President Mike told us that Fifth Avenue United Church had raised $1000 to go toward the landmine problem in various countries. During our 3 December meeting we will be able to make donations. Minutes Matters Adolf Seiler: The Christmas kettles are all arranged for but Adolf had awards for those who were unable to help. Uwe Krickhahn urged us to buy more Club 400 tickets. David Jones: Election of officers will be held on 10 December. Terry Partis: This is Foundation Month and Terry read a story about When the Foundation Met Dr. Seuss Thus, we need Rotarians to donate at least give $100. See Terry s fingers? This means YOU. Terry Brekko: Our Rotary Music Festival will run from 3 March to 16 March this year. Terry needs NEW members to work on this very important Advertising Committee. We need new advertisers, too! The advertising packages will be out in January so Terry needs Team Captains! Is it the truth? Is it fair to all concerned? Will it build goodwill and better friendships? Will it be beneficial to all concerned? 2

HAPPY $ Sgt.-at-Arms Paul collected a raft of happy $s today. Adolf Seiler was happy to hold the $2.3 million cheque given to The Medalta Clay District. John Moldon reminded us that the Rotary Clubs in Medicine Hat had donated $100, 000 to the Historic Clay District to get things going. Al Gray and Marg Mazerolle and Uwe Krickhahn were happy to have attended a Rotary Dinner at Dick and Linda Bide s. Elvira Smid was happy that her son is recovering from a serious work place accident. Doug Fleming, Karen Blewett and Dave Panabaker were happy to have attended a Rotary Dinner at Ernie and Shelly Benesch s home. Adolf Seiler was happy to introduce Rotarian Dave Lowin from the Rotary Club of West Ashfield, Nottingham, England. Phil Renshaw is a member of this club as well and it may be remembered that Phil Renshaw was here two years ago on the Rotary Friendship Exchange form District 1220. Adolf told us that Dave Lowin and his partner Janet are here due to the sudden death of Janet s son, Sean Green. Is it the truth? Is it fair to all concerned? Will it build goodwill and better friendships? Will it be beneficial to all concerned? 4

Adopt A Minefield Bob Arthur introduced our speaker today. Geoff Coley has been working at DRDC Suffield for over eight years and for most of that time he has been working on the humanitarian issue of antipersonnel landmines. Geoff is one of Canada s national representatives on an eight-nation collaboration that focuses on humanitarian demining. Geoff is the Scientific Authority on a project to improve Canadian soldier s protection against mines and IEDs. Geoff Coley presented a fascinating resume of mines and minefields. He told us that with most weapons of war, someone pulls a trigger but with landmines, the victim himself pulls the trigger. Geoff showed a number of very memorable slides of minefields such as the one on the right. It is a school in rural Cambodia right beside a minefield! In the slide on the left Geoff told us that this termite hill around the tree is home to mines in Thailand. One of the more memorable slides shows a narrow-mine free road and mines to the left and right. A woman and her young daughter are shown with food they have collected among the mines. Geoff said that is the reason for his being here. Geoff talked about the means of mine detection and removal. But the question is What can we do? Well, Geoff s answer is this. The Canadian Landmine Foundation s Adopt A Minefield program allows individuals and groups to sponsor the clearance of specific high need areas, such as the school above. Night of a Thousand Dinners is one way. A couple of months ago Fifth Avenue United Church held a fun filled dinner and raised $1000. President Mike thanked the speaker and told us that we will hear more about Adopt A Minefield. Is it the truth? Is it fair to all concerned? Will it build goodwill and better friendships? Will it be beneficial to all concerned? 5
