on the Community link then you will see your friends listed with an invite button beside their names, click invite and that s all there is to it. (It s a little different on a mobile device but you still follow the same links!) Make the most of every moment we have for Christ! I want to continue sharing with you, as I have shared over the last several months, about the 5 Objectives that give us those tangible ways to measure if we are fulfilling our Vision and the Mission. The Objectives are goals that we are seeking to fulfill over the next 5 years, ending in 2022! This month I want to focus on giving more detail about the fourth objective that relates to using our spiritual gifts. The Objectives are: 1) To see at least 17 individuals annually saved, baptized and set on the road to discipleship by 2022 2) To see our Sunday morning attendance reach 300 by 2022 3) To see our annual giving increase to at least $400,000 by 2022 4) To see at least 100 members discover and use their spiritual gifts to serve in the church by 2022 Everyone loves to receive gifts. Big boxes. Brightly colored paper. Fancy bows. Whether it s Christmas, your birthday, or some other occasion, there s something awesome about opening a gift that has been picked out just for you. God has a gift for you, one more precious than anything you have ever been given. He has given you a spiritual gift (1 Cor. 12:7-11). Spiritual gifts are more than just talents, like singing or being a good athlete. There is a distinction between God-given talents and spiritual gifts. They all derive from the same source, but there are distinct differences. The list of talents is endless. God gives talents to all people believers and nonbelievers alike. You don t have to be a Christian to be talented. Spiritual gifts, however, are uniquely given only to those who have put their faith in Jesus.

Spiritual gifts are special abilities God gives each of His children to enable them to serve Him and His church. If you re a Christian, your gift is already inside you, whether you realize it or not. There s not an exhaustive list of spiritual gifts in one particular passage; instead, they are mentioned in various places in Scripture (Rom. 12:6-8; 1 Cor. 12:8-10,28-30; Eph. 4:11; and 1 Pet. 4:9-11) and they often accompany specific roles in the church. Spiritual gifts are from God and should be used for God. One simple question we should ask ourselves concerning gifts is, Does this exalt Jesus? If attention is drawn to yourself (or to anyone else or anything else) and is drawn away from Jesus, then it s not honoring to the Holy Spirit. God has given you and me specific spiritual gifts for a specific role He has in mind. If we refuse to maximize our gift, then we and others are missing out on the greatest blessing that He wants to produce in and through us. Gardeners know that ignorance isn t always bliss. When planting, gardeners need to know the quality of their soil, the types of seeds they re planting, how much sun their plants can tolerate and how often they need to be watered. If not, they won t have much of a garden or sower bed to enjoy. Our ignorance or lack of awareness can have a significant impact on more than our gardens. Spiritual ignorance can impact everything about our lives and the lives of many others. In 1 Corinthians 12, Paul emphasized that he didn t want the believers in Corinth to be ignorant when it came to spiritual gifts (v. 1). He wanted them to know. He felt it was essential for them to understand God s purpose behind planting spiritual gifts in each of them. What is your spiritual gift? How are your using it to benefit God and others? To help you identify your gift(s) we have linked a Spiritual Gifts Inventory resource to our church website to help you identify and define each gift God has given you. Please take time to take this survey and begin to use your gifts for God and his church. When seeds are planted and grow, they produce fruit that leads to multiplication. God has planted a spiritual gift in you. He wants you to use it so you will have a fruitful walk with Him and so you can help make more disciples. If He intentionally selected a specific gift for you and invited you to join Him in His work, why would you not use it? Decide to pause each day this month to thank God for the spiritual gift(s) He has given you. Name them specifically and ask Him to open your eyes so you can understand how to use them most effectively for Him. 5) To see at least 100 individuals trained and sharing the gospel locally and around the world by 2022 Let s press forward together!
