Xmas is an old word that has been in use for centuries as the X is the Greek letter chi which is the first letter of Christ s name in Greek (CristoV = Christos). Happy Xmas! All these events came together on 11 th November 2018 as we commemorated 100 years since the signing of the Armistice the agreement to stop fighting and agree peace terms. Many of us remembered members of our own families involved in that war and I wonder what they would think, if they were still alive with us today, of how war and conflict continue to affect the lives of people across the world. For Christians and many people across the world, Christmas is a reminder of hope and peace, even for those with little or no faith in Jesus. It is a chance to reconnect with family and friends and remember the precious things in our lives that bring harmony and peace. A chance to remember how important love is. John s Gospel reminds us that Greater love has no one than this, to lay down one s life for one s friends (15:13). Just as our family members in the past may have given their lives for the freedom of their country and world, so Jesus was born for the purpose of giving his life that we may have freedom from sin and know the overwhelming love of our Father in heaven.
