(Prerequisite may be taken concurrently: MIN 501) Course Objectives At the end of this course, the student should demonstrate the ability to: 1. plan, organize, prepare, write, and deliver sermons from the Bible based on sound methods, 2. contextualize (from interpretation to application) Biblical passages, 3. communicate effectively the Word of God to a contemporary audience, 4. demonstrate measurable improvement and the ability to improve in the future regarding all of the above. Course Requirements and Assignments Students should attend every class meeting, study every assigned text before the class meeting for which it is scheduled, participate actively in work done in class, and prepare and/or deliver assigned outlines/sermons/lectures as required. The student s grade is based on FIVE factors, each of which is worth one-fifth of the final grade: 1. Class Participation. Repeated exposure to the process of sermon development and the input of the professor and other students in the class is vital to the purpose of the course. Perfect attendance constitutes a perfect score for attendance and is based off the professor provided sign-in sheets. 2. Text Preparation. Students who preach are expected to do significant sermon preparation work on passages before the class period for which preaching is scheduled. The student must turn in an expository sermon outline for each text preached (2) in order to be eligible for an A. Page 1 of 9
3. Sermon Critiques. The students will either present or preach (depending on the number of students) exegetical/expository sermons or lectures as required throughout the semester. The frequency of this requirement for each student will be determined by class size and progress. Each student in class not preaching is responsible for critiquing others who preach. For every sermon delivered, each student in class must complete a sermon critique form. Those students who turn in a sermon critique form for every sermon preached in class besides their own will be eligible for an A. 4. Reading Reports. Students will be required to complete a two-page summary/reaction to the assigned readings. These two-page summary/reaction papers should cover the general content of the readings as well as noting any significant strengths or weaknesses of the readings in relation to preaching. The student must turn in a summary/reaction paper for each set of assigned readings to be eligible for an A. 5. Final Paper. Students are required to write a no less than 5 page and no more than 7 page paper comparing and contrasting the principles discussed in Smith with the principles discussed in the assigned readings from Akin and Campbell. Specific attention should be devoted to the mechanics of preaching in keeping with a class on Sermon Delivery. Class Attendance Students are responsible for enrolling in courses for which they anticipate being able to attend every class session on the day and time appearing on course schedules, and then making every effort to do so. When unavoidable situations result in absence or tardiness, students are responsible for acquiring any information missed. s are not obliged to allow students to make up missed work. Per their independent discretion, individual professors may determine how attendance affects students ability to meet course learning objectives and whether attendance affects course grades. Incomplete Grades Students requesting a grade of Incomplete (I) must understand that incomplete grades may be given only upon approval of the faculty member involved. An I may be assigned only when a student is currently passing a course and in situations involving extended illness, serious injury, death in the family, or employment or government reassignment, not student neglect. Students are responsible for contacting their professors prior to the end of the semester, plus filing the appropriate completed and approved academic request form with the Registrar s Office. The I must be removed (by completing the remaining course requirements) no later than 60 calendar days after the grade was assigned, or the I will become an F. Academic honesty includes the basic premise that all work submitted by students must be their own and any ideas derived or copied from elsewhere must be carefully documented. Academic dishonesty includes, but is not limited to: cheating of any kind, submitting, without proper approval, work originally prepared by the student for another course, plagiarism, which is the submitting of work prepared by someone else as if it were his own, and failing to credit sources properly in written work.
